Mission Bay RV Resort, San Diego, California

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $75.00
Overall Rating:

This campground is all about location! It is essentially a parking lot filled with as many RVs as possible. It is very hard to get into sites due to the crowding. That said, the security people were very good and the many trash cans were always neat and ready to use. Restrooms were clean, however the handicapped parking spaces in front of them needed to have a time limit or something so that they aren't used overnight. A truck was constantly parked by the one near our site making it nearly impossible to get our rig parked (it took 4 very knowledgeable neighbors 20 minutes to help us back and fill our way in). We camped at Mission Bay RV Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Morefield Campground (NPS), Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

After driving all over the campground, we selected a site in the field at the front of the Walpi Loop off of Hopi Rd. There are very few big rig-friendly dry camping sites. Concrete curbs at the back of the sites make them all the more restricted. We camped at Morefield Campground (NPS) in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

The climb up to the campground is steep and hard on transmissions. There had been a lightning strike a couple of days prior to our visit which knocked out wifi service and took the ATMs, credit card readers, and gas pumps offline throughout the Park. It would be good to be aware of that possibility! We saw a bear with two cubs on our way to the cliff dwellings and a bobcat on the other side of the canyon from Cliff Palace as well as plenty of mule deer by our trailer.

Lake Mead Recreational Area - Willow Beach, Lake Mead Recreational Area, Arizona

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

This is a gorgeous campground with views of the Colorado and surrounding canyon. It was 114° when we pulled into our site in early July and only got down into the low 90°s at night, so expect the heat if visiting in the summer. The site was an immaculate pull-through with good water pressure (all water was hot- no need for a water heater!) and electric. No cell service, but free wifi available. The road into the campground is steep, rough, and curvy. Would not be fun at all in a rainstorm! We camped at Lake Mead Recreational Area - Willow Beach in a Fifth Wheel.

There are many Gamble's quail around the campground as well as big horned sheep which come down from the mountains to drink from the river.

Dead Horse Point State Park, Moab, Utah

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

Dead Horse Point is conveniently located between Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. The sites were extremely private with small pine and juniper trees providing lots of cover. Our site had two groomed tent pads as well as a lovely sheltered picnic table with a light and cabinet for food storage. Sites were level with electronic and limited cellular service. We camped at Dead Horse Point State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

North Rim Campground (NPS Campground), Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

This is a lovely, well-shaded, extremely quiet campground. There are many tall pine trees, but we had no trouble navigating through the park with our 40' fifth wheel. There are no hookups available, but are plentiful water spigots and reasonable generator hours. Internet/ phone service was spotty at best with a little spotty wifi available at the market. Laundry facilities were clean and reasonable. Our site wasn't particularly level and was on the left side of the road, putting our living area on the road side. No worries as there was so much room allotted for the rest of the site. We camped at North Rim Campground (NPS Campground) in a Fifth Wheel.

The mule rides were wonderful, dinner at the Lodge is fabulous, and don't miss the stars from the Lodge veranda! We loved the North Rim- much, much quieter and more laid back than the South Rim.

Great Sand Dunes Oasis RV Park, Mosca, Colorado

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

We only stayed at Oasis for one night because our favorite spot (San Luis) has become exorbitantly expensive for those of us from out of state. The sites at Oasis are incredibly crowded. While they do provide full hookups and close proximity to the National Park, I would rather save money ($46+ with taxes and fees) and stay somewhere else less crowded. We camped at Great Sand Dunes Oasis RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Lake McClellan National Grassland Park, Clarendon, Texas

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

McClelland Creek National Grasslands is a short drive from the interstate, off a paved 2-lane road. Interior gravel roads are easily navigable with a big rig and sites are spacious. Campground is very quiet with few campers (we stayed during the week, however it was July 3rd, so would have expected it to be busier with holiday traffic). The area around the lake is quite scenic with deer and wading birds coming out at dusk. A lovely place to hike and bring binoculars! We camped at Lake McClellan National Grassland Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Great Salt Plains State Park, Jet, Oklahoma

Date of Stay: June, 2015 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

There are two campgrounds- we stayed at the nicer of the two along the river down from the spillway. THE OTHER CAMPGROUND IS BAD FOR TALL RIGS! (We lost a vent cap and broke a piece off our A/C shroud when driving through.) The mosquitos were bad even during the day, but site was nice. Also had a great playground. We spent one night and never saw a ranger, so owe the state of Oklahoma $20. We camped at Great Salt Plains State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Devils Tower / Black Hills KOA, Devils Tower, Wyoming

Date of Stay: June, 2015 - $61.00
Overall Rating:

Our site was an easy, level pull-through under a tree. While there are no fire rings at the sites, there are a few group rings that the campground hosts set up each night. Our site had one next door. Laundry facilities were in disrepair. Pool was in desperate need of cleaning with murky, greasy water. We camped at Devils Tower / Black Hills KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

We loved Coulter Bay and would return in a heartbeat. The sites were good-sized, level, and shaded without being too hard to get in and out of. The store, activities center, visitors' center, and marina are all a short bike ride/walk away. We camped at Colter Bay Village RV Park -- Full Hookups (Concessionaire Operated) in a Fifth Wheel.

Green River Campground, Jensen, Utah

Date of Stay: June, 2015 - $12.00
Overall Rating:

This campground was in a gorgeous location along the bank of the Green River. The rock formations are jaw-dropping. Sites we're pull-through and level with fire pits and picnic tables. No electric or water, but no need for a generator once the sun set and it cooled off. Very quiet. We camped at Green River Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Orilla Verde Recreation Area, Pilar Campground BLM, Pilar, New Mexico

Date of Stay: June, 2015 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

This campground is in close proximity to Taos. Though close to the access road, it was quiet and well-kept with level, easily accessible sites. The hosts suggested that we hike the trail that went off from the campground which turned out to be the highlight of our stay for our boys! We suggest not taking 567 north out of the gorge unless you have a truck with 4-wheel drive that can handle a serious climb in gravel (though if you do, the view is spectacular!). We camped at Orilla Verde Recreation Area, Pilar Campground BLM in a Fifth Wheel.
