Raleigh Oaks RV Resort, Four Oaks, North Carolina

Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

I would have rated this campground higher except that my site was terrible and management didn't seem to care. I reserved what was billed as a "premium pull thru" and apparently nothing says premium like dumpsters outside your front door. The constant traffic around our site to the dumpsters was not nearly as bad as the truck that arrived at 6:40 am to empty them. When I mentioned this to management I was given a flippant response of "yes sometimes they come at 3:30 in the afternoon too". I was not offered a different site even though the campground was only about half full. The standard pull thru sites are very nice so I would recommend you don't pay more for a premium site that is slightly larger but less desirable. Otherwise the campsites are nicely spaced with grass in between. Utilities are well placed and functional. There are few trees so there was no problem getting satellite tv and the Verizon signal was good. There is basic cable that we did not use. The WiFi only worked sporadically and was down the first day we were there. We camped at Raleigh Oaks RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Yellowstone Grizzly RV Park, West Yellowstone, Montana

Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $79.00
Overall Rating:

We were in a premium pull thru site which was long, level and spacious. Grass is irrigated and lush even in late August. Pine trees between sites gave us shade and we were still able to get satellite tv reception. Laundry room was immaculate. Verizon signal was good. While there was no enclosed dog park but the campground abuts a national forest where you can walk for miles on wide trails. Definitely would stay here again. We camped at Yellowstone Grizzly RV Park in a Motorhome.

Yellowstone is a very busy park with limited parking at attractions. Get up and go early for the best experience. West Yellowstone has many touristy stores and restaurants. Wild West Pizza and Saloon is funky fun, good pizza and mac & cheese.

Colter Bay Village RV Park -- Full Hookups (Concessionaire Operated) , Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $63.00
Overall Rating:

Great place from which to explore the park. Very quiet and beautiful setting in the woods near the lake. Nice hiking trails around the lake. Site required blocks to level and hookups all worked well. There is no cable or WiFi and no Verizon service. There is WiFi at the restaurant within walking distance. We camped at Colter Bay Village RV Park -- Full Hookups (Concessionaire Operated) in a Motorhome.

The Virginian Lodge RV Resort, Jackson, Wyoming

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $100.00
Overall Rating:

This is it if you want to spend a night in Jackson Hole. When you call to make a reservation the first thing they mention is the price. The park is a little rough, roads and spaces are tight. We were able to park our car sideways behind our 35' motorhome at our pull thru site. Everything worked is the best thing I can say. Nothing special here except the cost. We camped at The Virginian Lodge RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Mountain Valley RV Resort, Heber City, Utah

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

Everything about this RV resort is first class. Paved access roads are double wide and easy to navigate. There are two sides to the park. The newer section is adults only and is all concrete with rough rock between. We stayed in the older section of the park that allows children and has grass between the sites. Either side is nice but if you have a dog or just prefer grass over concrete it can be a good long walk to a grassy area on the "adult" side. There is a nice small dog park on the older side, and a HUGE grassy dog park on the new side. This park served us well as a base for day trips to Provo, Park City and Salt Lake City. We camped at Mountain Valley RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Park City has an olympic training facility that was a site for the 2002 winter olympics. There is a ski museum and if you can catch the athletes practicing jumps from ramps into the pool during the summer its awesome free entertainment.

Zion River Resort RV Park & Campground, Virgin, Utah

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $62.00
Overall Rating:

This campground has a bit of a split personality. Our first three nights here were at back-in site 52 against the river. Really your up against a six foot rock and soil berm and the river is somewhere in the brush behind. The site was barely big enough for our 35 foot motorhome with the car parked sideways in front. There were small trees against both sides so we could not use our awning, the site was all gravel and the hookups, for some strange reason, were up in the front of the site. We made do for three days until a new neighbor decided to take as much of our limited space as he could with his slide out and we asked to be moved. The staff could not have been more accommodating and moved us to an interior pull through site for the remainder of our weeks stay. With that our entire camping experience changed. The pull throughs are concrete and grass with adequate spacing and shade trees between sites. Even the cable worked better. No matter what site you have this is a well run campground convenient to Zion. There is no cell service for Verizon users, even the booster at the office could barely keep a call connected. WiFi had some evening outages but otherwise worked well. We camped at Zion River Resort RV Park & Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

For an enjoyable Zion experience go early. On our first day we barely scored a parking space at 9:30 am, the shuttle lines were 40 minutes long and the busses were packed. On our second day we arrived at 7 AM, parked close and walked right onto a half filled shuttle. We did our hiking before it was crowded and hot then had a late brunch at Oscars (highly recommended) just outside the park.

Trailer Village (Concessionnaire Operated), Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $46.00
Overall Rating:

Surprising for a national park but most sites have no trees, no grass, no shrubs, no shade. Our site was not level and required blocking under tires. It was also across from the bathrooms which meant there was constant cut through foot traffic. Given that half the campers were rentals driven by newbies and there are no walkways between rows we decided to just look the other way while our site was occupied by others. Minor inconveniences are worth it to stay at the only place inside the park with full hookups. All of the campground utilities worked well. Verizon signal was weak and worked for data mornings and evenings but was useless during the day when 200,000 people were trying to transmit selfies from the canyon rim. Seniors beware your America The Beautiful pass will not entitle you to a discount here. We camped at Trailer Village (Concessionnaire Operated) in a Motorhome.

