Arrowhead RV Resort, Ely, Minnesota

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

We travel in a 43 foot fifth wheel and long bed 350 truck. We spent three months in Ely this summer. Water, electric and WiFi were good, WiFi got bogged down when Park was full, but park usually about half empty. Park has winterized sites. Park staff bent over backwards to help us out during our stay, increasing the quality of our experience. Bathhouse, office, electrical posts and community room have been recently remodeled and are high end. Interior roads, grass, site drives and picnic tables have not received the same level of attention and need it. Weeds all but obscure some site drives. Basically the park is nicer than it at first looks. Park is walking distance to town and connects to walking/biking trails. CAMPFIRES ARE NOT ALLOWED, but there is a lovely outdoor area with chairs, propane barbecues and propane fire pits. Overflow areas available when park is full. We highly recommend this park. We camped at Arrowhead RV Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Ely Safe Ride will transport around town, and as far away as Minneapolis. Rockwood was our favorite restaurant. The Ely Folk School has fabulous classes and activities, but be sure to sign up in advance.

Timberline Campground, Waukee, Iowa

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $48.00
Overall Rating:

Electric, water and WiFi were all adequate. The park is lovely with much green space and mature trees. There is a small camp store on site. It is plagued by a gun range that sounds to be just NE of the park. We travel in a 43 foot fifth wheel and a long body king cab truck. I was very clear about this when making reservations. Our site was easy in, and a 45 minute nightmare to get out of, dodging trees rocks and fences. Clearly it would have been to our advantage to have walked the site instead of trusting staff. I believe they would have accommodated a request if they could. At least half of the sites require 90 degree turns to get in and out. Sites are narrow with, as mentioned, multiple obstacles. Big Rigs be alert. Sites 72-90 looked more appropriate for big rigs. Perhaps they didn't put us there due to gun noise? We camped at Timberline Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Minneapolis Southwest KOA, Jordan, Minnesota

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

We have a 43 foot Fifth Wheel. Staff were pleasant and helpful. Groundskeepers were always out and about. However, the site was narrow and barely long enough for trailer and truck. We had torrential rains, which resulted in our section of the park to be ankle deep in water. We were warned not to try and exit by circling the park, as we would not clear the apex of the hill. This resulted in us having to go left out of the site and make two more rapid lefts, up a hill, in the mud. We didn't hit anything. More a tribute to my husband's driving than the set up of the park. If you are a big rig, sites 67-78 are the only reasonable sites. Otherwise, it was a pretty, well-maintained park. Mini golf is in desperate need of renovation, it is rapidly moldering back into the ground. We camped at Minneapolis Southwest KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

Peculiar Park Place RV Park, Peculiar, Missouri

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $33.00
Overall Rating:

This is a pleasantly, dare I say, peculiar park. Internal navigation in some areas was difficult, as the park is designed on a hilly site. Our rig is 43 feet long, so that is some of the issue. Staff changed our site when we had difficulty maneuvering the rig around the various piles of rocks, vehicles and permanent obstacles by our first site. This park is the opposite of a park in an open field. Each site is different. The new area in the back (72-81) is lovely and seems to be fore long term campers. Much of the park is landscaped. It was early spring, but it needed a bit of work to reach peculiar perfection. Strangely there was only one restroom/shower. It was clean and beautifully finished, more like a residential than a commercial bathroom. We would return. Many sites had cement patios and tables. We camped at Peculiar Park Place RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Bull Shoals - White River State Park, Bull Shoals, Arkansas

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

One of my favorite parks, EVER. This is a park designed by somebody who actually has camped in a camper. Lots are spacious, each full hook up site has a cement patio offset from the camp, perfect for setting up a sun shade. Some sites have overview of the river, but access to the length of the river is public. New area was being updated while we were there, doubling the number of full hook ups. The park information center is up the road, necessitating a drive, but is impressive. There are many activities available in the park, including those appropriate for children. I would have stayed all summer if they didn't have a fourteen day maximum. We camped at Bull Shoals - White River State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

The laundromat in Bull Shoals was FILTHY. I tracked down the owner to complain, and he assured me that it just hadn't been cleaned that day. I assure you it hadn't been cleaned in much longer than that. The Harp's grocery store in Bull Shoals is adequate. The one in Mountain Home is excellent. We were impressed with the guides from Dally's Ozark Fly in Cotter, and he also has a well equipped and staffed store.

