Buckhorn Lake Resort, Kerrville, Texas

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $48.00
Overall Rating:

Buckhorn Lake Resort is a nice facility and offers different accommodations. There is an exclusive owners' only section in the back, a lakeside section with an adults only pool and the front section which is near I-10. We called in a reservation for the night on our way east into Texas. When we arrived, we realized they were going to put in the front section. We were concerned about the highway noise and had them move us to the lakeside section, which was an additional $5 per night. The site was good. Concrete pad that was very level and with ample space. The sites are set up in alternating directions, so your rig shares a picnic area with the next rig rather than staring at their hookup area. It was a nice setup. Our site was on a loop and the turn was so tight we had to unhook our tow and backup to get into the pull-through site. Fortunately there was an empty site that allowed us to do that. Given that they claim to be set up for big rigs, I was surprised by the tight turn. Overall, we had a nice quiet stay with no other issues. We camped at Buckhorn Lake Resort in a Motorhome.

Davis Mountains State Park, Fort Davis, Texas

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

This is a wonderful state park. Nestled in the Davis Mountains, you will enjoy cool mountain air, gorgeous views, access to wonderful hikes and mountain roads. We have a 44' motorhome and had no problem navigating to our site and getting level, but we were in the lower area (sites 1-17) which seemed more level. Water pressure is high, so use a regulator. There is an additional charge for state park access fees.

If you are in a Motorhome longer than 40', try to reserve the lower section. (sites 1-17). The other sections are hillside and do not appear very level. We saw several MH's with wheels off the ground in the higher campsites. We camped at Davis Mountains State Park in a Motorhome.

Hacienda RV Resort, Las Cruces, New Mexico

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $46.00
Overall Rating:

This is a very nice park. The sites are immaculate and spacious, with swept gravel. The roads are all concrete, with ample room for big rigs to maneuver. The location is very convenient. They are next door to a Holiday World and very close to Walmart and many restaurants. The staff is very friendly and the park provides discounts for several restaurants in the area. Curbside garbage pickup is a nice touch. The hot tub is very nice, but would be even better if there were also a pool. We will definitely return. We camped at Hacienda RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Tucson / Lazydays KOA, Tucson, Arizona

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $31.00
Overall Rating:

This park sets a high standard for all parks, especially the KOA brand. It is one of the nicest KOA's I have ever seen. The roads and sites are all concrete, very wide and big-rig friendly. Each site has an adjacent place for a car, even though the site are long enough to accomodate the car behind the rig. They have covered sites available that use solar panels to provide cover and generate energy. What a great concept! There are two pools and two hot tubs. Both are very nice and one has a playground beside the pool area. The facilities are pristine and the grounds are very clean. Curbside trash pickup is a plus. We arrived after hours and were very happy to be greeted at the gated entrance by 24-hour security. The location is really nice. It is close to lots of restaurants and shopping options and is right off the freeway, but we did not hear any road noise. It is also close to the airport, but we only heard the sound of planes mid-day, never in the late evenings. They are right next to an RV sales and repair service, which is very handy if you need something special for your RV. We camped at Tucson / Lazydays KOA in a Motorhome.

Grand Canyon Railway RV Park, Williams, Arizona

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $47.00
Overall Rating:

A nice park that is clean, big-rig friendly. The roads are asphalt and the sites are spacious. The only issue we had was with the slope of the sites. We were able to level after multiple tries using blocks on the front of our rig, but felt the park could have done a better job leveling the sites. We spoke with other folks in 40+' motorhomes and they were all dealing with the same issue. The location is great. It is just a two-block walk from the Route 66 shopping area and right next door to the Hotel and Raliway. The hotel has an indoor pool and hot tub that is a nice size and a short 5 minute walk from the park. The sound of trains does come through the park, but it never disturbed our sleep. We camped at Grand Canyon Railway RV Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Convenient to Williams and the Grand Canyon Railway. The railway is a fun way to see the Grand Canyon without worrying about the drive and if that is part of your plans, staying in this park is definitely convenient.

Black Bart's RV Park, Flagstaff, Arizona

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

This park has so much potential, but is sadly under-developed. Location: Very convenient to all Flagstaff shops, restaurants and the highway. But, there is LOTS of road noise in the park. We had to run our fans at night to drown it out. Overall site: Beautiful. Surrounded by pine trees, the park setting is really pretty and provides some lovely sunsets. Service: Excellent. The lady that runs the place goes the extra mile to satisfy her customers. If not for her efforts, we probably would have pulled up and left. Sites: Awful, just awful. All sites are gravel and sloped. The back (lower) section of the park is so sloped we could not level our big rig. When we complained, we were moved to the front section, which is also gravel, but slightly less sloped and we were able to level off. All sites are set up for "double parking" with the first arriver pulling through and the second one backing in. It is awkward. Packing the sites like that limits the space available for parking and the roads can get very crowded. The picnic table areas are padded with dirt but no grass, so at the first drop of rain, you have a mud hole right outside of your door. Roads: Poor condition. You have to drive very slowly and when it is crowded, there is limited space to maneuver. Organization: Strange. They put tent campers anywhere, rather than group them together. There is also a large number of full-timers and they are spread throughout the park, rather than grouped in a section. Their sites are very unkempt and are not a good representation of how nice this park could be. Overall, it is probably a decent park for trailers, 5th wheels and shorter motorhomes that can easily level off. For longer rigs like ours (44') the unlevel sites combined with the other park issues make this an undesirable park. We camped at Black Bart's RV Park in a Motorhome.

