Point Bluff Campground, Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin

Date of Stay: June, 2015 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

We have camped at Point Bluff annually since 2012, so this was our third visit. This is a small (17 total sites) campground on the Wisconsin River. As part of the larger property there is a permanent trailer park / summer camp on the other side of the clubhouse / bar. We have camped in site 1, 17 and 5. We prefer those along the river and away from the landing / beach, sites 3-8.

We camped in a truck camper twice and in a tent once. ONLY a tent camper can use site 17. It is up a steep slope that would be impossible to get a camper in, and the canoes/tubes often are staged on this hill on the weekend. Site 17 is a beautiful getaway site though with good access to the restrooms/shower house and the clubhouse. Sites 1-16 are located in a shady, grassy grove. The sites are not well-defined and you are fairly close to your neighbors. We were with a bunch of friends and this was not a problem for us.

People camp at Point Bluff so they can tube/canoe the Wisconsin River and come off the river and not have to drive. It is IDEAL for that purpose. There is a bar / clubhouse on site that serves food. There are group campsites. The campground area only has porta potties. The shower room / flush toilets are across the campgrounds and into the trailer park. The first year we were there, they were filthy and the toilets were clogged. This was due to those on the group site. The last two years the restrooms have been much cleaner. We camped at Point Bluff Campground in a Truck Camper.

Tips for other Campers:

They serve a delicious Bloody Mary in the bar. Hundreds of people descend on Point Bluff starting at 8 AM to sign up for and line up for tubing and canoeing. Get all of your business with the office done Friday night.

High Cliff State Park, Sherwood, Wisconsin

Date of Stay: June, 2015 - $17.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed in site 92 while our friends camped in 90. Both are in the outer left loop. They are pretty far from the only shower room/rest rooms, but pit toilets are not far. Overflow parking is directly across the road from 92 but while we were there, we were the only ones to use it (for our toad).

Both sites are beautifully tree-filled, which is true of the entire campgrounds. Our sites were level and most others seemed level too. There are double sites for those wanting to share a site.

Being on the outer extreme of the campground, we had easy access to the walking/bike trail and rode to a lookout each night to watch the sunset. It was an easy 5 minute ride and was walkable too. The hiking trails are easily accessible too. The Lime Kiln Trail can be muddy, so wear sturdy shoes.

The campground is quiet, peaceful and clean. The bathrooms are cleaned daily between 12:30 and 2 pm and always looked neat. I would prefer each shower stall have more room to change within the stall but there is one that offers privacy if you are willing to wait for it.

Do not leave out any food or unsecured garbage as you may have raccoon visitors when the sun goes down.

We can't wait to go back! We camped at High Cliff State Park in a Truck Camper.

Tips for other Campers:

There was a triathlon being held on the Saturday we were there but the park was still fully accessible. Given a choice though, I would prefer to stay when such an event wasn't going on as the trails and roads were in use for the triathlon.

Richard Bong State Recreation Area, Kansasville, Wisconsin

Date of Stay: May, 2015 - $17.00
Overall Rating:

Bong has two campgrounds: Sunrise, which is relatively near the entrance on 142, and Sunset, which is all the way across the park on the western end. Only Sunrise has electric sites. We camped in Sunrise campground in site #224 two different weekends in May 2015.

The sites all have gravel pads upon which you must park. Each site also has a fire ring with a very nice grill grate and a picnic table. The sites have some small trees and shrubs between then but mostly Sunrise is open, grassy sites other than a small strip in sites 145-150. There is not much privacy when you are on your site. We had friends on adjacent sites 222 and 223. 223 has the least amount of privacy of the three. All 3 are maybe a three minute walk to the bathrooms with flush toilets and showers. The ladies restroom had a lot of vandalism in the stalls that the park had clearly tried to cover/remove several times. The restroom floors are terrazzo and were wet and slick both weekends we were there. Shower pressure was OK but not overwhelming. The water is warm but temperature is not adjustable.

We had to deal with rangers because my MIL has difficulty walking and uses a golf cart. We called in advance of going to the park and were told the cart was OK. Once we arrived, one ranger woke up my inlaws to tell them not to use it and then later told us his boss had said to wait for us to use it and issue $300 ticket. No where in its campground rules does it say golf carts are not allowed but don't bring one even if you are disabled. We camped at Richard Bong State Recreation Area in a Truck Camper.

Tips for other Campers:

They sell firewood near the ranger station as well as at 2 farms just outside the park. Best deals outside the park.
