About Enjoying_Retirement

Retired couple in our 50's wanting to see as much of the US as we can, via Lance 1172 truck camper carried by a 2013 Chev 3500 dually diesel. Our first trip in Sept 2015-11 states! 2016 - 17 states, 2017 - 6 news states, (traveled thru 12 states). We don't expect any more than a clean, well-kept campground that is a fair value for the price.

Cape Lookout State Park, Tillamook, Oregon

Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $31.00
Overall Rating:

We were on Site D02 and then had to move to C47. DO2 loop sites are close together but have privacy because of the landscaping. Asphalt where you park which is very narrow and then surrounded by grass. C47 loop is all shaded because of tree cover, so no grass, it's dirt, and when it rains, wet dirt. Site was less private because of less of ground bushes Park is very woody, nice. No air TV. Close walk to beautiful ocean. Bathrooms and showers are okay. We camped at Cape Lookout State Park in a Truck Camper.

Tips for other Campers:

Seems like you are driving and driving after leaving town, but it is marked and you'll get there! Beach is close. Town is okay, but a visit to Tillimook Cheese is a must! Cheese and Ice Cream.

AB Camping & RV Park, Cheyenne, Wyoming

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $46.00
Overall Rating:

1st site S18 would not work b/c utilities were on wrong side for dropping camper and pulling out. Very courteous in moving us. 2nd site M18, said it was a concrete pad but it was only concrete runners. Our dually tires would not fit on Runners. They were too close together and not wide enough for the dual tires. Owner said that would have been ok b/c you don't really need all the tires for support anyway. Really? Why have duallys then? Final Y20. End of a row, no picnic table or fire ring-no room. Very close (10') to road on a curve. This is in older campground that has not had money reinvested in. Showers and bathroom clean (as they brag, but isn't that expected?) but dated and the stall doors leave big gaps when they are closed. This is not a campground for camping. There were no fires allowed ever (no so'mores, no hamburgers/steak/hot dogs, no sitting by the fire) and no picnic table on most sites because there is no room. There are a lot of extended stay campers who are working locally. Serves the purpose for a 1 night stay/place to sleep. My major complaint is we got charged the same price as a large camper on a larger site with picnic table. There were other sites available, but we felt that because we were a small unit, a truck camper, they only wanted us on a small site so as to save a bigger site, which several were available, just "in case" someone came in. Even tho we had reservations. Price should have been adjusted. Wifi was very weak and very slow when it did connect. I guess they were accommodating (although with snide remarks-asked if I ever owned an Air Stream because they can't be pleased either). Mostly upset about the cost/value ratio for our puny site when better sites were available, and still empty the next morning. They have high ratings - I guess your opinion depends on what you are used to. If you have never stayed at a truly nice campground, then you may rate this higher. We camped at AB Camping & RV Park in a Truck Camper.

Tips for other Campers:

The restaurant had great pulled pork and ribs! "Homemade" pies are a stretch (boxed choco pudding in a store bought crust..). Reviewers say the sites are very close and even hard to get in and out of, yet give it 4 stars? In our opinion, this is a below average campground, better than a Wal-Mart parking lot, but not worth the price of $46.

Mormon Island State Recreation Area, Doniphan, Nebraska

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

Just off I-80. Has a gas station/convenience store at entrance. And even a hotel. Across road from lake. Close to shower house and bathrooms ( which were very clean and nice). Grassy area was in shade. Nice lake for swimming. Beach bathrooms are bad. Could stay a couple days if you wanted to swim. No Wi-Fi. Some air TV stations. We camped at Mormon Island State Recreation Area in a Truck Camper.

Big Lake State Park, Craig, Missouri

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

We are just working our way in a circle from Illinois northerly to Washington state, down halfway in California and straight back to Illinois. So we usually are just stopping for 1 night because it is on the way. Easy to get to, good roads. Site #55. Across road from water. Sites at waters edge do not have electricity. Dump station. Also does not have water hook ups. Bathrooms/showers decent. Level site, spacing normal/acceptable. No wi-fi. AT&T cell service had 2 bars. Overall nice campground. Would stay for several days, but would need to have water sports to do (sea-doo, boat). We camped at Big Lake State Park in a Truck Camper.

Canyonside Campground, Bellvue, Colorado

Date of Stay: September, 2015 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

Here you are paying for the area, not so much the campground. Getting here is a GORGEOUS 32 drive through the Poudre River Canyon (outside of Ft. Collins). This area is an outdoorsman paradise-hiking, fishing, kayaking, canoe, rafting, hunting, horseback riding, ATV. Very beautiful and peaceful. A 50 min drive into Ft. Collins. A little store across the street. This is family owned by people who care about their property, and if you are causing problems, she will let you know and if you don't correct the problem, you will be asked to leave. It also has cabins. This would not accept the website, which is www.canyonsidecampground.com. This would be perfect for a family reunion for an active outdoorsy family. She also has destination weddings, rents the entire area for $2000 for the weekend. Great tent area, playground. Wildlife on the canyonside, river across the street (easy walk, beautiful view). Right across the street from Archers Resort, which has some groceries, and a food truck that has reasonable hamburger-type items, and breakfast. We camped at Canyonside Campground in a Truck Camper.

Tips for other Campers:

This is not for big rigs. She said she had a 30' trailer in, but it would be scary. They are all back in, but there is a circle driveway so you can get orientated correctly. This whole area (Poudre Canyon) has a special, peaceful, simple feel to it.

Glen Elder State Park, Glen Elder, Kansas

Date of Stay: September, 2015 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

Add an additional $5 for a day park pass. May have discount or different rates for multiple days. Plus premium sites had additional $2.50/day fee. We were on a premium site (close to water, level, shade). Clean park, as most state parks, no sewer hookup. Was quiet. Could see the sun set and rise from our spot. Bathrooms/showers okay. However no dressing room attached to shower. We just stopped overnight as it was on our route. Other campers were there for fishing. We camped at Glen Elder State Park in a Truck Camper.

Van's Campground, Brule, Nebraska

Date of Stay: September, 2015 - $27.00
Overall Rating:

Bathrooms could have been cleaner, flat sites but nothing but gray fine sand. Decent little store, friendly staff, caters to fishing. Has permanent mobile homes on one side. Laundry facility was fine. Had a beach, several lakeside spots, some shade. Pay showers $1/5 mins. Worked for us for an overnight stay while on the road (making a point to stay overnight on lake along our route). Not a lot of full/sewer hooks ups. We camped at Van's Campground in a Truck Camper.

Tips for other Campers:

A fellow camper loves the lake, has a seasonal spot, and said it is full on summer weekends. We didn't see the charm. Guess we've been blessed with very nice campgrounds. Sorry........

Buck Creek (Rathbun Lake) COE, Centerville, Iowa

Date of Stay: September, 2015 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

I believe we were overcharged for a 30amp, and no discounts were offered (guess we should have asked as we do belong to a couple groups). Loved it though. Spots are big and level, so peaceful (busier during summer I imagine as it is a beautiful lake for water activities). Close to Centerville for some shopping or even a movie. Do wish, however, that it had full hookups. We will be back, and have our spot picked out! We camped at Buck Creek (Rathbun Lake) COE in a Truck Camper.

Tips for other Campers:

We only stayed one night passing through, but will go back, primarily for fishing. But the non-fishing can go into Centerville, as it advertised interesting shops, restaurants, a movie theater, and even a HyVee!
