Foothills Motel and Campground, Dayton, Wyoming

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $21.00
Overall Rating:

It is always sad to see a park that has so much potential, and fails to deliver in almost every way. This is a spacious park bordering the Tongue River on the north side, a city park on the east side, and is one block from the small downtown area. It is less than 10 miles to the national forest and great hiking and fishing. The owners are a nice couple who have owned the park for 40+ years. However, they have failed to maintain what was probably a nice little park 70 years ago. For example, the laundry building had eight washers and three dryers - two of the washers worked and one of the dryers. The windows in the sides of the building were so dirty you could not see out of them. The walls had not been painted in probably 20 years. None of the buildings looked like they had been repaired or remodeled for decades. The owners appear to be hoarders; there was stuff (junk?) stacked or laying everywhere. No attempt had been made to put down gravel and create level parking pads; you just parked on the grass near the hookups. Roads in the park appear to have had gravel put down many years ago, but were now essentially dirt. Pictures will be posted so you can see the conditions throughout the park for yourself. Obviously, the price is very reasonable; a number of the people staying here were contractors working in the area. We camped at Foothills Motel and Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Hart Ranch Camping Resort, Rapid City, South Dakota

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

This is a huge park with over 400 parking pads, all neatly laid out in rows and blocks. Pad size was adequate. They warn you not to hang your trailer over the edge of the pad because it interferes with the mowing. Lots of foot and vehicle traffic. Lots of amenities. Water pressure was good. I was told the WIFI had been hit by lightening and they were waiting for a part. I left five days after it went down and it was still not working properly. We camped at Hart Ranch Camping Resort in a Travel Trailer.

I went on a sales visit. At the sales meeting I was told that because I had stayed at the park on a sales visit, I was required to sign a form acknowledging I would be assessed an additional $500 transfer fee if I bought a membership from anyone other than the park itself (an owner or reseller).

Fort Robinson State Park, Crawford, Nebraska

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

There are two separate campgrounds. Both are fairly shaded. Water pressure is good. There is no WIFI signal at the campgrounds, but I got a strong signal on my Verizon phone and hot spot device. Full hookups are available, but the demand is high on the weekends during the summer. The park has a policy of not accepting reservations in advance for half of their full hookup spots. However, they will allow you to call the day you are going to arrive and make a reservation, so if you can't get a reservation in advance, get on the phone at 8:00 am of the day you are going to arrive and get a reservation. I called on Thursday morning and got a reservation for five days and stayed through the weekend when there were no reservations available for the weekend. Go figure! We camped at Fort Robinson State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Double Nickel Campground, Waco, Nebraska

Date of Stay: June, 2016 - $39.00
Overall Rating:

Easy access to and from the Interstate. Lots of trees. Area very clean; they pick up trash every morning outside your RV. Pads are little more than ruts with some gravel; mine was far from level. Staff out working during the day; nice people. We camped at Double Nickel Campground in a Travel Trailer.

AOK Campground and RV Park, Saint Joseph, Missouri

Date of Stay: June, 2016 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Just stayed one night. Access from Interstate is easy; gravel road is not a problem. Park was pleasant, with spacious areas. Park is not far from freeway (you make a U driving from the exit to the park and end up alongside the freeway); the noise distracted from the pretty area. Staff very friendly. We camped at AOK Campground and RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Autumn Falls Park (55+ park), Independence, Missouri

Date of Stay: May, 2016 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

If you are planning to attend a baseball game or football game in Kansas City this is a great place to stay. It is only a few miles from the stadiums. This is clearly an older trailer court; when was the last time you saw overhead power lines in an RV park? The owner is a really nice guy who was very helpful. He said he is getting rid of the trailer houses and renting the pads to RV owners. However, the RV's in the park were skirted or appeared to have been there for a while. Not sure this is a great place for mobile RV owners. Be aware; there are no showers, bathrooms, laundry facilities, or cable television. It is a place to park and nothing more. Wifi was a little slow. However, it is very clean. Water pressure was fine. I was parked near the front and the street noise was annoying; the street is a four lane road that carries a lot of traffic. A bit expensive for the services provided. I paid $30 a night on a weekly rate. We camped at Autumn Falls Park (55+ park) in a Travel Trailer.

Cloud Nine Park, Hot Springs, Arkansas

Date of Stay: May, 2016 - $22.00
Overall Rating:

Okay, the road in from the highway is steep and has sharp turns. And, there are potholes at a couple of the corners that are stressful. Go slow and drive carefully; the road is no reason to bypass this park. There are more than enough pluses to compensate: a good price, mature shade trees, a forest setting, $1.50 laundry machines, a huge clubhouse, free wifi, and great service. If you need a pull-through they have them, but consider one of the back-in slots; they have more privacy and the park is bordered by a forest. I have been on the road for six months, and this is probably the most peaceful setting I have encountered. The woman who manages the park is great, and calls to the park forward to her cell phone so she is available if something is needed. We camped at Cloud Nine Park in a Travel Trailer.

