Pinnacles Campground, Pinnacles National Park, California

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $17.00
Overall Rating:

The campsite is rustic and well off the beaten path. The staff was friendly and helpful. The campground has lovely, old growth oak trees. There's a swimming pool to help cool off. There's no Wi-Fi except at the store, and no water/sewer available at the site (but it is close by). Very quiet. And if there is no moon at night, the Milky Way is easily viewable (very little light pollution). I will re-visit for the hiking. We camped at Pinnacles Campground in a Motorhome.

Folsom Lake SRA - Beals Point Campground, Folsom, California

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $60.00
Overall Rating:

Clean, fairly well maintained. No Wi-Fi or TV but cell signal was good. No parking off the pavement. Wildlife in the area (I saw turkeys, lizards and rabbits). Ample shopping close to the area. Having another mode of transportation is a good idea. We camped at Folsom Lake SRA - Beals Point Campground in a Motorhome.

Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve, Santee, California

Date of Stay: November, 2016 - $31.00
Overall Rating:

Santee Lakes used to be a great value but in the last year, they've raised their monthly rates significantly without putting that money to use. The roads and sites are in poor condition. The Wifi and cell coverage is horrible and I had to leave the park in order to make phone calls with any assurance of not having a dropped call. These are important factors to us full-time RVers. And there is serious construction occurring on the west side overlooking the campground so instead of looking at mountains, we'll be soon looking at tract homes. Unfortunately, the 'bang-for-the-buck' has seriously diminished at Santee Lakes. We camped at Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

There is good stuff all in the area. Carlton Oaks Golf Course has a decent bistro and bar, there's good Mexican at Murrieta's, Thai food at Sab-e-Lee, and the quintessential Mary's Donuts. I'll go back, just not as often...

Lake Jennings, Lakeside, California

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $26.00
Overall Rating:

I live in my RV and I stayed here for a month and the daily price is based on the monthly rate. The Wifi is above average but better than most places I've stayed. The laundry is so-so but otherwise, this place is a great deal and I will stay here again. We camped at Lake Jennings in a Motorhome.

Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve, Santee, California

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

I live in my RV and stay here often. The place has good amenities; pool, spa, laundry, playground, etc.. But the roads are in poor shape with the asphalt chipping away in hunks. And the Wifi is horrible, the worst of any camp I've ever stayed in. The cell coverage is spoty at best. The complaints have fallen on deaf ears. But the worst is that the park has just raised its rates significantly for the long-termers. That wouldn't be bad but the roads still have not been repaired and I still have to leave the park to make a phone or download email. There is no military discount at this park, either. We camped at Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve in a Motorhome.

La Jolla Indian Reservation Campground, Pauma Valley, California

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Not a bad place but it's dusty and dry. The campground was crowded and noisy with weekender inner-tubers for their 'Lazy River' tube experience. The zip line course was awesome. We camped at La Jolla Indian Reservation Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

This campground is well off the beaten track so ensure your shopping is done. There is a 'Trading Post' but I didn't stop in so I'm not sure what is in there. You must also realize you are on an Indian Reservation and their rules are stricter than most over camp grounds: no glass bottles, no pallets for firewood, etc. The rules are listed in the confirmation letter.

West Glacier KOA, West Glacier, Montana

Date of Stay: June, 2016 - $55.00
Overall Rating:

The KOA in Glacier is huge, almost un-personal. The grounds are nice, though with a great view of the mountains. The place seems to have all the required amenities; a outdoor restaurant that serves a fair breakfast and good dinner (no lunch), an ice cream stand, a laundry, and a decent store. and to give a 'shout-out' to the Grill; their flat steaks are awesome. We camped at West Glacier KOA in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

We had a family reunion here and the KOA was perfect for it. The staff attempted to get us co-located but it just wasn't in the cards (poor execution on my family's part). It's an easy drive to Glacier National Park. The only downside to our stay was that there was a fatal bear attack (29 June 2016) close to this campground the day we departed.

Ely KOA, Ely, Nevada

Date of Stay: June, 2016 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

It's as can be expected from a KOA. It's small, but had a grass patch to sit on. The campground was quiet and well maintained. The service was friendly. The cost was a little steep ($45) but I'm glad to have the security of an established campground, full services (if I choose to use them), and confirmed reservations. My only issue was the electrical panel cover on their shore power stanchion was loose and fell on my foot. I danced a little... We camped at Ely KOA in a Motorhome.

Lake Jennings, Lakeside, California

Date of Stay: January, 2016 - $26.00
Overall Rating:

The nightly rate is based on a month's stay. The park is rustic but everything works. There's a modern playground and lodge. The sites are a little un-level but graveled. It's well off the 'beaten path' so there's no amenities close by. The park also does not offer propane. The wifi worked very well. I will stay here again. We camped at Lake Jennings in a Motorhome.

Sweetwater Summit Regional Park, Bonita, California

Date of Stay: June, 2015 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

The views are nice and there's always a breeze. It's pretty much off the beaten path but that's part of the appeal. You have to tow your second vehicle behind your RV or you will be charged an additional $4 a day. I do not have a tow package for my Infiniti and will not buy one. No other RV park in the San Diego area requires the second car be towed in except the San Diego county parks. When I mentioned this to the ranger, they told me that the other private campgrounds build the $4 a day into their fees. That's not true. As a long term camper, I can stay at a number of local RV parks for less than $30 a night and get a second car for no additional charge.

Also, there's only one way in and out. If someone is checking in, you'll get caught at the gate until the transaction is complete. The rangers haven't figured out how to check people in and wave others through the gate at the same time. I guess they don't think it's inconvenient for campers to sit behind someone for three to five minutes. And if you leave early, you don't get your money refunded. We camped at Sweetwater Summit Regional Park in a Motorhome.

Three Rivers Hideaway, Three Rivers, California

Date of Stay: June, 2015 - $44.00
Overall Rating:

I found this place on the Internet and decided to take a chance on it. The National Park frowns on RVs larger than 25' so my 30 footer would be a problem in the park. We used a second vehicle for the parks. Parking the RV was pretty easy, the host was awesome, and the amenities worked as advertised. And it was inexpensive compared to other places. I will admit it was a bit rustic but everything worked. If I'm ever in that neighborhood again, I would most definitely stay at Three Rivers Hideaway! Very recommended...