Holbrook / Petrified Forest KOA, Holbrook, Arizona

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

This can only be described as a muddy gravel pit. The sites and roads are basically poorly drained hard packed dirt with a thin layer of gravel so when it rains its a mess and stays that way for a while. Because the entire campground is gravel its hard to determine where the road ends and your site begins, so campers were parked haphazardly and often uncomfortably close. There is traffic noise from nearby Interstate 40 on one side and constant train noise on the other. Unfortunately the other campgrounds in town are just as bad so if you want to visit Petrified Forrest NP this may be your best choice. We camped at Holbrook / Petrified Forest KOA in a Motorhome.

Santa Fe Skies RV Park, Santa Fe, New Mexico

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

Pull thru patio site was unlevel enough we had to run the rear wheels up on blocks so the levelers would not raise them off the ground. Sites could use some weed control but otherwise OK. Beautiful vistas. Good WiFi and Verizon signal. Very nice dog park and 3/4 mile walking loop around park. Laundry was expensive and only accepts credit cards. While not close to attractions there was easy access to downtown, shopping and restaurants. We camped at Santa Fe Skies RV Park in a Motorhome.

Taos Valley RV Park & Campground, Taos, New Mexico

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $39.00
Overall Rating:

Very nice campground close to downtown Taos. Pull through sites alternate direction like buddy sites but there is enough space, small trees and shrubs to make the spacing comfortable. Most sites are reasonably level but we did have to stay in the back of our site, disconnect the car, and run the right front tire up on pads so the levelers wouldn't lift it off the ground. We were fortunate to have an end site with a beautiful view of the horizon. Hookups were easily accessible. There is no cable TV. WiFi worked well even though the campground was fairly full. Verizon signal was good. We camped at Taos Valley RV Park & Campground in a Motorhome.

Tucumcari KOA, Tucumcari, New Mexico

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

We had a full hookup pull through site for two nights. As others have said you will face in opposite direction to your neighbor and the sites are quite close. Our drivers side slide outs were only about four feet from the next RV. If your comfortable being that close then this is a good overnight campground easily accessible from I-40 with acceptable road noise. WiFi was not usable. Verizon signal was good. We camped at Tucumcari KOA in a Motorhome.

Amarillo Ranch RV Park, Amarillo, Texas

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

While we had reserved a pull through site upon arrival we were asked if we would accept a back in site since we were there for three nights. Big mistake. We were placed in a half occupied residential section behind the campground that, while well maintained by the park, had a number of poorly maintained permanent trailers. There was constant road noise from I-40. Water, sewer, and electric hookups worked fine but the WiFi, if you could connect, was not usable. Verizon signal was good. Limo service to the Big Texan was a nice touch. Good location from which to explore Amarillo but I would stay on the west side of town if we came back. We camped at Amarillo Ranch RV Park in a Motorhome.

Heyburn Park, Kellyville, Oklahoma

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $10.00
Overall Rating:

The last five miles driving to this remote COE park are on roads so bad we were surprised nothing fell off. Those with larger motorhomes be aware there is a 12 ton limit bridge on the W151st St access road. There is minimal signage to help you find the park. Perhaps they could replace the one used for shotgun practice. The park is tired and worn, sites are not level and the run down trailer with the vicious chained pit bull right in the middle of everything is more reminiscent of a junk yard than a campground. There are dead trees throughout the park and this place really needs maintenance. But this is a Corps park so there are water views and the price is right. The hookups worked fine and while there is no WiFi the Verizon signal is strong. Despite the bargain we would not stay here again. We camped at Heyburn Park in a Motorhome.

St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park, Saint Peters, Missouri

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

Fairly new city owned park on a lake. We were here three nights as a base for exploring the Saint Louis area. The 30 minute drive from here to the Saint Louis attractions was worthwhile since the campground had such a relaxed and rural feel. Sites are spacious and mostly level but newly planted trees have some years to grow before there will be any shade. No cable TV but every site here can get a satellite signal. Verizon signal good. Typical slower than molasses campground WiFi. Small but adequate laundry facility. Lots of activities for kids and a 5 mile paved path around the lake good for walking and cycling. The surprisingly good live music in the pavilion on Friday night was a nice bonus. We camped at St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park in a Motorhome.

Dam West Recreation Area COE, Carlyle, Illinois

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $9.00
Overall Rating:

Remote but beautiful COE park. Our electric only back in site was fully paved and shaded with a pond view behind. We were on a loop on the opposite side of the road from the main campground. Bathroom was dirty which was curious considering there were only three campers on the loop. The roads are easily navigable but the trees hung very low and brushed our roof all the way through the loop so go slow if your camper is tall. Could not get a WiFi signal. Verizon signal was good.