River View RV Park & Resort, Vidalia, Louisiana

Date of Stay: May, 2016 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

This is the first RV park I have stayed at where they tell you "just put your trash out at the end of your RV by 9:00 am and we will pick it up." Wifi was excellent, and included in the price. Views of the river and the barge traffic were great. Laundry was not so great; three washers for a huge park, and the price was $2.50 a load. Almost at the foot of the bridge so access across the river to Natchez is quick and easy. Enjoyed it here, but not sure the price is justified. We camped at River View RV Park & Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Aviation Arbor RV Park (Military FamCamp), NAS JRB New Orleans, Louisiana

Date of Stay: May, 2016 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

The staff here were very friendly, but the camp is no great prize. The pads sit in two long rows and the road is an oval around the outside. There is not so much as one tree or shrub to provide shade or cut the glare of the sun. I was there the first week of May and the heat and humidity were already becoming oppressive. The camp has 40 RV pads, but the laundry facility has three washing machines. The only dumpster is just outside the entrance to the campground, so you have to dump your trash as you come and go from the campground. Building an RV camp is not cheap; it is sad when planners spend what has to be spent for the basics, and then skimp on the little things that make the difference between a sterile set of concrete pads and a place that one remembers as a great place to vacation. We camped at Aviation Arbor RV Park (Military FamCamp) in a Travel Trailer.

Oak Grove Park (Military FamCamp), Pensacola, Florida

Date of Stay: April, 2016 - $23.00
Overall Rating:

This RV park is centrally located, a couple miles inside the back gate of the Naval Air Station. It has full hook-ups with huge concrete pads. It uses the Navy's "Go Wifi" system which is free if you quality. Many of the people who were in the park were regulars who spend time every year at this park. On one of the Saturday nights I was there, they had a pot luck dinner; thirty people showed up. Laundry facilities were excellent. There is a beautiful beach 75 yards from the campground. Reservations are strongly recommended; the camp stays full. We camped at Oak Grove Park (Military FamCamp) in a Travel Trailer.

Blue Angel Naval Recreation Area (Military FamCamp), Pensacola, Florida

Date of Stay: April, 2016 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

This is really two campgrounds. Blue Angel Naval Recreation Area is several square miles in size with a primitive area, hiking trails, boat ramp, paintball area and two campgrounds that are a mile apart. One is called Anchor Cove and the other is called Battleship Row. Many of the reviews apply to Battleship Row, which has 75 huge concrete pads, full hookups and wonderful amenities. Anchor Cove is a much more primitive area with 83 dirt pads, water and electricity. Battleship Row has two laundry facilities; Anchor Cove has none (they will tell you it is okay to use a laundry facility a mile away in another part of the park). Reservations can be made for either, so be sure which you have a reservation for if you book in advance. Battleship Row is a wonderful facility and it fills up fast. There is no Wifi anywhere; they said a contract is working its way though the government purchasing system to hire a contractor to construct a new system for the park. We camped at Blue Angel Naval Recreation Area (Military FamCamp) in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Cub's Crawfish has good food and it is close by. Warning; it is little more than a shack with a few picnic tables. I don't eat crawfish, but loved the boiled shrimp and red beans and rice. If you get tired of burgers, it is a great place to pick up some take out.

Hidden Lake RV Resort, Beaumont, Texas

Date of Stay: March, 2016 - $34.00
Overall Rating:

The price is high and not a bargain. Practically speaking, there are two parks separated by a canal. The pads along the water looked like people were there for extend stays, so don't expect to just wander in and get a spot next to the water. Park is very clean and neat, and every pad has a small grassed area next to it. Laundry facilities are great; washers are $1.25 and dryers are $1.00. Everything was very clean. There is some freeway noise; far noisier are the railroad track that run along the side of the park opposite of the freeway. Aside from the pond, there is nothing here in the way of entertainment; it I would not call it a resort. I was here a week and was ready to leave after five days. While Wifi is free, beware! They tell you at check-in you are not allowed to stream video; the system cannot handle it. The $34 was based on a weekly rate. We camped at Hidden Lake RV Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Shields Park NAS Recreation Area (Military FamCamp), Corpus Christi Naval Air Station, Texas

Date of Stay: February, 2016 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

This park has two campground areas; both are close to the water. The week I was there the wind blew every day; I'd put my awning out in the am for a little shade, and close it up by mid-day when the wind picked up. The campgrounds have no trees, so the wind off the bay was strong. Laundry was free, as was Wifi (using Navy Go-Wifi). A real bargain, but Spartan. Marathon Motel and RV Park, Marathon, Texas

Date of Stay: February, 2016 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

I enjoy staying in places that are a little off the beaten path. This RV park is on the road to Big Bend National Park. Marathon is a tiny town, so be prepared for limited shopping, etc. The Marathon Motel and RV Park is an interesting place. Check out the pictures that are posted. It has a very pretty courtyard area. The cabins look well maintained, as does the park in general. Someone built this place with love and thoughtfulness. Unfortunately, the RV area appears to be an afterthought and is a little less attractive. Again, check out the pictures. They simply pulled utilities out into an adjacent field, and graveled it. The pads are not all that level. The wifi works fine. The listed rates are $35 a night or $140 for a week. So, it is definitely cheaper to stay for a while. The $20 rate is based on a one week stay. We camped at Marathon Motel and RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Sunny Acres RV Park (55+ park), Las Cruces, New Mexico

Date of Stay: February, 2016 - $23.00
Overall Rating:

This is a park in an older part of town, but clean and neat. I was here on Super Bowl Sunday and the staff hosted a party for the game. I found the staff and the guests friendly and enjoyed meeting them. They also have a storage area if you need to leave your RV for a few days or weeks. There is easy access to the freeway, and plenty of local shopping. My daily fee was based on a weekly rate. We camped at Sunny Acres RV Park (55+ park) in a Travel Trailer.
