We have booked at G of G campground in COS and definitely looking forward to it. First trip to the west for us and the boys are happy we have tennis in the area. Thanks again for posting the information you found. Leaving next Friday and now looking at what excursions we will do.
A day trip to Cripple Creek is great! It's a scenic drive and the old mining town of Cripple Creek is very historic. The highlight, though, is to take a trip down the Molly Kathleen Mine. It's reasonably priced and you ride down 1000 FEET in an actual mine elevator cage and then tour the mine. Very informative. The boys would probably love it. There's also a short coal-fired steam engine train ride to take that goes by several of the old mines.
The inclined railway ride up Pike's Peak is a must, too. There's also a hiking trail up the mountain on the site of another former railway out of Manitou Springs, but it looked a little too intensive for us old folks.
Another day trip would be to Royal Gorge. It's a "park" of sorts that has a bridge to walk over WAAAAY over the river, an inclined railway down into the gorge, a cable-car ride OVER the gorge and some other stuff, including people demonstrating old crafts. Admission price gets you as many rides on the facilities as you like, except for the swing-like thing that swings you out over the gorge (no loss there, in my opinion.....).
As you can see, we really like Colorado Springs.
