Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Guadalupe River, Kerrville, Texas

Date of Stay: December, 2017 - $50.00
Overall Rating:

Right on the Guadalupe River, but you can't really see it from your site. Take a walk down the nature path - it's about a 1-mile loop. We don't have kids, so we didn't check on all those activities. Showers and restrooms were clean. Site needed some leveling side-to-side. Very long asphalt site. Concrete patio. Very quiet when we were there in December. Verizon cell service good at campground, spotty in some other areas of Kerrville. Satellite good. Small store (Ranger station) on-site. Lots to do in town. We camped at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Guadalupe River in a Fifth Wheel.

Midland RV Campground, Midland, Texas

Date of Stay: November, 2017 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

This is our second time to stay here. The staff was friendly and helpful. It's not much to look at, but most parks in this area are more for housing oilfield workers than vacationers. Mostly permanent residents, but all the short-timers and overnighters are in one easy to negotiate section. No pool. Two dog parks, showers and restrooms were clean. Did not use laundry, but several units appeared to be out of order. The sites are situated on large asphalt parking lot, no grass. But it was level and had full hook ups. WiFi was ok, did not try cable. Satellite no problem. Verizon cell service good. Easy access to I-20, but the roads right around the park can be a bit rough. Also, I-20 is getting to have a lot of traffic, but you can also take I-20 Business. Great for overnight or if you have business in the area. We camped at Midland RV Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Pecan Park Riverside RV , San Marcos, Texas

Date of Stay: November, 2017 - $55.00
Overall Rating:

Not sure what I was expecting for the resort-level price. They charge your card for the entire stay when you book it and there is nothing in the reservation process to indicate that you can get a Good Sam discount even though I saw a GS logo on the park office. But otherwise I really can't find anything to complain about. The staff was friendly and helpful. The pads are gravel, but the patio is concrete. It was level side-to-side. The sites seem to vary from tight to roomy. Ours was roomy. Lots of workers and Winter Texans, but everyone was quiet, friendly, and good neighbors. The river is just a short walk down from the park. All the amenities you'd need - dog parks, pool, activity room, propane fill, laundry, showers, cable, etc. I was very impressed by how clean everything was. The laundry and showers were as clean (if not cleaner) than at home. They are still rebuilding portions of the park and facilities from a devastating flood a few years ago, and some of the campground roads need a bit of work. They looked narrow, but we had no trouble negotiating them. Most of the sites on the river side were very shady (it does look like an old pecan orchard), so satellite can be tricky. We found a hole through the trees looking south though. There are sites on the off-river side that have no trees if your satellite can't be moved away from your rig. Campground wifi is outstanding - they have commercial-level service and speed, and don't charge extra for it. Did not try the cable TV. Verizon cell service good. Everything you need in the area - Walmart, grocery, restaurants, etc. Easy access to I-35 for Austin or New Braunfels. We enjoyed our stay and would stay here again. We camped at Pecan Park Riverside RV in a Fifth Wheel.

Be careful in the field overlooking the river - there are cockleburrs if you stray from the path. If you're a recycler - check out Green Guys Recycling next to the Walmart on Hwy 80. Access 24/7.

Westlake RV Resort, Houston, Texas

Date of Stay: October, 2017 - $49.00
Overall Rating:

Very nice campground close to everything you need in a big city. Staff was courteous. Only restroom/shower is near the front in the rec building. The rec room was clean and inviting. There is a small workout area with resistance machines, treadmills, and elliptical - everything was clean and working. Pool table actually had all the balls and cues. TV, comfy chairs, popcorn. Restroom and shower very spacious and clean. Pool and hot tub looked clean and inviting, but I didn't use them. Campground wifi surprisingly fast. No problem with cell or TV due to proximity to big city. Did not try cable hookup, but no problem with Dish satellite due to no real trees. Each site has small tree (mostly for show, not shade), and decent amount of soft, well kept grass. Dog walk area is through side gates along Bear Creek - very nice. Lots of amenities that we didn't use, such as outdoor kitchens and dog wash. Also has on-site storage units available. Park was very full when we were there, but it was only 2 months after Hurricane Harvey. Mostly full time residents and snowbirds, but we felt welcome for the weekend we were there. Everyone very friendly and well behaved. Big rigs to small trailers, but nothing trashy. We camped at Westlake RV Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Groceries, restaurants, Best Buy, Home Depot, Petsmart - literally everything you need is within 5 miles. Go about 6 miles north on Barker Cypress to Towne Lake to the Land of a Thousand Hills Coffee & Bakery for a latte and pastry. Also, go to Cullen Park for miles of hike & bike trails through Addicks/Barker Reservoir - great place to go for a run.

