Jolly Roger Travel Park, Marathon, Florida

Date of Stay: January, 2018 - $90.00
Overall Rating:

Would have given the park a higher rating except for the small spaces - but it's on an island so that's really to be expected. Very clean showers and restrooms and overall park is clean and well kept. Roads are in generally good condition. After all, this is just 4 months after Irma. Very nice social area at the water's edge. Pavillion where groups were gathered every night, spacious sitting area to watch the sunset or just sit by the beach. Seems like a lot of campers are here for the entire season. We were just here for 4 nights. About 6 miles to the shopping areas in Marathon, but easy road. As mentioned earlier, spaces are close together is the only negative. Would recommend the park and would stay here again. We camped at Jolly Roger Travel Park in a Motorhome.

Yacht Haven Park & Marina, Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Date of Stay: January, 2018 - $78.00
Overall Rating:

Was able to secure a last minute reservation in Jan for 4 nights after a mix-up at the KOA. That was a God-send. Park is adjacent to I-95 with a good amount of road noise. Turned the AC fan on at night and mitigated it. Park is built around a marina. Paid for a water-front site, but had one of the largest privately owned boats that I have ever seen parked at the dock immediately behind our RV, so no water view at all, though did have a boardwalk to walk on. Roads in this park are terrible. Speedbumps difficult to navigate in an RV and patholes galore, expecially on the road out of the park. Seem to be many permanent RVs in the park, though most in good condition. Convenient to interstates 95 and 75/595 and shopping is nearby. When exiting the park, can only turn right so going to the beaches requires a u-turn up the street. Overall, a satisfactory stay, but nothing to be excited about. Getting the last minute reservation was a savior though. We camped at Yacht Haven Park & Marina in a Motorhome.

Sonrise Palms RV Park, Cocoa, Florida

Date of Stay: January, 2018 - $54.00
Overall Rating:

Small park slightly off the main road but very close to I-95. Lots of traffic noise all times of day. Ran the AC fan at night and mitigated it. Dirt roads that are in good shape. Very nice and very clean restrooms and showers. It was the Jan 2108 winter chill while we were there and no heat in the bathrooms made them almost impossible to use. Sites are somewhat close. Quite a number of permanent RVs there, but no eyesores. About a 30 minute drive to the beach but mostly convenient to shopping. Sams Club just across the street. If you like pizza, go to Pavarotti's on Cocoa Beach. Will stay here again on our way home from Key West. We camped at Sonrise Palms RV Park in a Motorhome.

Rush-No-More RV Park & Campground, Sturgis, South Dakota

Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

Wide open field with hookups. If campground had been full, it would have been crowded. Gravel roads and sites, but in good condition. Close to I-90. Wi-fi was just OK and no cable TV. Bathroom in the laundry room was OK. The individual ones in the lower campground were randy. In the upper campground, they were OK, but a long way from the sites in the lower campground. We camped at Rush-No-More RV Park & Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Thought that there was more to do in Sturgis. Seems like much of the town shuts down if there is not a motorcycle event going on. The drive thru Spearfish Canyon was very nice and Deadwood is a fun visit.

Red Trail Campground, Medora, North Dakota

Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

Each site is a piece of dust and gravel with hookups. Not much they can do about it as the whole area is very dry. We asked for a 50 amp site, but got a 30 amp one and kept tripping the circuit breaker. Campground is within walking distance of downtown Medora which is kind of cute and quaint. Sites are short an close together. However, the only alternative in the area is in Roosevelt Park with no facilities. For a couple of nights, it was OK. We camped at Red Trail Campground in a Motorhome.

Definitely take the loop road at Roosevelt National Park. The Medora Musical was a lot of fun. Variety of music, patriotic, clean and funny comedy. The gospel brunch was just OK.

Pine Grove RV Park and Campground, Greenwood, Nebraska

Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $37.00
Overall Rating:

Nice park between Omaha and Lincoln, but nothing close by. Just off I-80. Gravel roads and sites in pretty good condition. On exiting the park, about 6 speed bumps. Some are angled that make the RV twist and turn. Don't know why they build them that way. Bathrooms are in very good condition. Plumbing is old, but new tile floors and showers. Overall good condition. Full hookups, but no cable TV. Can pick up a number of channels on antenna. Picnic table at site. Overall good spot to stay. We camped at Pine Grove RV Park and Campground in a Motorhome.

Tower Campground, Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Nice park just off I-29. Paved roads and sites. Roads are in just OK condition. Site in good condition. Most sites have at least some shade. Not great space between sites, but OK. Picnic table provided. No wi-fi or cable. Very clean bathrooms. Plumbing is very old, but bathrooms have been remodeled with new tile floors and showers. Overall very good condition. Entrance is on main drag just a few minutes from downtown. Make sure to visit Falls Park. Lots of shopping just a couple of miles down I-29. If you are coming from the north on I-29. get off at exit 80 and take the back roads around to the park. The road at the entrance has a median. If you are heading south and you get off at exit 79, you'll have to do a very tight u-turn. We camped at Tower Campground in a Motorhome.

