Beautiful park and very nice campground. Stayed at Camp Burson, which is more accessible for bigger RVs. Nearby hiking trails include one around the lake and another (across rt.16) that climbs a ridge. Camp Burson is just downstream from the dam. Sites are level and most are quite spacious. There are about 10 pull-through sites. Campground staff and hosts are very welcoming and helpful.

Creekside campground is up in the main part of the park, but is definitely not big-rig friendly. The road to it is narrow and contains a hair-raising hairpin curve. The biggest downside to the park is not the park's fault. It is a problem with Virginia state parks. They charge a transaction fee on top of the normal nightly fee, even for walk-ins. They charge non-residents an extra $4.00/night. And they have something called "site-specific" sites, which cost an extra $3.00 per night if you pick one (the non-site-specific sites are first-come, first-serve). That adds up to $40 or more for one night of E/W hookup (you can add another $4 for sewer). We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The park offers a variety of organized activities on weekends, including nature walks, informational talks, canoe/kayak tours, etc. The trails are for walking and/or biking and are kept in really good shape. The lakeside trail from Camp Burson to the swimming beach in the main park is a little over a mile long, but mostly level (except for by the dam's spillway). Great place to come with kids.

My RV is a class B so Creekside is great because I didn't have to move. Dump station at check in location. Walk-ins are allowed after 4 pm but ONLY for the non-site specific spaces. The sites are paved but not necessarily level. The two rows closest to the creek get the most shade. No vehicles over 35'. Laundry room. Ice and firewood available from host. Host and park employees very friendly.

Lots to do in the park, hiking (great trails), biking, swimming, paddle boat and kayaking. We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Motorhome.

We stayed in Camp Bureson. It is right outside of the park. A ranger check in station is right there. It has a nice camp store with ice, the usual state park items for sale and ice cream! I would avoid the campground inside the park if you have a camper. The roads within the park itself are a bit scary. Camp Bureson has full hook ups with 50 amp service. It has a very new bathhouse. It even has washers and dryers that are only $1.50 a load. I loved coming home with clean laundry! Camp hosts were great. Very child friendly, easy for the kiddos to bike circles around the site. There is a creek nearby that many children enjoyed. You are a short distance from the dam's waterfall. The only other negative was the state run restaurant near the beach. They were having a REALLY bad night and it was not because it was crowded. We finally elected to leave without eating. There is a Wal-mart nearby and plenty of drug stores. The surrounding towns are fun to explore, and the people we're ever so nice. One half of Camp Bureson has plenty of shade. The other half has young trees. We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Hungry Mother State Park is well maintained and has lots of activities. We stayed at Camp Burson, formerly a private campground located on Rt. 16 below the dam, about a mile before reaching the main park entrance. Camp Burson has both full hookups and water/electric sites. The gravel sites are large, level, and well-spaced. The rest room/shower facilities are new, clean, and well maintained. There is no cable TV service, and an OTA antenna brings in only one station playing reruns of old shows. WiFi service is sporadic in the campground. Two sites, #9 & #11, have been converted to yurts. The park personnel were very friendly and helpful. There are additional camping facilities within the park for trailers and tents. The park has a large lake with a busy swimming beach, and boat & kayak rentals. There is a nice restaurant and local musician performances on Friday nights. There are many scenic hiking trails of various degrees of difficulty. During the summer, the park rangers offer many daily programs. The only downside is the premium camping fee without usual premium amenities (cable, WiFi). VA residents receive a discount, putting the price in a more acceptable range. We had a very pleasant stay and will visit again. We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Good ice cream shop at drive-in theater in Marion. Route 16 north of the park is "Back of the Dragon" for motorcycle riders. It is a scenic drive, but with many hills and sharp curves presents a significant challenge pulling a trailer or in a big rig. Best to approach the park on Rt. 16 from Marion.

We enjoyed the visit to this campground but fee too high. Spaces were adequate and staff was very friendly. Lots of different types of camping here, ranging from tents to motor homes. Out AT&T cell phones had no service but we were told Verizon usually worked. WiFi was very weak and not usable. We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Motorhome.

We arrived late afternoon after finding Hungry Mother on internet. Just stayed for one night due to being enroute to destination. Would have enjoyed a longer stay. This is a beautiful park on a lake nestled among the mountains. Though we didn't go, there is a beach, and a restaurant. Tried to go to the restaurant for breakfast, but it was closed on Wednesday morning. I understand there is a nice Sunday brunch. There are two camping sections, the Hungry Mother original park and Camp Burson, which was added to the park. Not being familiar with the park, we chose the HM park area. The road into this campground was narrow, winding, and had drop offs. Fortunately, we didn't meet anyone on a curve in the RV. Next time, we will choose Camp Burson. Our site was a backin next to a beautiful stream. Enjoyed watching a family of ducks on the stream. Could not get satellite due to heavy shade from trees though there were two empty pull thrus that would have worked. Our AT&T cell service would not pick up a signal either. Would like to return sometime for a longer stay. We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Motorhome.

