Candy Hill Campground, Winchester, Virginia

Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

It's a nice campground and easy to get to; however the restrooms/showers are a bit rundown and some of the staff are in need of some customer service training. It's pretty easy to navigate; however some of the spots they put people in is REALLY tight. We camped at Candy Hill Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

There's plenty of things close to there and they have a game room, laundry, activities and a pool (didn't use so not sure if it was clean). They tend to fill up pretty quick because of local activities - which I assume is why they are not the friendliest staff around (and why they are a bit more expensive than most we stay at). It's pretty enough there and we've stayed twice - the first visit was definitely better than the 2nd visit.

Easy to get to; right off of the highway. This is a good over night stop and the staff was very nice. It's really close to shopping so you can resupply and get a bit of rest before heading on. We camped at Tri-State RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Auburn RV Park at Leisure Time Campground, Auburn, Alabama

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

This is right off of the highway and pretty convenient to get to; although it can be a little misleading trying to find the actual entrance. It overlooks a softball field so you might be able to watch a little league game when you are there. The sites range from 'down by the river' to more open and mostly gravel on the top part of the park. It can be a little tricky to navigate; but just take your time. The first time we stayed there they let us change sites because there was no way we were going to be able to navigate into the site they originally booked us in. Both times we've stayed the staff has been very friendly and helpful and they offer late check-ins - so you can come in late and just catch up with them the next day to actually check in. There seems to be plenty of things to do in the area; although we've always stayed here while in transit - so both times it was just overnight. We camped at Auburn RV Park at Leisure Time Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

As you get to the lower end of the park the road is a big harder to navigate; but doable. I don't think there's a pool and the restrooms are on the older side; but it's a convenient place to stop over and we would definitely stay here again.

Riverside Campground & Resort, Sevierville, Tennessee

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

They've recently renovated their restrooms/showers are they are exceptionally clean. Most of the staff is friendly; however a few seemed to be having an off day. We've stayed here several times over the last few years and overall it's one of our favorites. It's easy to get to; plenty of things to do in the area and the sites are pretty nice. The pool was nice and clean. The laundry room was also clean and reasonably priced. We camped at Riverside Campground & Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

The front part of the park has plenty of shaded slots; which is nice. The back part of the park is newer and lacks the same appeal as the front half - but it's still a very nice park. Overall the other campers have always been friendly and the staff is mostly friendly. This is a convenient place to stop for us when traveling and they offer late check-in if needed. We would definitely recommend and will be staying here again in the future.

Silver Slipper Casino RV Park, Waveland, Mississippi

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $49.00
Overall Rating:

This is a no-frills RV park; basically a parking lot with full hook-up, a dedicated trash can and picnic table. What makes it AWESOME as far as we are concerned is how close we are to the beach. The Silver Slipper Casino owns this part of the beach so it's not crowded, it's clean and it's literally right across the two lane road. We always stay in the spots closest to the road - so you can walk out your door, across the two lanes and you are on the beach - can't get much better than that! We stayed here in 2015 and signed up for their Players Club - which gave us two nights free; so that was an even better bargain. The casino has a WONDERFUL buffet; but be warned - the lines are crazy so get there early. Be careful with the directions; the GPS wants to take you through the little town and there's an issue with clearance if you take one of those routes (meaning you will rip the bottom out of your camper) - so be sure to take I10 to 90 to Lake Shore Road (and nothing else). They empty the dedicated trash cans every day and security rolls thru the park in the evenings. They've become more popular so they fill up fast. We really enjoy this spot. We camped at Silver Slipper Casino RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

You can pick up fresh local seafood from the fishing boats; go up to the casino for a wonderful buffet or go into town - all easy enough. You are only 45 minutes or so from New Orleans - we went there for the day. We always stay on the side close to the road; as we've been told the sites in the back get pretty buggy - but we don't know for sure.

Candy Hill Campground, Winchester, Virginia

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $48.00
Overall Rating:

Easy access from highway. Mostly back-in sites and can be pretty tight; they do escort you to your site and will guide you as you back in. Check-in guy was nice enough, but not friendly. Roads in park are paved and easy to navigate. We had a picnic table, concrete pad and you can request a fire ring (which they will bring you). They have a game room with a pool table and several arcade games; as well as a nicely maintained pool. Laundry room has AC and is reasonably priced - but it's small. Bathrooms also have AC - but both need a bit of maintenance. Park is pretty and has a nice size store; they even sell fresh eggs. We camped at Candy Hill Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Local pizza place delivers right to the park and the park sells propane and all the basic stuff at their store. We unhooked and went to fill up on diesel and pick up a few things. Limited number of TV stations. It's a nice/quiet park and convenient as a stop-over (although it's a little pricey).

