Glen Maury Park, Buena Vista, Virginia

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $19.00
Overall Rating:

The sites were essentially in an open field, but all we really wanted was electric hookup so we could have A/C (we had planned to boondock at the Walmart in Staunton but it was too warm to go without A/C). There were some townsfolk whom we met walking through the city park who were nice and told us about a concert going on at the pavilion at the end of the park. Our site was spacious because there was almost no one else in our section of the park. We camped at Glen Maury Park in a Motorhome.

Dillon State Park, Nashport, Ohio

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $19.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed at Dillon State Park to visit friends in the area. It has Passport America rates for non-prime days of the week (I think Monday-Thursday) - so our rate reflects one night with just a senior discount ($27) and 3 nights with PA ($15.67). There were no very convenient locations to fill with fresh water without blocking the roadway. The water at the dump station indicated that it was not potable. Good areas for walking around the campground. There are photos on the reservation system which help with knowing the configuration of the site (trees, levelness) - but many of the trees have been removed since the pictures were taken due to elm disease. We camped at Dillon State Park in a Motorhome.

Things to visit: Y bridge in Zanesville, John and Annie Glenn home in New Concord (S bridge is nearby). Check days of opening for Glenn home and National Road museum - they were closed Monday and Tuesday so we were not able to visit the National Road museum.

Three Springs Campground, Corinth, Kentucky

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

This park is very convenient for visiting the Ark Encounter. It is a small park and the sites are close together but the owners and workers are helpful and welcoming. There is a washer and dryer at the check-in/store that campground guests can use for $1.50/load in the washer and $1.50/load in the dryer. We camped at Three Springs Campground in a Motorhome.

Thousand Trails - Horseshoe Lakes, Clinton, Indiana

Date of Stay: July, 2017
Overall Rating:

Rate reflects that we are holders of a Thousand Trails Family Courtesy card - so actual cost was $0 (no additional charge for 50 amps at this campground). You never know what site you're going to get at Thousand Trails as your reservation just says that you can get "a" site. This campground is nice because they tell you which sites are available and will let you know where you are likely to fit. There are a number of seasonal sites at this campground, but the seasonal folks keep their sites up very nicely. The seasonal folks who were near our campsite had a garden and offered us fresh vegetables! There are quite a few walking trails that are accessible for bikes or golf carts as well. We camped at Thousand Trails - Horseshoe Lakes in a Motorhome.

Shopping in Paris, Illinois was good and closer than Terre Haute, though the Kroger in Paris was not a very complete store (the Walmart had better produce).

Willow Grove Park, Lake Dallas, Texas

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $17.00
Overall Rating:

We initially arrived at the campground on the Saturday of Easter weekend and it was PACKED - all the sites were occupied with many large groups, and then there were tents all over the place - I guess anywhere tents are allowed. Our site was near the boat ramp and there were vehicles parked in front of it that we needed to ask to move before we could get parked. First impression was NOT GOOD! But, after the crowds left, the park was wonderful. It is reasonably convenient to I-35E and there are shopping areas close by. We were in site 15 which was a bit unlevel side-to-side but doable to get level with jacks on a motorhome (we met a fellow who stays there often in a 5th wheel and he said it was very hard to level his rig on that site). The park limits stays to 14 days out of 30. They were very understanding when we needed to cut our stay short and refunded the days that we had not used. The dump station is back up toward I-35E - about a mile away - near the school. I would not want to try to dump during the time that school kids are being dropped off or picked up as there is a lot of traffic at that time. On the weekend when the park was packed, the other folks staying at the park were obviously not frequent campground stayers and did not observe normal etiquette - at about 11pm, the folks from the campsite behind us were at our picnic table eating and chatting (they had moved from the table at their site presumably to allow their children in the tents to sleep). Other fellow campers saw no issue with walking through our site. But, once the holiday weekend was over, even on other weekends, we did not experience similar situations. There is no camp host on site; the city says that the police come through frequently and I guess that is true though we never needed to take advantage of their presence. We camped at Willow Grove Park in a Motorhome.

