Golden Coach RV Park, Cromberg, California

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

The best asset of this park is the staff! Wonderful people who really go out of their way to make sure you have everything you need to have a great time. We were lucky to arrive on a night that they were having a benefit for the Horses Unlimited program for autistic children, so we enjoyed a great meal and two piece band for a great cause! We also were lucky enough to win a couple raffle prizes as well!

The second best asset of this park is the trees! Shade everywhere. The sites are mostly dirt with gravel, but ours was very level. After the weekend the place emptied out to about 1/4 capacity. They have a giant communal fire pit that looked amazing, but no one else was using it so we saved our s'mores for when we got home. The dog park is small (32'x16'), and all dirt, but adequate. Leash rule is very strictly enforced (which is a great thing). Park was always very quiet and relaxing, and if you don't feel like cooking they have a very quaint cafe/store on site that serves breakfast and lunch except on Tuesdays. Satellite TV was a total of 5 channels, 8 if you can do digital.

So why the 7 rating? Two things that were tough for us. While the park is surrounded by things to do and neat towns to explore, everything but hiking is a several miles away, so if you don't have a tow vehicle or a toad you need to break camp if you want to do anything outside the park. The Feather River is only 1/2 mile away by satellite map, but because of the private property in between you must drive several miles to enjoy it.

But by far the biggest deal breaker for us was the fact that cell service is nonexistent (Verizon, at least), and the Internet was as bad as it gets to still be able to call it "available." For my DW that has her own business, and myself that sadly depends on Internet while away from work, we just wouldn't be able to stay here again.

If you want great hospitality and a quiet shady non-connected experience, this is the place for you! We camped at Golden Coach RV Park in a Motorhome.

Clio's Rivers Edge RV Park, Clio, California

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $50.00
Overall Rating:

Rate reflects a "preferred" full hookup 30 amp site which was very large and 50' away from our closest neighbor. All sites looked very roomy with plenty of shade. Very nice staff and escort to our very level site. Free wifi worked very well with 1MB and could be upgraded to 6MB for $10 per day or $20 per week. Connection was supposed to be for 24 hours, but we found ourselves having to re-connect several times per day (no big deal). Fenced dirt dog run was great for the dogs ($2 each per dog per day) and kids park was nice and well kept. Fishing just off of our site was nice and convenient, but the tadpoles were larger than the fish we caught (others had better luck with some keepers). Park was always quiet with a nice breeze blowing through the very tall and plentiful trees. All streets were paved and all sites were gravel with a large concrete patio and sturdy metal and plastic picnic table. They also had "Easter eggs" hidden around the park that if found could be turned in at the office for a toy surprise. Free ice cream for the kids on Saturdays! We will be back! We camped at Clio's Rivers Edge RV Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Plumas Eureka State Park was a nice way to spend a couple of hours (kids can pan for gold in their special trough all day for $4). Graeagle golf (miniature and driving range $5 each) was nice with a nice cold shake, sundae or frosty afterwards at Graeagle Frostee right next door. Mohawk tavern is a favorite stop for an adult beverage. Some of the best golfing in the West is within 20 miles of this park. You can easily spend a week here and play a different spectacular course every day!

Ely KOA, Ely, Nevada

Date of Stay: June, 2016 - $47.00
Overall Rating:

Very friendly and helpful staff at check in, had lots of good area information and even gave each of our dogs a treat bag! Fenced pet area with half grass and a picnic table to observe. Good play area for the kids and many of the sites (ours included) have brand new fire pits. Huge store with plenty of necessities and souvenirs. We were only there for one night, but wish we could have stayed longer and enjoyed the area. TV was off-air from Ely, but we got plenty of good channels with our antennae. All other services worked great except for the WiFi which was a little more finicky. May work good on a laptop, but my iPhone kept losing signal. If they would have had a pool it would have been a home run! We camped at Ely KOA in a Motorhome.

Whispering Elms Campground, Baker, Nevada

Date of Stay: June, 2016 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed overnight (no reservation) to visit Great Basin and Lehman Caves, and as others have said, the main attraction at this park is the full hookups (which worked great) and the location to the parks. They have a small motel as well if you are traveling with the in-laws! WiFi was hit and miss, but they did have a nice bar (which doubles as the park office until around 8 PM). If you arrive after hours you can check yourself in at the info board. If you want to see the area sites this was a great stop. We camped at Whispering Elms Campground in a Motorhome.

Ranger Mark gave a great tour at Lehman Caves! We booked a 60 minute because of the dogs, but book the 90 minute if you can!

Steamboat Springs KOA, Steamboat Springs, Colorado

Date of Stay: June, 2016 - $48.00
Overall Rating:

Booked 3 nights to visit friends in the area, and made the mistake of reserving an individual site ($5 extra charge) without seeing it or talking to the local park staff. When we arrived it was raining and many of the sites were muddy or had standing water (ours had very little grass and lots of mud, but at least no standing water). Not the park's fault, but we went to the office and asked for one with more grass so our dogs ($18 additional charge) would not track mud into our home. The staff was very polite but said they could not move us, even though there were two sites next to us that were vacant and had more grass, as they had people moving in. I wouldn't even mention this, but you guessed it...we never saw another person in either site all three days! Very frustrating! The WiFi was almost unusable but they are up-front about this fact and tell you this in advance. The pool was small and cold but they say it is heated. The proximity to downtown Steamboat Springs is great, as it is just 2 miles away, and the KOA store was one of the best I have seen, with plenty to choose from. The mini golf was nice, and the tent area looked amazing! The river was running really fast so I would hate to see a small unattended child get close. We didn't see anyone fishing, but one of the staff said they usually do pretty good there. The bathrooms were pretty good, but my wife said the ladies floor always had a lot of water. Over 50 TV channels and they came in clear. I saw plenty of employees working hard to make improvements around the park, and everyone we talked to was friendly and courteous. We camped at Steamboat Springs KOA in a Motorhome.

If you like BBQ try Steamboat Smokehouse right on the main drag and next to a great gelato shop. Fantastic wings and cheese curds and the brisket melted in our mouths! Nice bar as well!

Mountain Valley RV Resort, Heber City, Utah

Date of Stay: June, 2016 - $48.00
Overall Rating:

Beautiful and well kept and gated park with plenty to do for kids! Very friendly staff, fully stocked store, and an escort to our site. They have a nice game room with plenty of board games and ping pong, plus a wonderful lounge with a huge TV to sit around and talk about your day. The pool was sparkling, and if it hadn't been for the sideways rain on the day we were there we would have jumped right in. The restrooms/showers were spotless, and all individual (there must be at least 20 of them). Great cable with 81 good quality channels. Dog run was a favorite for us as it was fully fenced and all grass. Our only regret was that we were just there for an overnight and not a week! We camped at Mountain Valley RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Coachland RV Park, Truckee, California

Date of Stay: June, 2016 - $62.00
Overall Rating:

Nice clean park with very friendly staff. Rate was for 50 amp site during Memorial Day weekend and $5.00 online reservation fee. Sites were very close together and park was completely full for the holiday weekend, but surprisingly quiet and peaceful. Requested a late checkout but they could not accommodate due to incoming reservations. Site was level and very clean. Nice park for the kids, and a nice open area (not fenced) for the dogs. 116 TV channels including HD channels. Could log onto the wifi network, but it was unusable. Verizon LTE worked great. We camped at Coachland RV Park in a Motorhome.

Visit downtown Truckee if you have a chance. Squeeze Inn and Bar of America are great, and so are the local shops.