We enjoyed this campground. Ample room in the pull-through site and not too close to our neighbor. All the hook-ups were convenient. The state park is very nice. We ended up with lots of rain during our stay so could not enjoy everything as we had hoped. We only stayed 2 nights. There were limited trees on our site, but lots in the park. The campground is near a creek and that made for fun. This was a quiet area and well maintained. The lantern hooks at the sites is a nice touch. Our 31 ft RV has slides on both sides. We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Travel Trailer.

$36 per night was for a mostly level but narrow asphalt pad pull-though site (#24) with 50-amp electric, water, and sewer in the Camp Burson campground. The reservation web site doesn't show sites for 40'+ RVs but the sites in Camp Burson are long enough to accommodate most any length RV. There are large trees throughout the campground and some sites might be challenging to set up on-watch your slides, awning, and basement compartment clearances-but it's doable. All sites have a wooden picnic table and fire ring. Enter the campground at the campground office driveway, not the first driveway to the campground as that access is quite steep. It was pleasantly quiet during my stay, even over the weekend when families arrived. The campground office was unmanned when I arrived but the campground host came by shortly after my arrival to give me my permits as well as information about the park including maps of the trails. The campground host was friendly and helpful. There are many activities available, which you can find listed on their website as well as in the brochures they give you. The campground is about five miles outside Marion where most any amenity is available. AT&T and Verizon cell signals were low but usable. Staying in Camp Burson includes free Wi-Fi, which I did not use. I received six digital over-the-air TV stations and many radio stations. We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Motorhome.

This place was awesome. There is plenty to do to have fun. We rented a paddle boat and kayaks. We went to a Nature Seminar that we all enjoyed. The beach is clean, there's a snack bar and bathrooms there too. Plenty of trails to hike and wonder around on. They have a restaurant in the Park, we heard good things about it but didn't eat there. There's a WalMart and Ingle's right on the way in if you need supplies. Our campground host was awesome! It was actually the first one I've actually met. Very helpful and available. The bath house has private showers and laundry available. We'll be back! We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Just FYI, the road from the entrance by the lake going back to the campground is TIGHT and curvy, about a 1/4 mile. The kind where if you're on the way in pulling a trailer, fifth wheel etc. there won't be enough room for 2 vehicles to pass in opposite directions.

$42 per night was for a level but narrow asphalt pad pull-though site with 50-amp electric, water, and sewer. Our site, #28 in the Camp Burson campground, did have a large tree on the street side that was close to the pad so it took a little maneuvering to get situated on the site so we could extend the slides and awning plus open the basement compartments. There are large trees throughout the campground and some sites are totally in the shade at all times. The site has a wooden picnic table and fire ring. Enter the campground at the campground office driveway, not the first driveway to the campground as that access is quite steep. It was pleasantly quiet during our stay, even over the weekend when many families arrived. The campground office was unmanned when we arrived but the campground host came by shortly after our arrival to give us our permits as well as information about the park including maps of the trails. Go over to the new addition for more room and the ability to get out easier without messing up the grass. They have a habit of placing a 18' trailer on a 20' site and people park so you have an issue of getting out of the old pull threw sites. Old site had sewer where newer sites only have water and electric. Easy access to dump site too. This is at Burson Campground. We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Stayed at Camp Burson for a few days. Very quiet and peaceful, with few campers. Campground has paved roads, large sites, restrooms and showers extremely clean. Some sites are FHU, good WiFi, good Verizon cell service, no cable and limited TV OTA. Sunday brunch at restaurant in the park was excellent! The Camp Burson campground is the best choice for big rigs & travel trailers, as the campground within the park is too small and congested for bigger rigs. We will definitely return to Hungry Mother S.P. again. We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This is a really nice campground. We stayed for three nights prior to the Fourth of July in Camp Burson which is just outside the main park. We had one of the RV sites with full hookups under the trees. Big, open, level site with full hookups. Our daughter and her family came and rented one of the cabins in the main park. Our step-daughter and our grandson stayed with us. Let me tell you, the kids had a blast. They spent most of their time in the lake, on the lake or under the lake. They swam, canoed and paddle-boated for three days. They hiked all around the park on the trails. Check out the restaurant. Excellent and good prices too. We camped at Hungry Mother State Park in a Travel Trailer.
