Traveling With Pot-bellied Pigs Options

Can anyone offer advice about RV'ing with a pot bellied pig? Do Campgrounds allow pigs? I know there is alot of "pignorance" out there regarding pot bellied pigs, but they are clean, intelligent and make wonderful pets; also quieter than dogs.

Please share any information that you may have? Thanks!

Never seen one at a campground except for the human kind. I would think it would not be easy. I used to have a pot belly myself, but have lost 55 pounds.

Good that you dropped off the 55 lbs. This way you will live a longer life now.

On the pigs, I do not think any park will let you in with them in tow. I could be wrong.

I have never seen anyone traveling with a pig. I would love it if someone would check in here and have one. I would love to see one and learn more about them.

Now that is a topic. I don't recall ever seeing any signs the forbade your pig but I do believe that most camp grounds would frown on the practice of RV & pigs, especially when you consider the beautification efforts they put forth on their parks. Since most parks put up signs for the doggy walk or dog part, where would you pig "go?"

How well does your pig interact with dogs? Sure hope it is social, as RV'ing places you in some pretty close quarters at times.

How much does it weigh? Will it reside in your rig quietly, when you are out and about?

As with any pet, the most important question is: Is travelling really fair to your pig?
Would he (or she) be HAPPY and SAFE on the road?

When you travel, how will your pig be able to get fresh air and exercise? I'd be hesitant to let him (or her) loose in a dog run area since you don't know how strange dogs may react. Will you be able to confine him outside somehow at your site? Those little pet fences are surely no match for a strong animal like a full grown pot bellied pig.

A park we were at last winter in FL was in an area where there was feral pig issue. We were told that we might hear gunshots of people trying to control the population. It would be awful if your pet got loose and someone confused him with one of those pigs!!

Our neighbor here at home had a pot bellied pig and we loved to see him out in his acre-large yard. After he outgrew their home, they built him a little 'cabin' to keep it safe at night. Fergie needed his space and was most definitely NOT a traveling kind of pig. Especially when he reached a couple hundred pounds in weight.

The neighbor's pig also "rooted" alot and really took a toll on his landscape, but that might have just been his nature and not true of all pot bellied pigs? Maybe cg owners are concerned with the damage aspect? Or maybe it's the swine flu thing being back in the news? Have you asked exactly why they don't allow domesticated pigs?

There are a number of state parks with equestrian facilities. We saw one a few months back in western VA where you could bring your own corral fencing and set it up at your site. Perhaps your pig might be happy and welcome in that setting?

We also stayed at a nice little private cg in Wilson, NC, that had several lovely burrows. Maybe a cg like that would think your pet is just the perfect visitor.

Quite frankly, I'd much rather have a pot bellied pig as a neighbor than a never-stop-yapping dog or always-screaming kids.

Some time ago we stopped at a casino rv park. While walking around the casino's park we happened to pass by a couple that had two pigs. They were quite large and we talked to them for a while. I don't remember where or when it was but it was very unusual. I have not seen anyone else with pigs since. If I find the pictures I will try to post one on the forum, if I can. I don't know if this forum allows that but maybe I can make a link to an online storage.

Ohmigosh! They're adorable! And they're also about half the size that our neighbors' pig grew to be.

I am a full timer traveling with a mini potbelly pig and other animals! All of the rv parks that I have traveled to have been extremely accomodating. You have to be ready for A LOT of attention because everyone in the park will be watching you walking your pig. Also, Most places say leash and clean up after your "pet". I always have my pig on a leash and clean up his poop. I do not take him in the pet runs when other dogs are in ther unless I am sure of the dog and owner. Most dogs just seem curious and confused by him, but I don't take any chances because he is quite small. I let the camp manager know when I check in that I am traveling with a pig and the worst trouble I have come across is having to take him up to the office to show him off!

Get a pig! Mine is a great traveler and companion!

We are staying at two different cg's in March. I emailed them to make sure it was OK to bring our mini-pig. Both places said yes and even suggested which sites had the most shade and grassy areas. Granted, my pig will only be 5 months old and @ 10 lbs in March, but they didn't even ask how big it was.
