Sonrise Palms RV Park, Cocoa, Florida

Date of Stay: December, 2017 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

This campground, which is under new ownership, is neat and well-maintained. While we found the free Wifi very good, the new owners promise cable TV and industrial-strength WiFi by Christmas 2017. The staff is very friendly and helpful and bathrooms are immaculately maintained. For visitors arriving after hours or during lunch break, the "overflow area" w/electric hookup is a nice amenity. This park is adjacent to I95, so expect some traffic noise. For us it was acceptable with windows closed. We would definitely stay here again. We camped at Sonrise Palms RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Sumter Oaks RV Park - Escapees Rainbow Park, Bushnell, Florida

Date of Stay: November, 2017 - $12.00
Overall Rating:

The primary reason for our visit was to take advantage of the Smart Weigh program. I was very impressed with the knowledge and thoroughness of the weigh-master. After seven years of RVing, we still learned something new. I recommend this to anyone who is concerned about the weight of their unit. Also, we had a previously scheduled family event at the Florida National Cemetery, which is only two miles west, making Sumter Oaks a convenient stop. To take advantage of discounts, we booked our stay for one month. This old somewhat tired park is in much need of upgrades. On the plus side, it was filled with friendly seasonal residents. There were many potlucks and activities and the resident sandhill cranes provided daily entertainment. On the minus side, there is no cable, no wifi, and most sites are NOT satellite-friendly. Many campsites are tight due to large oak trees and other obstacles. Interior roads are unpaved as are the (dirt) parking pads. Concrete patios are cracked and utilities are positioned helter-skelter or at site rear making electric, water and sewer extensions a must. Although the monthly rate was about the lowest we've seen anywhere, we are reminded of the adage "you get what you pay for." We camped at Sumter Oaks RV Park - Escapees Rainbow Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Van Riper State Park, Champion, Michigan

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

Oh, my! What a beautiful park! On-line reservations were made with ReserveAmerica, so their up-charge is reflected in the rate. Check in was friendly and easy. Our site was ADA, which I did not knowingly request. Perhaps a glitch with RA, or perhaps I wasn't paying attention and clicked through the reservation process. We are only here for an overnight, so no problem according to the ranger. Sites are very roomy - electric only. This campground is very family friendly; satellite-friendly not so much, but our site worked. And - the best for last - FREE WiFi! We are very impressed with Michigan state parks. MI DNR you are three for three. Well done! We camped at Van Riper State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Aune-Osborn Campground, Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

This cg features level grassy sites with a view of St Mary River and passing lake freighters. Drainage is poor, so sites remain quite wet following rain. We even noticed some campers that appeared to be "marooned." Our water connection was almost 100' away, but friendly cg staff loaned us a 50' hose, so all was well. We camped at Aune-Osborn Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Yet another great Michigan State Park. Perfectly situated for hikes to both Lower and Upper Tahquamenon Falls. Our site was not satellite-friendly, and I believe that is the case overall. We camped at Tahquamenon Falls State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Fort Wilkins Historic State Park, Copper Harbor, Michigan

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $27.00
Overall Rating:

This is another family-friendly Michigan State Park. Sites are private, level and spacious. We camped in a 50A pull-thru (one of nine available). Being satellite-friendly was a bonus. Our previous MI state park (Van Riper) offered free WiFi, but that is not the case here. Also, there is no cell service whatsoever, but that is not the park's fault. We camped at Fort Wilkins Historic State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Straits State Park, Saint Ignace, Michigan

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $33.00
Overall Rating:

This is the second of five MI state parks, and we are definitely impressed! Staff was friendly and helpful. Campsites are roomy, grass/gravel and fairly level. Our site was satellite-friendly, which we appreciate. Restrooms and showers are clean and relatively modern. Straits and the previous SP set the bar. We hope the next three maintain this standard. Well done, MI DNR! We camped at Straits State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Whispering Pines RV Resort and Campground, Mancelona, Michigan

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $29.00
Overall Rating:

Absolutely superb! We have stayed at several so-called resorts, but this is the ONLY one that truly lives up to its name. The owner and staff provide over-the-top service: ice, firewood, and mail delivered to your site, as well as daily trash pick up. Sites are grass-covered, level, roomy and satellite-friendly. Apparently, this is a former Christmas tree farm, with many of the trees providing shelter and privacy between sites - a really nice touch. The FREE WiFi worked well. This resort-campground boasts a heated swimming pool, basketball, volleyball, pickleball courts, and a 1.8 mile nature trail. The strictly enforced 5 mph speed limit makes this park very kid friendly. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and absolutely look forward to another visit. We camped at Whispering Pines RV Resort and Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Orchard Beach State Park, Manistee, Michigan

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

This is a very nice, well maintained state park. Spacious sites with table and fire ring. Restrooms and showers are clean, but dated. Few satellite-friendly sites, but ours worked well. Nice hiking trails across the street. There is a beach of sorts less than one mile north on Lakeshore Rd. Weather was quite rainy/blustery during our stay, thus did not have an opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors as much as we wanted, but we would definitely return. We compliment MI DNR on a job well done! We camped at Orchard Beach State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Sunny's Campground, Wauseon, Ohio

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $36.00
Overall Rating:

This is a mega-park with 800 campsites -- the vast majority being seasonal. The park is clean, neat, and well maintained. Transient sites are in the open and satellite-friendly. $33 per day buys you a back-in with 30A and water. Dump station (free), or pump-out ($8 fee) are available. Campground charges an additional $2.50 per day if you intend to use your air conditioner. WiFi is available for ~$3 per day. It worked fairly well. There is no AT&T service within the campground, but we are told Verizon works fine. We would stay here again. We camped at Sunny's Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Monroe Co. / Toledo North KOA, Petersburg, Michigan

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $50.00
Overall Rating:

Friendly, helpful staff. This campground is obviously geared to families with children. If you are a senior with no desire to participate in hayrides or the "free" pancake breakfast, be sure to request NO resort fee when you make reservations. Few satellite-friendly sites, although cable TV is included on many sites. Would stay again as it is the only campground near family and friends in Toledo. Camp Carlson Army Recreational Area (Military FamCamp), Muldraugh, Kentucky

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $22.00
Overall Rating:

This is a peaceful, quiet campground located not far from the main Ft Knox base. Grounds and bathhouse were beautifully and meticulously maintained. There is a lovely hiking trail to the nearby lake where one can fish as well. There appeared to be many long-term campers, with semi-permanent fixtures, but no visible sign of occupancy. Such "homesteaders" make it difficult for those who simply wish to visit the area for a few days. The free WiFi was poor at best, and there was NO AT&T wireless coverage, which we understand is not the campground's fault. In our situation, we expect to be connected 24x7, so were grateful when we moved out of the gully after four days. Considering the wireless and Internet situation, we will likely not stay here again. We camped at Camp Carlson Army Recreational Area (Military FamCamp) in a Fifth Wheel.
