Visalia / Sequoia National Park KOA, Visalia, California

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $54.00
Overall Rating:

As KOAs go, this is not one of the stellar ones. One hour free Wifi per day is a misnomer. Once you log in you get one hour even if you are only on-line for 5 minutes it counts as an hour. Thankfully we had our own Verizon hotspot which provided 4g lte service. The effects of the drought and age are showing as there is a lot of brown (which is the new green in California) and the area is deteriorating due to this. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The pool, restrooms and laundry are very well maintained. We would stay here again. We camped at Visalia / Sequoia National Park KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Anthony Chabot Regional Park, Oakland, California

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed in a site with FHU. Very narrow road inside park and site pad was narrow and short. Our site was on the side of the hill so everything off the pad was uneven but this is expected in a regional park. The park itself is gorgeous and you truly get the feel of being in the middle of nowhere. Sites were spaced far enough apart that we didn't hear our neighbors on either side. The road in is an older, narrow, winding road which was an adventure pulling our trailer up and down. We would definitely stay here on a visit to the Bay Area. We camped at Anthony Chabot Regional Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Safeway market on Redwood Road at Castro Valley Blvd is closest market. Castro Valley Village next door is a quaint shopping center with "Mom and Pop" shops.

Sommerville Almond Tree RV Park, Coalinga, California

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $39.00
Overall Rating:

Excellent spot for an overnight stay between Los Angeles and the Bay Area. Older park but well maintained. Long, narrow site but adequate for our purposes. Pool was clean and refreshing after a long hot drive. Rest rooms clean and maintained. Close to the freeway but couldn't hear traffic noise. We camped at Sommerville Almond Tree RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Pirate Cove RV Resort & Marina, Needles, California

Date of Stay: October, 2015 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

Excellent site right on the Colorado River. We stayed here mid-week because of the park's offer. We were in a peninsula site (4 sites on a little peninsula with private beach) and had the entire peninsula to ourselves. We felt like we were boondocking in the middle of nowhere but with full hook ups and spotty WiFi. Showers, office and store were on the other side of the cove so we didn't use the facilities. This is a great get away for us in the off season as it is QUIET. We camped at Pirate Cove RV Resort & Marina in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

The closest major supermarket we found on a GPS search was in Lake Havasu, AZ but it was a nice day trip of sightseeing

Barstow / Calico KOA, Yermo, California

Date of Stay: October, 2015 - $42.00
Overall Rating:

We have been going to this campground on and off since 1988. This KOA is under new management and they have really made some improvements. The "antiques" which used to be in front of the office have been moved to the back of the campground where they put in large community fire rings. There is a new fenced in dog run with a picnic table and umbrella. Check-in was quick and the staff is very friendly and helpful. We were assigned a shady pull-through (which we requested on our reservations). The pool area has been upgraded with shade shelters, hammocks, and a barbecue grill. We camped at Barstow / Calico KOA in a Travel Trailer.

The Cove RV Resort (formerly Riviera RV Resort and Marina), Blythe, California

Date of Stay: October, 2015 - $42.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed here for 2 nights. Nice campground with both back in and pull-through sites. Check-in was easy and quick then we were guided to our site. Our site was all grass and level. As it was over 100 degrees we used their inviting and extremely clean pool. Park was very clean and fairly quiet. It is near the interstate but it is more like white noise than traffic noise. Campground is right on the Colorado River with an extremely large boat ramp. A few long term campers but their sites were clean and uncluttered. We camped at The Cove RV Resort (formerly Riviera RV Resort and Marina) in a Travel Trailer.

Do not buy fuel in Blythe...it is very expensive (even for California).

Hurkey Creek, Mountain Center, California

Date of Stay: July, 2015 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

Very nice county park in the mountains surrounded by large pines. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Park has no hookups but numerous water stations throughout the park. Restroom were not clean and 2 of the toilets in the women's restroom were clogged. Sites on upper loop are very uneven making it difficult to level a trailer (luckily, the recent storms created a ditch in the one side of our site which allowed us to place one wheel in to level). We camped at Hurkey Creek in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

No dump station; however, Lake Hemet Campground is 1.0 mile down the road and we dumped there for a $12.00 fee. There is also a market there.

Black Rock Campground (NPS Campgound), Yucca Valley, California

Date of Stay: May, 2015 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

Very nice campground for the price. Roads in the park are mostly dirt and broken pavement. Sites are uneven but spacious. The road into the campground has recently been repaved. The staff is very friendly. Views from the campground are spectacular. We would definitely stay here again. We camped at Black Rock Campground (NPS Campgound) in a Travel Trailer.
