Miller's Ferry Campground COE, Camden, Alabama

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $12.00
Overall Rating:

We only stayed one night. We had a beautiful water front site that was concrete and perfectly level. We didn't even have to unhitch. The wooden deck was in perfect condition. The grass was well mowed. The gate hosts were helpful. The COE knows how to build camp grounds. We camped at Miller's Ferry Campground COE in a Travel Trailer.

Oak Grove Park (Military FamCamp), Pensacola, Florida

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $27.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed a week here on spot 50, which is one of the 6 "premium" sites that are the closest to the beach. The pad was recent concrete and level. All hook-ups worked except the cable TV. The camp host said I was the first to report a problem with it. We stayed too busy too watch it anyway. The premium sites are terribly hot with little shade and a summer sun that tracks over in a way that your awning doesn't do much good.

The interior roads are very rough, even to walk on. The path and boardwalk to the beach is short and well maintained. The beach is the same beautiful white sand that is out on the Gulf Beach fronts. The water in the sound can be dingy and trashy after big rains, and during our stay it was badly stained with tannin acid from pine forest run-off.

The camp host was excellent. The facilities great. It is a 2 minute drive or a 10 minute walk to the Naval Aviation Museum. The major complaint by all campers here is that no swimming is allowed because there is no lifeguard. This is totally idiotic. Consequently we spent most of our beach time on Santa Rosa Island across the Sound and a 20 minute drive out the west gate.

During the week I grew tired of the Navy rules requiring ID cards flashed every way you turn, boat and equipment rental rules that required turn-in at 3pm and the perpetual "No Pets" and "No Swimming" signs posted everywhere. (Your dog is allowed in the camp ground.) We camped at Oak Grove Park (Military FamCamp) in a Travel Trailer.

Lake Martin Recreation Area (Military FamCamp), Dadeville, Alabama

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

I read all the bad reviews. Thought it couldn't be that bad. It is. This campground seems to be a neglected step child among the mostly decent military campgrounds that I have been to. Our pad and the other TT accompying us had to be elevated 5 inches just to be close to level. Our two pads were dirt only. The picnic tables were on ground so unlevel a coffee cup slid off. Our pad required a 100' back-in, downhill, on dirt and pine straw, with a 90 degree turn at the bottom. Next to it is was an array of three TTs sitting at all different angles in a hillside with so much stuff scattered about it looked like a yard sale. If you come here avoid sites 41, 42, 51 and possibly others. Better yet go across the lake to the State Park. We wanted to do that but waited too late for Memorial weekend reservations. Now we know why this place was available. We camped at Lake Martin Recreation Area (Military FamCamp) in a Travel Trailer.

Indian Boundary Campground, Tellico Plains, Tennessee

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $10.00
Overall Rating:

Despite this being a hilly park our pad was perfectly level. The bat houses are modern, nicely spaced-out for short walks and the walkways to and from the facilities are concrete. The bath houses were spotless and freshly scented. The view from our front door was straight into a beautiful secluded forest. The sites are far enough apart to fit a site or two in between each one of them. I did not do my homework very well and had set up camp when I realized the sites do not have water hook-ups. But we got lucky. There are threaded water hydrants located throughout the park. We had one within reach of our 50 white hose, so did not have to hitch back up and go for water. If not for the lack of water at the pads, this park would be a 9 or 10. Kudos to USFS. NPS could learn from them. We camped at Indian Boundary Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

The swimming beach is excellent. If you don't like the sound of kids swimming, get a pad farther from the lake. The 3.5 mile hike around the lake is also excellent, especially for lovers of wildflowers and other plant life. We took a side trip on the nearby Cherahola Skyway up to the divide and hiked to the "balds" for stunning views of the Smokies.

Cades Cove Campground (NPS Campground), Townsend, Tennessee

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $10.00
Overall Rating:

We chose the non-generator "C" loop. Our particular site, C-20, was paved with concrete. Our 27' travel trailer fit in the pad but the truck didn't. The pad was just wide enough to park them side by side but it took some finesse to get them both in there. The pads are perpendicular to the street and thus hard to back into. The interior roads were rough. Big rigs best go elsewhere. We loved the metal picnic table and the fire can. We had one of the few concrete pads. Most other sites were best suited for tents or pop-ups. We hardly used the bath house. It had no shower and only one stall. It was clean but the smell was not fresh. We were disappointed that there are no trails in the park that allow dogs on leash. We camped at Cades Cove Campground (NPS Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

Piney Grove COE, New Site, Mississippi

Date of Stay: October, 2016 - $11.00
Overall Rating:

We arrived during a Fall weekday and were told to go pick a spot and return to register. I always love that. (Reservation season had ended.) The park was 90% open. We found one we liked on a loop that no one else was on. Let the dog off lease. The pad was side-to-side level. There was a nice round concrete pedestal table to put our portable grill on. Also there was a lamp stand with hooks, as well as a fire pit. The patio was lined with timbers and filled with limestone gravel. Very clean. We had adequate Verizon coverage. Only TV reception was Alabama Public TV which had a very clear signal. Loved the lake view. We stayed two nights and wanted to stay longer but had to go. We will go back. We camped at Piney Grove COE in a Travel Trailer.

