Red Rock Canyon State Park, Hinton, Oklahoma

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $23.00
Overall Rating:

The park sits in a canyon about 100 feet below the landscape level. It literally disappears into the ground. The road down to it is incredibly steep and windy, but short. They don't take reservations but if you can get them on the phone they will tell you what is available. The office was closed when we got in at 2pm. When you get in just choose a site and fill out an envelope, put your check or cash in it and drop it in one of several drop boxes through out the park. Incredibly simple. Our site had a view of very close vertical sandstone walls and a bubbling brook ran beside us. We camped at Red Rock Canyon State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Little Rock AFB FamCamp (Military FamCamp), Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

This was our second stay in four years. It was almost full when we arrived and we couldn't get the nice pull-throughs on the back side that we had before. The host, a very helpful gentleman, met us and recommended spot 8, as it was level and we didn't want to unhitch. When we got there I saw that the person on spot 7 had plugged into spot 8's 30 amp. The pedestals are dual sided and his 30 amp was defective. I was lucky I had an adapter. (Or maybe he was lucky I had an adapter). I connected to the 50 with it. In the morning I opened the black tank valve and turned away to do something else. The sewer overflowed and blew the dump hose out, spilling sewage all over the ground. It was an awful mess cleaning it as best I could. We pulled out to the dump station to finish the clean-out and I left a note about the disaster in the camp hosts mail drop. If I evaluated this park on the basis of my experience on spot 8 it would get 1 star, but I know the newer part of the park is nice. Also I saw construction where there are expanding. Use the Arnold Street gate. They quit letting RVs use the west gate. We camped at Little Rock AFB FamCamp (Military FamCamp) in a Travel Trailer.

Ashley Lane RV Park, Enid, Oklahoma

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Ashley Lane is vastly improved since our last visit four years ago. Most of the residents are still long-termers but the RVs are, for the most part, late model, clean and well kept. There are still a scattering of mobile homes in the park but they also are well kept with underskirts. I would come back. My only complaint is that the pads are 90 degrees to the roadways with vehicles across the way, making backing in a bit dicey. We camped at Ashley Lane RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Caprock Canyons State Park, Quitaque, Texas

Date of Stay: March, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

We called on the fly while driving up from Big Bend and reserved two nights. The office said they had only one space left (didn't say which) and would tape our site number and pass to the door since we were coming in late. Didn't happen. We drove through and saw many open spaces, and chose one. It was very private with great spacing and vegetation separating sites. In the morning a park ranger stopped and gave us our vehicle pass. He said no need to go to the park office. After a hike that afternoon another park ranger stopped us and asked why we had not checked in at the office. He was unmoved by my explanation of what the guy had told me that morning. At the office I was mildly chastised for not coming in and the explanation carried no sway with the lady. Seemed like a whole lot of unnecessary confusion. Still, it is a great park and the hiking is absolutely fantastic. Watch out for the buffalo. They roam everywhere and think they own the roads. We camped at Caprock Canyons State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Marathon Motel and RV Park, Marathon, Texas

Date of Stay: March, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

We used this park as a base camp for day trips down to Big Bend National Park. We were very pleased with it. It is on dirt and gravel, no grass, but this after all is a desert. None-the-less, it is clean, well appointed and landscaped. We camped at Marathon Motel and RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

When you reserve, ask for a site in the back area away from the highway. Much quieter. Also there are some trees separating the spaces in the back area. There are observatories and telescope pads with electric hook-ups near the RV area. Be careful about opening RV doors at night with bright lights on inside. Most people roaming the grounds at night used red lens flashlights. For dining, try the restaurant at the Gage Hotel down the street. Pricey but excellent.

Elliot Lake Recreation Area (Military FamCamp), Texarkana, Texas

Date of Stay: March, 2018 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

We were in only for one night and didn't unhitch. Out site was level enough to accommodate that, but many others would have required unhitching due to the slope. The new section, the first loop to the left, is where we were and is excellent. The older loops are poorly planned with pull-through accommodating two campers each and utilities split on each side.

Don't use your GPS to get here. It may take you to a closed gate. Follow directions on the website. I got asked if I had a weapon or ammo by the main gate guard. Be prepared for that if you carry. The lake is beautiful. We camped at Elliot Lake Recreation Area (Military FamCamp) in a Travel Trailer.

