Lincoln Parish Park, Ruston, Louisiana

Date of Stay: January, 2019 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

This is an exceptional county park where plenty of trees surround a very nice lake. Everything was immaculate. The newly renovated waterfront sites offer the best views. There is a paved trail around the lake and many trails for hiking or biking through the forest. There was no wi-fi but we had good LTE (AT&T) service. Located just 10 minutes off I-20, this is great for a one nighter or an extended stay. We stayed one night in site #21, a back-in with W/E/S and would happily stay here again. We camped at Lincoln Parish Park in a Travel Trailer.

Little Tallapoosa Park, Carrollton, Georgia

Date of Stay: January, 2019 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed one night in site #13, a pull-thru with W/E/S. Very easy in and out. This spacious county park opened in 2012 so everything is new, nice, and clean. It's about 10 minutes off I-20 in a woodsy area so our cell coverage (AT&T) was spotty. There is no wi-fi. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to check out the lake or the trails. This is an excellent park for a sleep-and-go (which we had to do) or a longer getaway stay in nature. We would happily stay here again. We camped at Little Tallapoosa Park in a Travel Trailer.

Mama Gertie's Hideaway Campground, Swannanoa, North Carolina

Date of Stay: January, 2019 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

The sections of the campground are cut into the side of a mountain with three levels of elevation. The top level offers incredible views of the surrounding area and is the signature feature of this park. We came here planning to get one of those sites, but that section was closed for the winter. I believe I heard the lady at the desk say they had to be reserved a year in advance. The park is very clean and easily accessible from the interstate. It is only 10-15 minutes to the Biltmore and the rest of Asheville. We had full LTE coverage (AT&T) and the wi-fi was good. It'd be really nice to come back here and get one of the sites up on the mountain. We stayed one night in site #25, a back-in with W/E/S/C. We camped at Mama Gertie's Hideaway Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Pine Ridge Campground, Roebuck, South Carolina

Date of Stay: January, 2019 - $42.00
Overall Rating:

What a wonderful, hospitable family that owns this campground! They are super friendly and go above and beyond to make your stay enjoyable, which we appreciated very much. For example, even though it had recently stopped raining, they offered to turn on the inflatable jump pad for our kids. This is a tidy campground with attention to detail. The bathrooms were immaculate, as clean as any we've seen all over the country. I caught several bass on their one acre catch-and-release pond and the kids enjoyed feeding the ducks. We had full LTE cell service (AT&T) and the wi-fi was good. We stayed one night in site #31, a pull-thru with full hook ups. If you need to camp in the Spartanburg area, do yourself a favor and come stay with these kind folks. We camped at Pine Ridge Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Chewacla State Park, Auburn, Alabama

Date of Stay: December, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

We love visiting Auburn and this was our first time camping there. The park is very conveniently located just off the interstate and a short drive into town. Between people staying for football season and the many visitors utilizing the numerous trails for hiking and biking, the park shows some wear, but things are clean so it is fine for us. The lake is great for fishing, swimming, or kayaking. We had full LTE cell service (AT&T). We would stay here again. We stayed one night in site #35, a pull thru site with full hook ups. We camped at Chewacla State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Big Creek 10 Water Park, Soso, Mississippi

Date of Stay: December, 2018 - $21.00
Overall Rating:

Despite having "water park" in its name, this is not a commercial park. It is operated by a Mississippi water authority governmental agency. Beautiful tall pines fill the campground and surround a nice, clean lake. We visited in the off-season, but certainly this is a destination for water recreation in the warm months. The park is conveniently located about 10 minutes from Laurel. Sites are spacious, shady, and convenient to the water. Facilities and grounds were very well kept. We had full LTE cell service (AT&T). This is a great spot for a sleep-and-go or as a longer getaway. We would definitely stay here again. We stayed one night in site #39, a pull thru site with full hook ups. Lake Claiborne State Park, Homer, Louisiana

Date of Stay: December, 2018 - $31.00
Overall Rating:

This is a beautiful state park about 20 minutes off I-20. The waterfront sites are $5 more per night, but they have their own little dock which would be great during swim season or for a jet ski, boat, etc.. The lake is surrounded by gorgeous pines and has a good reputation for fishing. The bath houses were quite nice, very clean, and even had washers and dryers available (for free, I think). This would be a perfect spring or summer time vacation spot. Our cell service (AT&T) was spotty. We'd love to return for a longer stay where we could take full advantage of the lake. We stayed one night in site #22, a waterfront, pull thru site with I believe full hook ups (we didn't connect the sewer but I think there was a sewer connection). We camped at Lake Claiborne State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Catherine's Landing, Hot Springs, Arkansas

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $63.00
Overall Rating:

This is an incredible, luxurious campground. The sites are spacious and level. Amenities abound everywhere: the pool, the lake, the indoor spaces, the pavilion are all A+! The bathhouses were as nice as a luxury hotel. The staff were all friendly and helpful. This is a premium experience in every regard. The route to get to the park takes you through a residential area, but fear not the signs will lead you to the entrance. We had full LTE cell service (AT&T) and the wi-fi was good also. We would definitely stay here again and would look to get a waterfront site. We stayed one night in site #92, a pull thru site with full hook ups. We camped at Catherine's Landing in a Travel Trailer.