This is a perfect place if you just need to stop for the night. Easy in/out from the highway. Walmart is right down the road but no overnight stays are allowed (they have plenty of signs saying no overnight allowed; however I know at least one or two did). Staff is very friendly. Sites are pretty level; they are hard packed gravel instead of the loose stuff. A lot of permanents there; however everyone seemed friendly. This is a no frills park; but it's prefect for overnight to get some rest. River is right there as well, so plenty of water activities available in the area. Convenient to Walmart, gas, and places to eat. We would stay here again if passing through. We camped at Tri-State RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Warrior RV Park, Tulsa, Oklahoma

Date of Stay: October, 2016 - $33.00
Overall Rating:

This is a family owned park and the owners, as well as those that help them are WONDERFUL. The park is easy to reach and quite convenient to a lot of things in the area. The park is an older park but everything is super clean - which they take very seriously. The laundry room has a/c and again is super clean. There is no pool; otherwise I would have given it a 10.

We were in Tulsa (from MD) to trade in our TT for a 5th wheel at Bob Hurly RV and the park was really helpful. We ended up getting there a day early and they happily accommodated. The next day we did the swap over and they allowed us to use the slot beside our camper to do so - this was so much better than trying to do it at the dealership! We needed to extend our stay by a day and again they were able to accommodate. They have a number of live-ins there but everyone is so nice and the park is so clean you wouldn't really know. We had the chance to talk to the owners several times and it was like we've known them for years - how cool is that! Ask the office about things to do and for directions; we found their directions were better than the GPS. While this is a no frills park it is very clean, convenient and the people are top notch. We will stay here again - almost can't wait. We camped at Warrior RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Branson Lakeside RV Park, Branson, Missouri

Date of Stay: October, 2016 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

The location is great - very convenient to downtown Branson and the free trolly picks you up right at the park (stop #1). The staff is WONDERFUL; the location and the staff is the reason for the good review score. The bathrooms are old and a bit smelly; although they are relatively clean. They only clean them twice a week and they are closed for 3 hrs (9-12). That laundry was overpriced but the worst part is when they decide to break they hold your clothes hostage! We wasted several hours trying to get our clothes from the washer (this was the most insane experience I've ever had) - they ultimately had to take a pry bar to the machine! The staff were AWESOME and did everything they could. The problem is it's a city owned park and the laundry machines are leased - so they couldn't get ahold of anyone for hours. The sites are also quite tight; we could not put our awning out all the way or we would have hit the motor home beside us. They escort you to your site - which is helpful if you come in at night (especially because of the big boulders at the end of many of the sites). We watched someone crunch their backend trying to get out of there one morning. The Wifi was great - one of the best connections we've ever had in fact. The picnic tables are pretty old but we really couldn't sit outside anyway because it was too tight. There were other sites where you could sit outside comfortably though. They were pretty full so we are glad they were able to accommodate us. The interior roads are a bit tight but manageable. We camped at Branson Lakeside RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Take the free trolly and be sure to check with the office for discounted tickets or just great ideas on where to eat or what to do. They recommended two restaurants that we loved - both family owned and in old downtown. Honestly if it wasn't for the wonderful staff we probably would not recommend this place.

RedRock RV Park, Island Park, Idaho

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $58.00
Overall Rating:

The owner was amazing; so were the other workers there. You couldn't ask for nicer people to deal with; truly a wonderful change! The park is out in the country - very pretty and not a bad drive from the main road. It is a "bear aware" park - but they keep it very clean. A number of campers were not adhering to the "no coolers outside" - not sure why that wasn't enforced though. We stayed 3 nights.

They really drive home their "quiet hours" - unfortunately this is one thing that isn't enforced. This was the noisiest campground in our 7,000-mile trip - including the ones near highways and train tracks. The noise was from other campers - at night they kept at it until quite late - but the worst was in the morning. We didn't know people could slam doors so hard and so often. And the noise stared at 6 AM and continued until 10 or so. They actually stated mowing very early (never had a place do this before) and the craziest thing was mowing around our site WHILE we were breaking down. We really didn't appreciate that at all.

There is no cable (no over the air either) and the WiFi is sketchy. This is to be expected based on where it's located so we had no problem with that - just a heads up for others. They limit the amount of data you can use and the family beside us had their WiFi turned off without warning.

They sell firewood however it was too windy while we were there to have a fire. If it hadn't have been for the noise - and the emphasis on being quiet - we would rate this higher. This is a tough review because we really appreciated their help and totally enjoyed talking to their staff and the area. The lack of amenities was even OK - but the noise was unacceptable. All of the hosts live there (and owners) so they had to have heard it and they need to revise their mowing policy. We camped at RedRock RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Hart Ranch Camping Resort, Rapid City, South Dakota

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $61.00
Overall Rating:

This is a members only campground (gatehouse with security) - however if they are not full they do allow non-members to stay there. Unfortunately they only allow for a two night stay. We would say if you have the opportunity to stay here you should. Everyone was incredibly nice and we mean everyone. The campground has some unique history to it and they even come around and give you a welcome package the first morning. Now we know it's their opportunity to pass on some sales information; however, there is no sales pitch other than to hand you the info with the free coffee cup, pen, etc.

