Davidson River Campground, USFS, Brevard, North Carolina

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

There is NO WATER at the site. But, you can fill up your fresh water tank just to the left as you pull in. The front staff are unbelievable and truly love their jobs. They staffed the front gate, I believe, 24 hours. We were passing through from Myrtle Beach and stayed one night. We loved this place so much that we are going to stay two nights next year. The bike/hiking path is awesome and runs right along the river. Easy access to grocery stores, Dolly's ice cream and quite a few restaurants if you aren't cooking. The bathhouses are small. In the sycamore loop, there is only one shower for each sex and one bathroom stall. It could be different in other loops. The water thing was strange for us, but we knew ahead of time and were only staying the one day. We actually didn't have a plug in the bottom of our freshwater tank, so we weren't able to fill and it was actually fine. We used the bathhouse and bought jugs of water at the grocery for drinking. This place is so beautiful, I really recommend. We camped at Davidson River Campground, USFS in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

If you're up for some adventure, drive up to sliding rocks. It's a waterfall that you can slide down like a water slide. The water at the bottom is freezing, it's easy to get out and lifeguards are there until 6pm. It's $2 per person to slide but you can go for as long as you want. We ALWAYS stop here on our way back home. Also, you have to try the ice cream at Dolly's. You'll pass it on your way in.

Apple Valley Travel Park, Hendersonville, North Carolina

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $27.00
Overall Rating:

This park is mostly residents with a few transient spots. We stayed here the sat night before the 4th of July as we were driving through to Myrtle Beach. The boys loved the pool table and we were fortunate enough to be staying the night of their 4th of July potluck. I really enjoyed this. We got there a bit late to cook anything, but brought chips per the advice at the desk. The lady I spoke with could not have been more friendly. She called me a week or so before we were coming to confirm our reservation, then called the day of to see what time we would be there since they were having the potluck. For us, it was a perfect stop since it was close to the interstate. We camped at Apple Valley Travel Park in a Travel Trailer.

Lakewood Camping Resort, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $80.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed at this park three years ago and when we went back this year for our family vacation, we really wondered why we haven't been coming back. The pool and water park slides are great. Nice lazy river, excellent beach access. The gift shop is a great size and everything is really reasonably priced. My son didn't pack swim trunks and I was able to get him a pair of board shorts in the shop for $12. This was our first visit over the fourth of July and we decided to keep coming back over this week. There are great 4th activities, including an awesome parade. The golf carts tend to fly through the campground, but that's probably true at any large campground. I really recommend block 1, directly across from beach access. We were 8 sites back from the beach on 14th street and it was perfect. We were a bit of a hike from the pool, so I think next year we will request around 10th street. We camped at Lakewood Camping Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

For pizza, check out Ultimate California Pizza or Surfside pizza. The Fish trailer located in the campground is awesome. It's all you can eat for $10, $6 for kids, and includes a drink. It's only open certain days, though.

Louisville South KOA, Shepherdsville, Kentucky

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $77.00
Overall Rating:

The park is very well maintained and clean. KOAs are always a little pricey, but the programming this weekend was Hawaiian weekend and my boys got to learn to hula dance and there were appetizers and free water/capri suns. It was really cute and the staff was very friendly.

Back-in spaces seemed to have more room. Our pull-through was very convenient and easy to park/level but was narrow.

Our boys rented the banana bikes and had a great time. There was a lot of room to ride them on the paved roads in the campground. The jumping pillow was great but the boys got pretty dirty. It had been raining a lot so that's probably why. I ran both mornings...the campground is pretty big so the outer loop, including the tent lane, is 1.5 miles. There are also nature trails, but it had been raining so I didn't chance it. Pool is open 9am to 9pm and was very clean and warm. Overall, we had a really great weekend. We camped at Louisville South KOA in a Travel Trailer.

I love this campground! The sites are level, it's right by the lake and it's absolutely beautiful! Not to mention full hookups at a state park! The closest site to the water is 18, second closest is 20. We camped at Paintsville Lake Campgrounds in a Travel Trailer.

Pipestem Resort State Park, Pipestem, West Virginia

Date of Stay: June, 2016 - $34.00
Overall Rating:

This is a really beautiful place. We stayed on site 15 which was very nice, but beware, we had to buy an additional 20 ft long sewer hose to reach the sewer hookup as it was at the front of the site by the road. As the site slanted a bit downhill from the hookup, I am sure you can imagine the rest. It was tough. I didn't see this issue on any of the other sites. The back-in sites are very well shaded. Great big loops for walking in the evenings. Each site has a trashcan mounted on a pole with a bag which is changed out each morning by the campground staff. The downside of Pipestem Resort is that as a camper, you pay for everything. Pool is $3, mini golf is $4 each, disc golf is $3 each. The remote control tracks (one paved, one dirt with jumps!) is free. Overall we had a great time. The pool is pretty cold, so get ready :) The sewer issue is why I am giving it a 9. Otherwise, a 10. We camped at Pipestem Resort State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

It's about 25 min drive to Kroger/Walmart, so be sure to stock up on your way in!

Check out Sandstone Falls, The Market Restaurant (Hinton), Lynn's drive-in restaurant (Bluefield). The disc golf course is awesome. Also really enjoyed mini-golf. It's cool at night, even in the summer, so pack a jacket. The tram is AWESOME but costs $6 per person. Kids are $4. We bought day fishing licenses so we could fish the area.