Verde Valley RV & Camping Resort (Thousand Trails), Cottonwood, Arizona

Date of Stay: January, 2017 - $1.00
Overall Rating:

We enjoy staying at this park - the only down side is that cell phone and internet access is not very good. We have a cellular booster, and that helps, but it is still marginal. We don't try using the park's wifi - we did the first time we stayed here and it was pretty bad, and we prefer using our own for privacy and security reasons anyway. It was beautiful weather in January. They were in the process of upgrading the electricity in many of the sites so there were a lot of sites that were unavailable, but hopefully the upgrades will provide an even better experience in the future. We camped at Verde Valley RV & Camping Resort (Thousand Trails) in a Motorhome.

A-Bar-A RV Park & Storage Facility, Marana, Arizona

Date of Stay: January, 2017 - $13.00
Overall Rating:

This is our go-to park in the Tucson area. There is nothing special about it other than a great Passport America rate for 50A full hookups, and it is near where our family lives so a good value for us. It is a gravel lot, and, unfortunately on this visit, it had rained (and continued to rain) quite a lot, and the "overnight" spots just to the right of the office were nearly on an island with a moat of water around. The sites themselves were well above the water. We returned to the park in March and it was dry. This time we parked on the second row from the office, and we think those are preferable sites for us due to the length and levelness. We camped at A-Bar-A RV Park & Storage Facility in a Motorhome.

Saguaro Co-op Park - Escapees Park (members only), Benson, Arizona

Date of Stay: December, 2016 - $17.00
Overall Rating:

We used a coupon to stay for a week for $50, and then paid $20/night for 3 additional nights and $45 for electric. As is customary at Escapee parks and co-ops, this one is very friendly. We were there over Christmas, and although they had Christmas dinner all planned ahead of time, they had specifically saved 4 seats at each of the tables (I think there were 8 or 10 "groups" of 20) for those who were guests in the park. We expected to be welcomed warmly, and we were not disappointed. The sites are available from leaseholders in the park, so each site is unique. The site we had (214) was essentially an empty lot which was great for us. Because of the weight of our rig (52K), they specifically put us on a gravel site rather than a site with a concrete pad or pavers. We camped at Saguaro Co-op Park - Escapees Park (members only) in a Motorhome.

Mustang Island State Park, Port Aransas, Texas

Date of Stay: December, 2016 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

The park is essentially an asphalt parking lot with sites down both sides of the lot. It is designed that two RVs would be parked right next to each other sharing the utility area - but the utilities would be on the wrong side of one of them, so you'd potentially need extra hoses/electric cords. The Gulf of Mexico is just on the other side of the dunes, so you get good breezes and it is nice to go over to walk on the beach. There was a covered picnic table for each site - but for one of the pair, it would be on your "off" side (unless you parked backwards, which may be possible for motorhomes but wouldn't be for trailers or 5th wheels). Since we were here during "off" season, it was not crowded, so essentially only one RV was in each paired space which made it comfortable. I think our RV may have been a bit long (43') but there was still plenty of room to drive down the middle road between the RV sites so it was no issue. We camped at Mustang Island State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

We enjoyed driving to Padre National Seashore and taking the Jeep out on a drive down the beach for several miles. There were campsites down there too, and we considered going there, but decided that our rig was too large. There were boondocking spots down the beach, but again, we wouldn't take our heavy rig out onto the sand - with the Jeep, we were glad we had optional 4WD, though we didn't have to use it.

We stayed in D section which was down near the river. Though we did not see the river from our site, there were many deer who came through in the morning and evening and made our stay enjoyable. Pilot Knoll Park & Campground, Argyle, Texas

Date of Stay: December, 2016 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

Campground has beautiful gravel sites. Another camper told us that last year this entire peninsula was under water and therefore they have had to rebuild all the sites. The sites are built up with large 8x8 timbers outlining the sites and holding in the gravel. It appeared that each site had a picnic table, grill, and fire ring. There were a few pull through sites in the middle. Though the road in the campground is narrow, we did not have problems navigating it with our 43' motorhome, nor did we have problems with branches attacking the roof as another reviewer indicated. There was a limb overhanging near the entrance of site 45 that we were careful to avoid when backing in and when leaving the site.
Note that you may not want to overhang the 8x8 timbers if you are going to air-level your motorhome - ours would have tried to sit the tow bar down on top of the timber if we hadn't made sure that we were far enough forward of the timber before leveling. We camped at Pilot Knoll Park & Campground in a Motorhome.

