I noticed my pump seemed to run slowly at times for about a week. Then it worked only intermittently for a day; that is, when I turned the switch on, it sometimes ran and sometimes didn't. Now the "Pump ON" light comes on dimly when the switch is turned to "ON" but the pump doesn't run. Would the light come on if the switch is bad?

The fact that the light is dim and that previously the pump was running slowly, indicate to me that you have a voltage issue somewhere in the circuit, probably a loose or corroded connection.