Deer Creek Valley RV Park, Topeka, Kansas

Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $41.00
Overall Rating:

Booked 4 nights on the way home to NC from a trip to the Dakotas. Very nice park. Paved roads and sites, spacious sites with grass between, level sites, good bathrooms, convenient to I-70, full hookups with wi-fi and cable TV. There is a gate at the entrance with a code for night time access. Not sure why, seemed to be an OK neighborhood. Only complaint - not a tree for shade anywhere. Weather was warmer than we expected for mid-Sep. Expected that Topeka would be a more upscale town, but sadly the downtown area was totally dead on a Sat afternoon. Maybe everyone was at a college football game. Certainly recommend staying here, but not for 4 nights - not enough to do. We camped at Deer Creek Valley RV Park in a Motorhome.

Beacon RV Park, Saint Joseph, Missouri

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

Located just off major commercial road in St Joseph. Didn't look like much when we drove in. Quite a few long-term renters in the park. However, our site was very nice. It was actually a back-in site with another site immediately behind it, but since no one was in the other site, we could pull thru. Nicely shaded site with full hook ups. Not very wide - neighbors close by, but OK. Only 2 bathrooms. Like a residential bathroom with toilet, lavatory and shower all in one room. Clean. Did not shower there. Parking for our tow was on the road in front of our RV, not on the site. Not a great park, but not bad. We camped at Beacon RV Park in a Motorhome.

Not a lot to do in St Joseph. We were a little disappointed. The downtown retail area has been hollowed out by the big box stores and chains in the suburbs. Pony Express museum was interesting. There is a casino there if that interests you.

Mark Twain Cave Campground, Hannibal, Missouri

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

Campground convenient to Hannibal. Gravel roads and sites. Roads are full of potholes. Rained while we were there. Tried to wash the mud off our tow after we left and it was like concrete. Don't know what was on the gravel road, but it was a mess. Roads poorly maintained, gravel sites OK, grass not cut recently. Fair number of tent campers on the weekend including a scout troop. Mark Twain Cave at the site. OK but I thought expensive for what you got to see. I think that this operation is a cash cow that the owners are not putting much money back into the campground. Bathrooms were old, but OK. They seem to clean them in the prime shower time in the morning though. Not a bad place to camp, but certainly not luxurious. We camped at Mark Twain Cave Campground in a Motorhome.

Nearby Hannibal is a cute little town. Don't bother taking the riverboat tour. Goes only a short distance on the river and there really are no sites of significance to see from the river. Twain house and museum are interesting.

Whittington Woods Campground, Whittington, Illinois

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

Very nice park and a good stopping off point along I-64. A few miles south of the intersection with I-57, but not far. Conveniently located close to the Interstate. Lots of trees throughout the park. Very good gravel roads and good and level gravel sites. Full hook-ups, and some pull-thrus. Satellite bathroom is not air conditioned and is very old and in need of some significant remodeling. Main bathroom is modern and well-kept. Both bathrooms are clean. Huge park. Some sites on the lake. Overall, Whittington Woods is one of the more attractive parks that we have stayed in. Update the satellite bathroom and it would be an A+. We camped at Whittington Woods Campground in a Motorhome.

Louisville South KOA, Shepherdsville, Kentucky

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $63.00
Overall Rating:

Park is about 20 miles south of Louisville. Not very convenient for Louisville site seeing. Not far off I-65 with grocery and Wal Mart close by. The highest rated near by restaurants were Cracker Barrel and Big Boy. Not a fine dining location. Spacious grounds. Some sites are very close together. Gravel roads and gravel sites, reasonably well-maintained. Site was not completely level, but leveling jacks handled it OK. Restrooms and showers were old but clean. Overall an OK stay. Wish that Louisville had more campground choices. We camped at Louisville South KOA in a Motorhome.

Kentucky Horse Park Campground, Lexington, Kentucky

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $39.00
Overall Rating:

Located just outside Lexington, KY. The park has beautiful grounds. Be sure and go over to the museum and track that is a part of the park but a little distance away from the campground. Paved roads and sites. 50 amp but no sewer, but a dump station. Sites not completely level but leveling jacks handled it OK. Bathrooms and showers are old but cleaned every day and in good condition. Definitely recommended if in the area. We camped at Kentucky Horse Park Campground in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Nice state park just off I-75. Nice grounds. Paved roads and gravel sites. Sites not completely level, bu leveling jacks handled it OK. Our pull-thru was a jug handle site. Very long rigs (we are 35') might have trouble navigating the entry and exit. Bathrooms are old, but clean and nice. Certainly recommended if you are in the area. Overall Rating:

Nice park just a short hop off I-85. Not much around in the area. Salisbury is about 15 miles down the road. Lots of good restaurants and shopping. Well-maintained gravel roads and sites. Lots of space between sites with trees and shrubbery separating most sites. Sites not completely level, but leveling jacks handled it well. Very clean and well maintained restrooms and showers. Certainly a good spot to stay if you are through the area. We camped at Cross Winds Family Campground in a Motorhome.