Hickory Creek COE (Closed until March 2019), Lewisville, Texas

Date of Stay: November, 2016 - $14.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed at Hickory Creek in multiple sites in November and December, 2016. Note that some sites are quite sloping - we originally booked site 10 and we would have had the front end (and door) of our motorhome *way* off the ground to get level there. Sites we stayed in that were reasonably level were 13, 34, 52, and 95.

Seniors get half price which is $14 for 30A or $15 for 50A.

Good walking areas throughout the park. Note that the entrance gate closes at 10pm and it is a mile+ walk to the campground. Ranger recommended we leave one vehicle inside the gate if we would be returning after 10pm - but we only have the one tow vehicle in addition to the motorhome. (We moved to another location for the weekend when we had late evening events scheduled.)

Hickory Creek is most convenient to Denton, and it isn't too bad for getting onto I-35E (but the construction on I-35E is awful). Hickory Creek is our favorite of the 3 parks we have stayed at in this area - best value for the money - as long as you don't need to be out after 10pm. Use Waze on your smartphone to help with directions when you're returning to the campground, especially after 8pm, as sometimes there are exits closed due to the construction. We camped at Hickory Creek COE (Closed until March 2019) in a Motorhome.

Walking in the campground - nice paved walking paths as well as the campground roads. Be aware that the exits off of I-35E may have been repositioned (or closed) since your GPS's maps were updated - we found Waze was the most reliable information. When coming to the campground from the south in the toad (not the RV), we found it was usually better to get off on the Lake Park exit and take a very long frontage road path rather than the Swisher Road exit.

Lake Conroe RV & Camping Resort / Thousand Trails, Willis, Texas

Date of Stay: October, 2016 - $3.00
Overall Rating:

We arrived on the Friday before Halloween and the park was pretty full. We initially parked in one of the 50A pull throughs (58) - these are the sites where you are side-to-side with the RV next to you on your "services" side. It would be tricky with slides (we don't have any). The site was also not very level so our front end (and door) were way up in the air. By Sunday afternoon, many folks were leaving, so we moved to the E section (I think site 73) which was nice and level.

We were just looking for a place to stay so we could go over to Polk County to vote and pick up some packages at the Escapees Mail Center. It was about an hour drive over to Livingston, but less expensive to stay at Thousand Trails since we have access to a membership through Family Courtesy Card. We camped at Lake Conroe RV & Camping Resort / Thousand Trails in a Motorhome.

Lewisville Lake Park Campground, Lewisville, Texas

Date of Stay: October, 2016 - $9.00
Overall Rating:

We like staying at Lake Park when we return to the DFW area for doctors / dentists visits twice a year. The senior rate of $9/night for 50A with water is a good deal for this area. The interior roads are in poor shape and the gate is locked at night - but folks who live in the area could still walk into the campground with no problem. When we stayed at this park in April, 2016, the RVer in the site next to us had two bicycles stolen - lock your bikes.

We were in site 77 which is really long and has good separation from the rig on your "passenger" side. I think they try not to put anyone in 78 because it is very very close.

The campground does not seem to allow 50A RVs to stay in 30A sites - said they have had problems with that causing issues on their 30A hookups. We camped at Lewisville Lake Park Campground in a Motorhome.

Wonderful areas to walk around in the Lewisville park that surrounds the campground. Easy access to other areas in DFW. I-35E is *horrible*. We experienced getting a nail in a tire of our Jeep 3 times while staying here (2x in April, 2016, 1x in October, 2016) - can't say that it was due to the campground - maybe due to I-35E construction.