Nolin Lake State Park, Bee Spring, Kentucky

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed 2 nights in site #25, an easy back-in site with W/E right on the water. This park is far enough off the beaten path that I would not recommend it for a one night stop if passing thru on the interstate. We were there to visit Mammoth Cave NP so it worked out for us---although please note that the entrance to the national park is all the way around on the southeast portion of the NP so plan 45 minutes to get there. Stop at the campground attendant booth to get a map with the best route to the visitor's center---do NOT go by google maps. We had no cell service but did pick up 2 OTA TV channels. The bath houses were just okay. This is a pretty park with very nice sites right on the water. We would recommend this as a relaxing getaway. We camped at Nolin Lake State Park in a Travel Trailer.

The bank fishing looks good, but couldn't get any bites. The park ranger told me that you need a boat to get where you can catch much.

We stayed 2 nights in site #605, a back-in site with W/E/S/C. Very easy in and out. This is a tidy campground with good attention to detail. The bathhouse was nice and close to our campsite. Four Mile Creek State Park, Youngstown, New York

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed 2 nights in site #232 a back-in site with E/W hook ups. This is a very spacious, grassy site which backs up to the lake, but the bushes are quite grown up so you don't get much of a view. Also, the water connection is 50-60 feet away, so we used water from our tanks. Check on this before you unhook. We only had Canadian cell service at our site, but if we went to the front check-in area we could get US 4G service (AT&T). The hot water didn't work at one shower but did at the next one I tried. Overall, this park was fine but not spectacular for visiting the Niagra Falls area which is about 20-30 mins away. We camped at Four Mile Creek State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Rollins Pond Campground, Saranac Lake, New York

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

This is NOT a campground for anything but the smallest trailers or pop ups or tents. If you do not have first hand knowledge of the layout of your site, I would not stay here. This was by far the tightest spot I've ever had to get into: narrow road with huge rocks in front then I had to weave the trailer through 4 narrow trees to get into the site. This was with a 31' travel trailer that the website says could be accommodated. The campground itself is scenic, right on the beautiful lake. But this place is really meant for tent campers and small rigs. You have to go through Fish Pond CG for 2+ miles before you get to Rollins Pond CG. Fish Pond was designed for trailers and nearly all the sites are on the water. I would stay there instead. We stayed 2 nights in sight #247, a back-in site with no hook ups. The pristine lake was only 10 paces away from the trailer. It is great for canoeing or kayaking, which you can rent and they will deliver to your site. We had very limited cell service (4G AT&T) and no wi-fi. The bath house had no hot water. We camped at Rollins Pond Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Lake Champagne Campground, Randolph Center, Vermont

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $42.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed in site #A8, a pull-thru with W/E/S/C. This site was just okay; there are ones with better views closer to the lake. Ours was all grass and very soft from recent rains, which we didn't care for. Their wi-fi was good and we had full LTE cell service (AT&T). There is a nice clear lake for swimming and fishing. The campground was fine, but to be honest, this is not at all a resort (listed in the official name) and the lake is small and sort of an afterthought. We were a little disappointed. We camped at Lake Champagne Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Fransted Family Campground, Franconia, New Hampshire

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $51.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed 2 nights in site #T8, a pull thru with W/E/S/C. They are indeed very stringent with the rules. This is a very neat and pretty campground with large grassy areas for the kids to play. The hook ups for our site were arranged a little oddly, but doable with extensions for the sewer and water hoses. There is a nice mountain stream perfect for relaxing in or for the kids to do some gentle tubing in. Their wi-fi was fine and we had full LTE cell service with AT&T. We camped at Fransted Family Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Blackwoods Campground (NPS Campground), Acadia National Park, Maine

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed 4 nights in site #A80, pull-thru site with no hookups that's fairly tight to get into, but doable. There is a bathroom a short walk away (toilets and sink but no showers). Pay showers are available 5 minutes away outside the park. They were just okay. The campground itself is right off the main road and convenient to all that the island offers. It is clean, very woodsy, and the shuttles stop in the campground. We had full LTE (AT&T). If you can get by with no hookups, this is a good, centrally located, inexpensive place to stay.
