Keuka Lake State Park, Keuka Park, New York

Date of Stay: September, 2016 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

We like this park for its proximity to wineries and the beach area in the park. What makes it extra special is the layout of the sites. Each site is surrounded by a hedgerow that provides separation from adjacent sites for a private experience. We camped at Keuka Lake State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Don't miss visiting the wineries that surround Keuka Lake, and if your visit includes a Saturday, try to stop by the Windmill shops just east of the lake for a unique shopping experience. There is a great grocery/souvenir/antique store just west of the park entrance at the corner of the main intersection in Branchport, and larger chain stores a little further away to the east in Penn Yan. A very nice restaurant is right across the street in the Esperanza Mansion, and many more are in Penn Yan.

Assateague State Park, Berlin, Maryland

Date of Stay: May, 2016 - $34.00
Overall Rating:

Sites are paved asphalt and generally level, surrounded by grassy sand with many prickly pear cactus mixed in. No trees, very open layout. Very windy while we were there, and the open layout did nothing to slow down the winds. Only one loop has electric, and we were not in that loop. A pack of wild horses made a daily visit to the campground. The major downside: ticks. They were everywhere. We had to remove several from our bodies each day, and even found them after we returned home. We camped at Assateague State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Only a ten minute ride from Ocean City. Lots of seafood (especially crab) restaurants in the area, even on the road into the park area.

Fort Chiswell RV Park, Max Meadows, Virginia

Date of Stay: April, 2016 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

The perfect park for the northern overnighter on the way to/from points south. For us, it's halfway between home (Buffalo) and the Florida state line, so it's a great location to stop. The full hookups allowed us to re-winterize the rig before we departed. Highly rated bathrooms by Good Sam, but one of the toilet seats was missing in the Men's room during our stay. (?) Very large and mostly level pull-through sites for big rigs. They want the picnic tables to stay on the concrete pad next to the site, which for us would have made it difficult to get the table under our awning. Since we were only staying one night and didn't deploy the awning, it wasn't really an issue for us. In a valley surrounded by cattle and sheep pastures on the hills on three sides of the park. Peaceful and perfect for an overnight stay. We camped at Fort Chiswell RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Little Talbot State Park, Jacksonville, Florida

Date of Stay: April, 2016 - $14.00
Overall Rating:

Unbelievably beautiful foliage in this park, but that beauty comes with narrow passage on the bumpy roads in the campground. Big rigs need not apply. Our 26' fifth wheel made it, but larger (especially taller) rigs would have difficulty. We stayed one night on the way south, and liked the park so much, we booked two nights during our return trip. We enjoyed that stay so much, we then booked a two week stay next spring. I think that says it all. We camped at Little Talbot State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

We spent our day at the beach, which was uncrowded and very wide. Had a nice dinner at the Sandollar, which is on the river and only a five minute drive south from the park entrance.

Long Key State Park (Closed temporarily), Long Key, Florida

Date of Stay: April, 2016 - $43.00
Overall Rating:

We spent a wonderful two weeks in an oceanside site (all sites in this park are oceanside). Our site was rather narrow, and if we had slides we would not have had room to fully deploy our awning. Since we don't have slides, the only problem the site presented was a tight squeeze to back the rig in. Other sites seemed to be wider, so it will be luck of the draw for you, since reservations are so difficult to procure. Once in place, we had a great time. The ocean is shallow and calm in this area, but the beach is covered with seaweed, which the park demands remain in place to preserve the natural ecosystem. We still managed to have room for chairs even at high tide. One discouraging note was the presence of rats after dark. One night we were sitting next to the picnic table after eating dinner, and watched as a bold rat climbed onto the table only five feet from our chairs and checked out our empty dinner plates. Other nights, the rats were seen running along the fence rails and in the trees. This is the only reason the park didn't get five stars for cleanliness, since the bath houses and rest of the areas were impeccably clean. We camped at Long Key State Park (Closed temporarily) in a Fifth Wheel.

Town Mountain Travel Park, Hendersonville, North Carolina

Date of Stay: March, 2016 - $37.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed one night on the way to Florida in late March. The restrooms were still winterized, so I can't comment on them. They said they usually don't open them until mid-April due to threat of frost. The park is very small, and most of the sites seemed to be occupied by seasonal patrons. Only way to turn the rig around was by using the site itself. Very friendly and helpful owners that live on site. We had to reserve our site by mailing a check for payment in full, so that seemed a little old fashioned. It fit our needs perfectly, since we had family that lived only a mile from the park, and the full hookups allowed us to un-winterize the rig on the way south. Close to the interstate, but far enough away where traffic noise was non-existent. We camped at Town Mountain Travel Park in a Fifth Wheel.