Tom Sawyer's Mississippi River Park, West Memphis, Arkansas

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $42.00
Overall Rating:

We loved this park. It was amazing how relaxing just sitting and watching the Mississippi River flow by turned out to be. The sites by the river are in an open, sunny field. Those set back from the water are in shaded woods. There is a HUGE open field by the river suitable for kite flying, and multiple benches by the river for general use. Staff were helpful, leading us to our site. They even stopped and checked the Uber car coming to pick us up as they didn't recognize it. Some of the campers in the shaded area appeared to be living there long term, and I felt a bit uncomfortable walking in that area. But sites were generally tidy. It's a simple drive to downtown Memphis. We camped at Tom Sawyer's Mississippi River Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Lebanon Hills Regional Park Campground, Apple Valley, Minnesota

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

This is one of our favorite parks. It is convenient to Mall of America and the airport. it is clean, roomy and very green. Staff is pleasant, helpful and available for extended hours. There are only a few sites for very long rigs, so make your reservations early. The entry into the park was designed to keep cars from going too fast, not for large rigs to pass each other comfortably. It is curvy with poor visibility. Fortunately it is a short drive. We camped at Lebanon Hills Regional Park Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Tom Sawyer's Mississippi River Park, West Memphis, Arkansas

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $42.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed at Tom Sawyer in a 42' fifth wheel. What a cool park. It is right on the banks of the Mississippi and we have spent hours watching the water and the barges go by. In addition is has a huge green space for strolling and dog walking and many benches on the edge of the river to enjoy the scenery. Tree shaded sites are a bit farther from the river, but still have a view. Sites on the SW riverfront have afternoon shade. Negotiating interior roads was simple. Laundry and the two bathrooms are extremely far from most sites. They were clean and roomy. Some sites are concrete and some gravel. WiFi is very slow and has been off line for most of a day. Water pressure is low, other utilities are fine. We would go out of our way to return here and would do so even if it were not close to a major city or tourist attraction. We camped at Tom Sawyer's Mississippi River Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

West Memphis is not a happening place. The Kroger is pretty good. Travel into Memphis is easy, and you can also take Uber or Lyft if you plan on drinking. The Tourist Bureau across from Bass Pro Shop allowed our friends to leave their large truck in the RV parking area and take public transportation to see the city.

Movietown RV Park, Canton, Mississippi

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $27.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed at Movietown in a 42' fifth wheel and found it sufficient for an overnight. Most of the inhabitants appear to be permanent or semi-permanent workers. That said, sites are tidy, without the frequently trash-strewn look of many similar parks. Prior to becoming an RV park, it was clearly a field. Gravel roads were put in and ditches dug to ensure drainage. That said, no terraforming was done and the sites are not level, especially the transient sites. We needed eight Stackers to bring our rear up to meet the front. The ditches are an obstacle for pulling into the sites. You DO NOT want to slip a wheel into one. Otherwise negotiating the park was easy. Grass was mowed, ditches weed-whipped and the park appeared tidy. However, there were three piles of dog excrement on our site and at least one on the neighboring site by the hook ups. Nasty. There were a few shade trees for the permanent sites. Electrical was fine. The water pressure was extremely high, and I would not hook up here without a water pressure monitor. We would return here if needed, but we would not seek this park out. site was not long enough for fifth wheel and truck, we had to park on the grass. We camped at Movietown RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Pensacola RV Park, Pensacola, Florida

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

This is a lovely park, lovingly maintained. Sites are a bit close, but there is significant green space between clusters of sites, and a pond which you may walk half way around. All sites had a bricked patio area. Ask for a site in the older section for a bit more room. There are shaded and full sun sites. Utilities were fine. Interior road was a bit rough, but short. There's about a mile of narrower residential paved road to reach the park, so don't panic when you seem to have left the commercial area. We were so impressed we talked about considering this park as our winter home. Be aware that they are very busy, and make reservations well in advance. We arrived on a Friday and the owner told us he had already turned away three people for lack of sites. We camped at Pensacola RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Beaver Lake Campground, Quincy, Florida