Davis Lake Campground, Houlka, Mississippi

Date of Stay: March, 2018 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

We were passing through and only needed a spot for the night. We would have been glad for anything. But this turned out to be a pleasant surprise. It is clean, shady, space and very well appointed. Even the dump station is landscaped. The restroom house was immaculate. Our site was next to the lake with a great view and was level. The place was abundantly peaceful, but it was a weekday and few were there. We camped at Davis Lake Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Moundville Archaeological Park, Moundville, Alabama

Date of Stay: January, 2018 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

No reservations taken here. They say it stays mostly open but some weekend events can fill it up. Call ahead. They will tell you to go pick a spot and call it in. Pay close attention to the camp map. The sites with full hookups are 50 amp only. I didnt pay attention after completely setting up and making that discovery. Leveling necessary on nearly every site up to as much as 3 and 4 inches. Lost of shade and openness. You have to pay for a day (1 day) pass even with the camp fee. You have complete freedom of the archeological park all night even after closing to the public if you want to commune with the ancient spirits. The museum is excellent. We camped at Moundville Archaeological Park in a Travel Trailer.

Lake Poinsett State Park, Harrisburg, Arkansas

Date of Stay: October, 2017 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed one night while passing through. The site was perfectly level despite being gravel and in a hilly area. Backing in was easy. The park was well maintained and clean. The lake was drained for maintenance and we were told it would remain so until after 2020. We were pleasantly surprised by the small, remote park's quality. We camped at Lake Poinsett State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Fairhaven RV Park, Enid, Oklahoma

Date of Stay: October, 2017 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

Enid, OK has no RV park that is "traveler's quality." This one is far from it due to the number of permanent residents and old, dilapidated RV units. But the hook-ups worked. The one person I met was a park bum, but was friendly.

The park is unsightly but is undergoing renovation to get it cleaned up of debris and get a privacy fence installed around it. You don't have much choice in this town. We camped at Fairhaven RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Mill Creek COE, Lampe, Missouri

Date of Stay: October, 2017 - $10.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed 3 nights at spot 49, a pull-through. It was level, clean and shaded with good separation from adjacent sites. The feature that makes this pull-through and the others I saw is the utilities that are on the inside of the pull-through (between the pull-through and the campground access road). This makes it easy to put the front of the unit toward the lake. However because the site is on a narrow peninsula we had good lake views out both sides. We camped at Mill Creek COE in a Travel Trailer.

Miller's Ferry Campground COE, Camden, Alabama

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $12.00
Overall Rating:

We only stayed one night. We had a beautiful water front site that was concrete and perfectly level. We didn't even have to unhitch. The wooden deck was in perfect condition. The grass was well mowed. The gate hosts were helpful. The COE knows how to build camp grounds. We camped at Miller's Ferry Campground COE in a Travel Trailer.

Oak Grove Park (Military FamCamp), Pensacola, Florida

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $27.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed a week here on spot 50, which is one of the 6 "premium" sites that are the closest to the beach. The pad was recent concrete and level. All hook-ups worked except the cable TV. The camp host said I was the first to report a problem with it. We stayed too busy too watch it anyway. The premium sites are terribly hot with little shade and a summer sun that tracks over in a way that your awning doesn't do much good.

The interior roads are very rough, even to walk on. The path and boardwalk to the beach is short and well maintained. The beach is the same beautiful white sand that is out on the Gulf Beach fronts. The water in the sound can be dingy and trashy after big rains, and during our stay it was badly stained with tannin acid from pine forest run-off.

The camp host was excellent. The facilities great. It is a 2 minute drive or a 10 minute walk to the Naval Aviation Museum. The major complaint by all campers here is that no swimming is allowed because there is no lifeguard. This is totally idiotic. Consequently we spent most of our beach time on Santa Rosa Island across the Sound and a 20 minute drive out the west gate.

During the week I grew tired of the Navy rules requiring ID cards flashed every way you turn, boat and equipment rental rules that required turn-in at 3pm and the perpetual "No Pets" and "No Swimming" signs posted everywhere. (Your dog is allowed in the camp ground.) We camped at Oak Grove Park (Military FamCamp) in a Travel Trailer.

Lake Martin Recreation Area (Military FamCamp), Dadeville, Alabama

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

I read all the bad reviews. Thought it couldn't be that bad. It is. This campground seems to be a neglected step child among the mostly decent military campgrounds that I have been to. Our pad and the other TT accompying us had to be elevated 5 inches just to be close to level. Our two pads were dirt only. The picnic tables were on ground so unlevel a coffee cup slid off. Our pad required a 100' back-in, downhill, on dirt and pine straw, with a 90 degree turn at the bottom. Next to it is was an array of three TTs sitting at all different angles in a hillside with so much stuff scattered about it looked like a yard sale. If you come here avoid sites 41, 42, 51 and possibly others. Better yet go across the lake to the State Park. We wanted to do that but waited too late for Memorial weekend reservations. Now we know why this place was available. We camped at Lake Martin Recreation Area (Military FamCamp) in a Travel Trailer.
