Rock Hound State Park, Deming, New Mexico

Date of Stay: February, 2016 - $14.00
Overall Rating:

This park is amazing. We reserved spot 15 the day before and when we pulled into the campground, a ranger offered to escort us to our site. Some of the sites looked difficult to get level, but when we pulled up to 15, we were happy to see it was not going to be an issue. This site is at the top of the campground so you get amazing views of the sunset and Deming at night. We had mentioned to the ranger that we wanted to stay an extra day and he told us that it may be booked but would check back with us in the morning. When I got up the next morning and went outside I was greeted by not only our camp host (who just stopped by to say hello) but also the ranger who told us all the sites were booked, but that one of the walk in sites had not yet renewed for the day. We hung around for a while trying to decide if we wanted to wait to see if the site became open or just move on, when the ranger came back to let us know that the site in question had renewed for the night but we were welcome to stay in group camping. We elected to move on, but I have never had that kind of customer service in a state park. Our site had a covered patio with a fire ring and picnic bench. We camped at Rock Hound State Park in a Motorhome.

Pancho Villa State Park, Columbus, New Mexico

Date of Stay: February, 2016 - $14.00
Overall Rating:

This park is very nice if you like the desert. The sites (water & electric only) are spacious and include a fire ring and covered picnic table. The museum on site is fantastic and the volunteers and rangers are all very helpful. The park wasn't very busy when we were here, so it was very quiet at night. We will return to stay a few nights and go into Mexico. We camped at Pancho Villa State Park in a Motorhome.

Jefferson County Fairgrounds, Golden, Colorado

Date of Stay: October, 2015 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

As others have commented, this is not a destination but it is a decent place to stay for a night or two. We stayed here because the campground we had stayed at during the week was booked for the weekend and we wanted to stay in the area. This park has a bizarre layout. We have a 45' rig and were assigned one the parallel spaces. Both the spots behind and in front of us were occupied so my husband had to parallel park the RV into a very tight space. It took a few tries, but he got down eventually. We were very close to our neighbors so don't expect any privacy in your outside area. There was a picnic bench though. There were some spots that looked like they had long term occupants, but these were camp hosts. The place didn't look run down, but it was a little cluttered and dirty. They have a very nice grass area that our 3 dogs enjoyed (not fenced in so no off leash) and they also have a dirt track where I took the dogs for a run. The one awesome thing about this park was the WiFi. It was fast and it never dropped. I would stay here again if I had to, but it's not a place I would go out of my way to visit. It was also fairly expensive for water and 30 amp only, no sewer. We camped at Jefferson County Fairgrounds in a Motorhome.

Chalk Creek Campground & RV Park, Nathrop, Colorado

Date of Stay: October, 2015 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

This park is very nice. We stayed in the upper campground in our RV and had a very nice end space with views of the mountains. The owners are very friendly and accommodating. When I called to make the reservation I told the owner we had three dogs and she made sure to put us right by the fully enclosed dog run (which my 3 pups loved!). The park is really pretty with little streams running through it, and of course the river if you are staying in the lower campground. The WiFi was OK, but we were visiting during the very end of season so there weren't many other guests. We were not able to get any local TV stations, though. We camped at Chalk Creek Campground & RV Park in a Motorhome.

Cherry Creek State Park, Aurora, Colorado

Date of Stay: October, 2015 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

We love Cherry Creek. So does everyone else because it is hard to get a reservation during peak season, especially on the weekend. In fact, we've been staying there for a few weeks but have to leave during the weekends because it's all pre-booked. The sites are beautiful and there are lots of walking and bike trails. We stayed in Buffalo loop and did notice coyotes, so keep your pets on a leash and with you at all times! The only thing stopping me from giving this park a 10 star review is that they will not open up the group camping areas for overflow on the weekends. They just sit unused which seems like such a waste. We camped at Cherry Creek State Park in a Motorhome.