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

Yes, it is a big grassy area. Had enough room for our 43' trailer and truck. Large, open, level grassy field that would be perfect for exercising larger dogs. Some odor from the back of the gas station, I think it was the chicken fryer. Basic, easy on, easy off, felt safe, full hook up. We'll stop here again as we pass through. I would be a bit concerned if there had been recent heavy rains about the stability of the soil surface. We camped at Beaver Lake Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Kansas City West / Lawrence KOA , Lawrence, Kansas

Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

How much you like this park depends on what you want from your camping experience. The facility is nice for families. Two playgrounds, one with a mini-zip line the kids seem to love. A small but sparkling pool, shuffleboard, rec room, peddle bikes, etc. Bath house is clean, but is very far from the tent areas. There is a large fenced dog area. Most sites are very flat and the electric and water are fine. Employees are very helpful and amenable. The environment leaves me cold. Most of the sites are just wide enough for a picnic table (the narrow way), and rigs are parked back to front so you share your site with your neighbor. It does keep you from sitting next to your neighbor's sewer drain. The interior roads are gravel and talc-like dust. Every time somebody drives by, you are swept with dust if the wind is in the wrong quarter. The tollway is less than a mile away and noisy, and there is a busy railroad somewhere through the shrubbery. There is also a mysterious large ditch of standing water along the west edge of the park. Again, if the wind is from the west, or you are over on that side of the park, you can smell the stank. There are a number of trees large enough to provide true shade. It is fine for an overnight or a day or two. I would never stay here for an extended time, again. We camped at Kansas City West / Lawrence KOA in a Motorhome.

Both the car GPS and the Garmin could not find the park effectively. Coming from the north, we had to drive about three quarters of a mile farther down 40 to find the park. The Merc Co+op has great organic foods, and the best bread I could find in town.

Arrowhead RV Resort, Ely, Minnesota

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

This was a surprise, and we were confused as to why it wasn't packed. It is situated at the edge of Ely, and there were walking paths into town. The park itself appears a bit desolate. It is flat, and needed mowing. However, there was green space around the park. The bathhouse and clubhouse were newly remodelled and beautiful. It had FULL hook up and was easily long enough for our 40' rig and tow vehicle. It was quiet and convenient to town. Perhaps they can spend a bit more time making the sites reflect the buildings in terms of quality. It is a four-season park. It is gated, and if the camp host had not happened to be there when we arrived at 5pm, we couldn't have gotten in. I called the first number on the door to get the code. No answer. There was no information packet waiting for us. Be sure you have the code before you arrive. We have already reserved to return for an extended stay next summer. We camped at Arrowhead RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Deerwood Park, Evansdale, Iowa

Overall Rating:

The park was quite nice and relaxed. The FHU sites were packed, and we saw almost no turnover in the 8 days we were there. The keep 1-2 FHU for overnighters. There was always sites with just electric and water. Most sites backed up into large grassy areas. Many were well shaded. Tent camping looked Spectacular. Noise from highway was bothersome in our area of the camp. The river was murky, but they had had 8" of rain upstream just prior to our arrival. Decent park for kids with lots of room, tons of playgrounds, easy access for launching kayaks and such. There is also a disc frisbee course we didn't see. We would stop here again. Overall Rating:

We stopped on a weekend layover traveling from Florida to Minnesota. Unfortunately, the temperature almost 100 with heat index of 107. It didn't get much below 80 at night. We didn't get around the park as much as we'd hoped. Bath houses were clean, except for a wash of dead bugs in the morning, of which the park was aware and trying to control. Electric and water were fine. The sites were all very different, some shaded, some smaller. There was not much choice for our 40' rig. We stayed on the edge of the boat ramp (84). Last site available. Interestingly, it was very private, flat and except for almost full sun, a fine place for us to stay. Sites 103-110 are basically parallel parking along the edge of a large paved oval by the swim dock. Most other sites are very charming and tucked into the landscape. Most are well shaded with mature trees. I was pleasantly surprised that the park had giant industrial fans on the shaded swim dock. I assume so that the little children didn't die of heat exposure. I would love to return in more clement weather. We camped at Canal COE in a Motorhome.

Bring what you need with you. There is quite a drive to a close grocery store. There is a small market a few miles away, but a little pricey. Patti's 1880's Settlement is a huge tourist spot. Bill's Restaurant received a B from us, and was more expensive then it was worth. Think Country Kitchen on steroids.