They have a huge pool that is very clean and well maintained along with hot tubs, pickleball courts, their own gas station (with a reasonable price), camp store, etc. It is easy to get to and very close to Mt. Rushmore (20 minutes) and a number of other places. We actually visited Deadwood after we left Mt. Rushmore.

We really loved this place and if we lived closer we probably would have joined. Their quiet time is actually quiet, the bathrooms/showers are the best we've EVER been in. There were three full bathrooms inside the bathhouse - meaning in addition to the normal sinks and bathroom stalls there were also three private bathrooms. You close the door and have a vanity, toilet and sink - they even had complimentary shampoo and cream rinse on the sink. Each bathhouse was like this. Everyone picked up after their pets and the park was incredibly clean. Even the WiFi worked - although it was slow and could be spotty. We camped at Hart Ranch Camping Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Ruby's Inn RV Park and Campground, Bryce Canyon, Utah

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $44.00
Overall Rating:

Check in was a bit of a pain - it took three people to get our correct reservation; however this was really the only problem we ran into. The wifi was spotty - sometimes it would work (very slow) but mostly it didn't. We had cell service though so I just used our AT&T hotspot.

We were in the new section which was very nice with a ton of space and grass w/ underground irrigation. The trees in this section are still pretty new; however this was really one of the nicest parks we stayed at on this trip. The shuttle bus that takes you through Bryce Canyon picks up right at the front entrance of the park. We decided to drove through Bryce though because it was so convenient. We drove to Zion the following day and if you are not a hiker you can do Kanabe and Zion in the same day. The laundry room was one of the cleanest I've ever been in and all machines seemed to be working without issue. The cost per load to wash and dry is a bit high; however seemed to be close to others that we ran into on this trip. The pool was large and clean and they had hot tubs (which we didn't use). We would stay here again - we enjoyed the park and location. We camped at Ruby's Inn RV Park and Campground in a Travel Trailer.

We ate at the Ruby's restaurant the first night and our food was cold and service was slow; not what we we expected - especially for the price. They charge a pretty penny yet our frozen vegetables were ice cold - and I do mean ice cold. Everything on the plate was cold - even the plate. They brought out new servings of veggies and mashed potatoes and they were also cold so we gave up. They could have just had an off night - everything else was wonderful.

Buckeye Lake / Columbus East KOA, Buckeye Lake, Ohio

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $62.00
Overall Rating:

We were out a month on this trip and this was the most over priced and rudest places we stayed. How it received the 2016 Presidents award is beyond us! The lady that took our reservation could have cared less if we stayed there or not and it was like playing 20 questions. The boys on their golf carts who 'escort' you to your site need some training and some manners. Several of the cabins there are COVERED with several inches worth of green moss and the Mosquitos were horrible - the worst we've encountered. We get that it's shady and whatever - however most of this comes down to maintenance; it didn't happen overnight or over the course of a week. There was standing water everywhere - thus the infestation of mosquitos. The sites are close together and the fire rings are dangerously close to vehicles. We were charged $62 instead of the posted $48 with no explanation. We requested a pull thru and didn't plan on unhooking since we were just passing thru. Well of course that didn't happen either - it seems we were charged a premium rate for pull thru (according to the golf cart kid) but the site was backwards. To stay hooked up we would have been over halfway out in the road and would have needed miles of hoses. He then tells us that 'maybe' he can find us a pull thru but we probably wouldn't have sewer. Really!?!? So we had to go thru the extra work of unhooking and hooking up.

Cable was good and wifi didn't work at all.

We would NOT stay here again; period. We would either stay at the truck stop, a Walmart, or just about anywhere else other than here. We spent the most closest to home and was the most disappointed! We camped at Buckeye Lake / Columbus East KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

It's right in town and not too bad to get to - you just need to take it easy. There is a nice BBQ restaurant on site and you get a discount since you are staying at the park; the food was pretty good. There seemed to be a number of locals eating there so that's always a good sign. It's quite close to a number of attractions; although we were just passing through. This was one park where the wifi did work - it wasn't blazing fast but at least it stayed connected. We would stay again if in the area. There was a large mud puddle at the end of our original site and no matter what, one of us would be wading through it. We requested another site and they gladly accommodated - which we very much appreciated. The park could use a bit of maintenance - but for being in the city it wasn't bad. The sites were level overall. We would stay again. We camped at Cahokia RV Parque in a Travel Trailer.