Bama RV Station, Cottondale, Alabama

Date of Stay: October, 2016 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

During football season this park has two sections: one for seasonal tailgaters (you won't get into it if you don't lease it for the season), and one for everyone else. Both are gravel, no trees, no tables. Most of non-tailgater section (where we were) is occupied by people working temporarily in Tuscaloosa and other long-termers. While the tailgater section is angled pull-throughs with more space between units, the other section is tightly packed un-angled pull-throughs with little maneuvering room. The pedestals are shared between spaces, thus you are back-to-back and front-to-front with your neighbours. If you don't like interstate noise this park is good, as it is sufficiently away from I-20. If you don't like train noise, you are out of luck here. There is a very busy track so close you think they're coming through the park. Don't expect any aesthetic satisfaction. The place is hot, dusty and without any pleasant views whatsoever. There are no discounts during football season, even when the team is playing away, and even in the non-tail-gater section. Also there is a $5 "service" charge. On the positive side, the manager was nice, the utilities worked well, and all the RVs and vehicles in the place were clean and modern. No junk. None-the-less, I believe I will select another location on my next visit to Tuscaloosa. We camped at Bama RV Station in a Travel Trailer.

T.H. Stone Memorial St Joseph Peninsula State Park, Port St. Joe, Florida

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

Do not attempt to back in to a spot in the Shady Grove campground at night. The roads are narrow with big trees closely lining them. It's hard to turn while backing without bashing-in your truck fender. Big trees also stand right at the edge of the pads. The pads are walled in by jungle-like vegetation. You can see nothing through it. Air does not circulate through the area. At nights it is incredibly dark and mosquito-infested. We wasted 30 minutes trying to get in safely and gave up. We left and went to the Gulf Breeze campground and found it easier to get in to in the dark, but still infested by mosquitoes. You cannot sit outside your RV. The camp ground is not pretty but the beaches are incredible. We cut our visit short and left to go back inland to a nice lake with open campsites and no Kamikazes. We camped at T.H. Stone Memorial St Joseph Peninsula State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Fishing Bridge Campground (NPS Campground), Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $55.00
Overall Rating:

Despite all the bad reviews I read about this place, I resolved to keep an open mind about it. They were right. This campground, the only one in all of Yellowstone NP with hook-ups: was crowded, dusty, muddy, tight, uneven, unsightly and replete with pot-holes. The roads are so narrow with big trees lining them that you have to be careful to avoid bashing your fender when backing in your rig. The sewer connection is poorly located and elevated such that you cannot achieve a decent gravity fall from your dump valve. I found it useless and had to use the dump station when we left. For being a US government park, it was embarrassing. We were here a week and very thankfully stayed away most of the days touring the park. This over-priced facility (relative to what you get) in a national park will not recognize your senior pass. I would rather have dry-camped in one of the parks' other campgrounds. We camped at Fishing Bridge Campground (NPS Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

Cottonwood Point COE, Marion, Kansas

Date of Stay: June, 2016 - $16.00
Overall Rating:

With COE on the sign you know it will be good. We stayed 4 nights while visiting relatives and going to Concert in the Flint Hills. The place is huge with lots of space between pads and lots of shade trees. Our pad was beside the lake. The only complaint is that a blue-green algae plume had developed in the lake that sickened people and killed dogs. There was a green stain along the shore where the stuff washed up. I was told this was the normal now for lake Marion in the summer. What a pity. We camped at Cottonwood Point COE in a Travel Trailer.

Buckley AFB Famcamp (Military FamCamp), Buckley AFB, Colorado

Date of Stay: June, 2016 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

We came in after hours without a reservation. The camp host's wife pointed out a few open pads to select from. The following morning we registered at the MWR office which is about 3 miles away. The pads are excellent concrete with full hook-ups. No shade. No view. There was an adjacent grassy area where bombing range target vehicles are stored, that was a good place to let my dog run off lease. It was fun watching F-16s take off close by. We camped at Buckley AFB Famcamp (Military FamCamp) in a Travel Trailer.

We arrived at Seminoe without reservations and stayed one night. We had the campground mostly to ourselves and selected a beautiful waterfront pad. Colter Bay Village RV Park -- Full Hookups (Concessionaire Operated) , Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

Date of Stay: June, 2016 - $29.00
Overall Rating:

I asked for a 3-day reservation the day before arrival and was told I could have only 2. I accepted. When we arrived they gave us 3 days. The agent had made a note that I wanted an extra day, and she found one. Great service. We found Colter Bay Village to be a welcome respite after the rat-race of Yellowstone. The sites, while not too level, are shady and quiet, with a 5-minute walk to arguably the most beautiful sight on earth. Lake Jackson and the Grand Tetons. You want to take a chair to the shore and sit for hours. Loved it. We camped at Colter Bay Village RV Park -- Full Hookups (Concessionaire Operated) in a Travel Trailer.