Route 66 RV Resort, Albuquerque, New Mexico

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

We like to stay in casino RV parks for overnight stops on long trips in our motorhome. They are usually no-frills parks (mostly parking lots), convenient to the highway, with onsite restaurants, good access to diesel and good security. This park was a total surprise! This is a fully developed RV park, with big-rig friendly asphalt roads, concrete pads, spacious landscaped sites, picnic tables, fire pits, a very nice clubhouse, pickle ball court and an excellent pool/hot tub area with beautiful views of the mountain range south of Abuqueque. It is right off of I40, but the RV park is behind the casino and very quiet. They run a shuttle with door-to-door service to the casino and a couple of local attractions, but it is also a pleasant walk to the casino. There are several good restaurants inside. We camped at Route 66 RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Carlsbad KOA, Carlsbad, New Mexico

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $54.00
Overall Rating:

This is the best KOA we have been to. The sites are very wide and long, the neighbors are a fair distance away, the roads are wide and easy to navigate (very big rig friendly), the staff is very friendly and quick to offer trips about local attractions, they have an on-site BBQ take-out that delivers right to your door AND the location is excellent. The park is located about 10 miles north of Carlsbad, which was perfect for us - close enough to all the local attractions for an easy drive, but far enough to enjoy the New Mexico outdoors outside of city limits. It is about 1/2 mile off of 285, and extremely quiet. This is New Mexico, so there is lots of gravel and dust and no shady spots. However, the park has nice landscaping and offers various options with additional features, like swings, covered tables, fire pits, etc. There is a small pool and a nice playground. We did not use the laundry or restroom facilities or the wifi. We camped at Carlsbad KOA in a Motorhome.

Hilltop RV Park, Fort Stockton, Texas

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $27.00
Overall Rating:

Access to the park was very easy, location was exactly as described on the website. The park is close to I10 but there was absolutely no road noise. We had no problems leveling our rig and our site was wide and long. We have a big rig with a tow and had no problem navigating through the park. Our site was at the back of the park and had a nice view from the "hill". Of course, it's a small hill. This is West Texas, so everything is gravel. But even after a fairly wet thunderstorm, the wet gravel stuck together and there were no big wet spots near our site or on the road leading out of the park. The location was convenient to the highway and only a couple of miles from restaurants and shops in Fort Stockton. It is a no-frills park and is the perfect place for an overnight stay. We will return. We camped at Hilltop RV Park in a Motorhome.

Coffee Creek RV Resort, Santo, Texas

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

Excellent RV park if you are looking for peace and quiet away from the city. Roads are gravel and with adequate room to navigate our large rig. The sites are gravel and just a bit on the narrow side, but we were able to level off easily. Although the site gravel is narrow, the actual space between the sites is spacious. The pool and hot tub are excellent. We will stay here again! We camped at Coffee Creek RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Oasis RV Resort, Amarillo, Texas

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

I rarely give a 10, but this park merits the highest rating. Location is convenient to the highway and a truck stop, but far enough from both that there is no road noise. The staff are friendly and efficient. The facilities are pristine - concrete pads that almost require no leveling, ample space for big rigs to navigate and park and a beautiful pool and hot tub. We will definitely stay here again. We camped at Oasis RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Stagecoach Stop RV Resort, Rio Rancho, New Mexico

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $50.00
Overall Rating:

We booked our stay here expecting a big rig friendly park and were extremely disappointed. The park is clean and concrete with nice shrubbery all around, but the roads are way too tight to accommodate large rigs with or without toads. There are large trees placed on corners that make it extremely difficult to navigate the roads in the park. There were only a few sites that would accommodate larger rigs. The pull-though site we were given was so tight we had to back out to exit the park and there a number of other larger rigs placed in sites that were clearly too tight. They clearly did not design this park with larger rigs in mind. If you are driving anything longer that 40 feet, you should approach this park with caution. We camped at Stagecoach Stop RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Alpen Rose RV Park, Durango, Colorado

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $49.00
Overall Rating:

This is a great park to use as a base when visiting all the attractions in the area. They are big rig friendly and easily accommodated our 44' MH and toad. The sites are gravel and maintained with various parts of the park having lots of shade or none, depending on your preference. There is a dog park and a dog wash. We did not use the laundry facilities but they appeared to be nice. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The office is stocked with tourist pamphlets and basic supplies and also offers free popcorn. They make their own pizza on site which is delicious and a nice option if you want to eat in and not cook. The only negatives are the poor wifi and the pool / no hot tub. Be prepared to use your own wifi or do without. The pool is tiny and they really should add a hot tub. We camped at Alpen Rose RV Park in a Motorhome.

Albuquerque North / Bernalillo KOA, Bernalillo, New Mexico

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $43.00
Overall Rating:

The location is good, close to the highway with limited noise. The roads inside the park are a bit tight for a larger rig. We drive a 44 foot motorhome with a toad and there were several turns that were quite tight. To make it worse, there are large rocks on the roads that make the turns tighter. Otherwise, it was a good overnight stay. Gravel roads and sites, but no problems leveling up. We camped at Albuquerque North / Bernalillo KOA in a Motorhome.

Bar J Hitchin Post RV, Sweetwater, Texas

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $36.00
Overall Rating:

This is a no-frills park. It is located across the street from a large truck stop, which is very convenient after a long day's drive. Gravel roads, plenty of room for big rigs to maneuver. We arrived after hours and our information was posted on the board. We went to the site, leveled up, hooked up, no problem. There was a bit of highway noise, but with our A/C on, we did not really notice it after we settled in for the night. This is a good spot for an quick overnight stay when all you really want is a level site and a safe place to spend the night. We camped at Bar J Hitchin Post RV in a Motorhome.