Fredericksburg RV Park, Fredericksburg, Texas

Date of Stay: November, 2016 - $42.00
Overall Rating:

This is a great park: quiet and roomy. The pads are gravel, mostly level (one block on drivers side), with small trees: mostly sunny. No amenities such as pool or playground if you're looking for that. Just 1.5 miles from downtown, so very close and convenient. Easy to navigate, all pull-throughs except the overflow sites. Dog run in back. Restrooms were very nice: basically 5 or 6 individual rooms that had shower, toilet, sink (just like home) and very clean. Laundry was very big, clean, and all units worked. Recreation room also. Several long-term residents and Winter Texans, but all sites were very well maintained and pretty. Staff was courteous and helpful. There were not a lot of families and children. Digital cable channels, wifi good. Verizon cell service was solid. We camped at Fredericksburg RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

There is a food truck park right next door. Walk over and have a delicious burger from Mahaleys. There is also a beer bar in the middle of the truck park. There were only 2 trucks when we were there, but they are working on getting more. Also try the Sunset Grille: off the beaten path, but close to the park. Menu is limited but excellent! Check out the Exxon on Hwy 16/Windcrest as a place to get gas if you are towing your rig. It's reasonably roomy.

Midland RV Campground, Midland, Texas

Date of Stay: November, 2016 - $42.00
Overall Rating:

Park is entirely asphalt, and is mostly utilitarian. Restrooms were clean, didn't try showers. Laundry room had some broken units, but basically clean. Very convenient to Midland and Odessa. Very easy to get to off I-20. There is some road noise at night from I-20 which is 1/4 south and the train tracks which are 1/4 mile north, but it's mostly muted. Lots of permanent residents from the oil fields.

Very windy, so don't put out your awning. Staff was courteous and friendly. 2 dog runs. The whole park is not much to look at, but it gets the job done for an overnight or if you have business in the area (we were visiting family). Wifi was very fast and solid. Good cell service for Verizon. Cable TV offered many channels. We camped at Midland RV Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Kerrville KOA, Kerrville, Texas

Date of Stay: November, 2016 - $29.00
Overall Rating:

Very cozy, out of the way campground in the Texas Hill Country. About 10 minutes from Kerrville, on a windy country road. There is nothing within walking distance. The trade-off is that you can see all the stars at night! The sites are not large. Mostly back-ins but there are a few pull-throughs that had big rigs in them. The sites barely have enough room to park tow vehicle or toad. Grass/gravel site was reasonably level. Most sites have trees/shade. The small country store and laundromat on-site is also used by residents in the area. Everything very clean and in good working order. Small dog run. Only complaint is that Verizon service was almost non-existent. Had to walk outside the trailer to the neighborhood behind camp to make calls. Also, the camp wireless was down several times, and took several hours to fix. Staff was very courteous and friendly, as were some Winter Texans staying there. Kerrville has all the amenities you need. It's a very laid-back, artsy little town right on the river. We camped at Kerrville KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

Most of the restaurants along Hwy 27 have seating that overlooks the river for a nice view. Also try the Hill Country Cafe in town for breakfast. Lots of deer in the area (including the campground) so be careful driving at night.

Lake Conroe / Houston North KOA , Montgomery, Texas

Date of Stay: November, 2016 - $46.00
Overall Rating:

We've stayed here many times and love it. Sites are roomy and level. All concrete. Staff is always courteous and helpful. Restrooms/showers are clean and always in working order. Two good-sized dog parks. There's a little general store on-site, and tons of stuff in nearby Conroe and Montgomery. Not a woodsy, outdoorsy type of campground, more of a resort. They also have a pool, hot tub, lots of kids activities, but I've never used them. The facility is very large, so it's easy to get a good walk in after dinner. I think cable TV is available, but you're close enough to Houston to get most networks over the air. We camped at Lake Conroe / Houston North KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Nearby Montgomery (5 minutes) is a quaint little town, with a small-town grocery and several interesting places to eat. They often have holiday celebrations, and we always go to the July 4th parade. Conroe (15 minutes) has all the amenities of a big city - groceries, restaurants, big-box stores, etc. We like to watch the July 4th fireworks over the lake.

Sandpiper RV Resort, Galveston, Texas

Date of Stay: November, 2015 - $50.00
Overall Rating:

Although a small park, the concrete sites are long, spacious, and level. And very clean, well manicured. Being near the beach, there's no trees other than a few palm trees. Full hookups at all sites, including cable TV. Close proximity to Houston meant good cell coverage and off-air antenna. Nice pool/hot tub area, although I didn't use it. The restrooms were clean and spacious. The showers were more like beach showers - no pressure, and you had to push a button every 30 seconds to activate it. The shower in the RV was better. Easy 500-ft walk to the beach or the seawall without crossing the road. Excellent location for being a tourist, you could even walk to several restaurants if you wanted. Very windy because of the nearby beach. Pet-friendly, but no separate dog area (really not needed with the beach right there). Staff was friendly, but we didn't have much interaction with them. Did not test the WiFi. Road noise not an issue. We will definitely stay again. We camped at Sandpiper RV Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Sites #32 - #40 are directly on Seawall Blvd with no fencing. Would not recommend these sites if you have kids or pets. Also sitting outside right on the side of the road might not be much fun either.

The short walk to the beach at sunrise is well worth getting up early! Also, be sure to check the high/low tide chart, as some of the beach is underwater at high tide.
