Maumelle COE, Little Rock, Arkansas

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $10.00
Overall Rating:

Had a quick 2-night stay while we were in town for the Miss Arkansas Pageant (our friend was a contestant). Love the sites in section A, right near marina with the big boats, easy access to river. No sewer on sites except those reserved for UAMS Medical Staff in the center of the loop. Other loops farther downriver are excellent too, and close to restroom/showers. Pick your more open spots next to river (with good shade trees and covered picnic tables) or up in the deeper woods with tons of shade. Great walking thru camping and park areas. Nice asphalt sites. Clean, so clean. Nice paved roads throughout park. Love Maumelle. Want to come back and explore serious fishing on Arkansas River. We camped at Maumelle COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Love the river access. GEESE everywhere though, so watch your step while walking. Right now the road to Maumelle between AR10 (Cantrell) and the park is under repair in places. You have single lanes to negotiate, and the road is rather bumpy, but we made it fine. Just be aware, and when the work is done, it will be so much better.

Lake Charles State Park, Powhatan, Arkansas

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

Loved our stay, although some rain kept us in the camper playing cards! We had a lakeside site, #75, right by the Mulberry Tree, which was full of ripening fruit. In the tree we watched red-headed woodpeckers, bluejays, mockingbirds, orioles, and fletchers feeding. Plus the squirrels. They all learned to hang upside down to feed. Great entertainment. Fishing was not so great, and no one else caught much either. We camped at Lake Charles State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Parkers Crossroads RV Park and Campground, Yuma, Tennessee

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $31.00
Overall Rating:

Although rates were a little high, I counted the value as excellent because the park is so nice and located near some really good history. PLUS the staff was super nice and helpful; escorted to our site, questions answered and help offered. Had a hot water heater go out, and staff gave me guidance. They repair and wash RVs here too. Very helpful and knowledgeable staff. Our site was excellent, great view of pond and grassy field. We camped at Parkers Crossroads RV Park and Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Shiloh National Park about 30-40 minutes south; historic area. I want to return here as we travel out again in fall as a stop on our way to VA, and take a few days to explore the area and soak in some history. Had ancestors who fought at Shiloh in Civil War.

Baileyton RV Park, Greeneville, Tennessee

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

Great park for quick stop. Stayed here on route back home, one night. Fairly close quarters, but friendly staff. Some trees quite close on corners for parking and departure...felt like I needed to back out of site next morning to avoid scraping RV sides. We camped at Baileyton RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Carolina Beach State Park, Carolina Beach, North Carolina

Date of Stay: April, 2017 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

Okay, no doubt about it, we would stay here again. First time camping near a beach, and this was near enough. Great park with good hiking trails, access to Cape Fear River at Marina. Had kayaks, but chose to spend time at beach and fishing off piers at Kure Beach a few miles south. Two loops in campground, with a few cabins between. Full hookup on site #004 was our choice, and had plenty of room to park, and much space between sites. Enjoyed our stay immensely and wanted to stay longer (but headed to VA for Shenandoah River). Biking only allowed on roads, not trails. But nice ride to marina and back got our exercise in. Nature lovers rejoice, as this campground displays various levels of coastal region habitats. Carnivorous plants indigenous here. STAFF was so helpful, friendly, informative. Great people at marina and park office. Be aware, park closes at 9:00 during this season (I think 10:00 pm in busy season) so you may be facing a locked gate if you return late. We camped at Carolina Beach State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Park closes at 9:00 pm (in off season) and 10:00 pm (peak seasons). Number to call after these hours should you not make it back is posted at the Marina. I had to walk in one night after fishing on pier till dark, and get help getting back in. Got a five day non-resident fishing license, and now wish I had fished harder in the Cape Fear River, rather than off pier at Kure. However, saw some great blues caught off the pier, and that kept me there. Nice picnic area near the marina.

Little Tallapoosa Park, Carrollton, Georgia

Date of Stay: April, 2017 - $26.00
Overall Rating:

Loved this quiet little park, not far from I-20, and a state park well maintained and being developed. Park about 7 years old, but still expanding. GREAT paved trails down to Little Tallapoosa, shaded hiking. Sites were fairly open, and several pull thru sites. We had a good site, #13. Some sites are reserved for Motor Homes only. We camped at Little Tallapoosa Park in a Fifth Wheel.

What a great place. Above the South Fork of the Shenandoah River, near historic Luray with beautiful Caverns. Clean, friendly staff, great views of valley and mountains. Full hookup sites and primitive sites. Trails along river and around fields. Rained 1st two days hard so river was not navigable w my kayak skills. Lake Charles State Park, Powhatan, Arkansas

Date of Stay: December, 2016 - $17.00
Overall Rating:

Great stay... day after Christmas we were the only ones here. I had a reenactment keelboat trip down the Black River for three days and set up wife here to retrieve me at Jacksonport after my trip. Lake is drawn down during winter months to flood Shirey Bay for duck season, so fishing not good now. But a great fishing lake rest of year. 2nd stay this year as it is 1 hour plus to kids in Jonesboro. We camped at Lake Charles State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Village Creek State Park, Wynne, Arkansas

Date of Stay: October, 2016 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

Our favorite Arkansas State Park. Loved this site, we were in full hookup section #60, in the first loop to left. Sister and family and friends came on weekend and we had the whole loop to ourselves. Nice group setting. Quiet during week, but full weekends during fall months. Went to Cowboy Church & outdoor breakfast in Equestrian campsite around the bend on Sunday. Had good friends with us the whole two weeks. Hiking, kayaking, biking were excellent. Geocaches fun, tho we found those on earlier trips. Parking in our site was perfect, room for two vehicles even after parking RV. We camped at Village Creek State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Geocaching great. Hiking and kayaking fun. BTW, NO service with AT&T, but those with Verizon had a signal. We loved the disconnect, actually, tho we drove to Wynne (happy hour at Sonic) to check for messages from family (and facebook).

Activities abundant, they have a great Ranger and staff and programs were always offered. Had a star night observation group from Memphis Astronomical Society with large telescopes and fun skygazing.

Love this park, as it is only 15 minutes from the only grandchild! We stayed here March 2016 for the first time, site 14, on lakeside. Stayed again in September 2016 for 7 days as last stop on a 4 site trip (site 26, top of hill). Stayed here again as 2nd stop on a 2 site trip (site 13 lakeside). We like the people, we like the ability to drop gray water. No sewer hookups but a easy dump station at camp exit. We camped at Craighead Forest Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Okay...fouhd a jewel here right in our own state. No, no sewer hookups, but what great sites and clean camp. Constant maintenance on grounds. Friendly helpful staff. We got a riverside site and loved it. Camp has lots of areas to walk and ride bikes. I kayaked into Murray Lake (alongside Arkansas River) and enjoyed it.

Foggy on several mornings, but last morning clear. River valley has a bit of fog this time of year. Enjoyed this relaxing site and will be back. We camped at Maumelle COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Bucksaw Campground COE, Clinton, Missouri

Date of Stay: September, 2016 - $10.00
Overall Rating:

Great stay at this campground. We were not right on the water, so had to drive to tent area to put kayaks in. But fished and saw eagles, osprey, and kingfishers fishing--who did better than I did. Great lake, nice site, good accommodations.

Easy park. Area C was a good loop and most have sewer-but not all. One section in C was tent only. Some loops closed (maybe for season?). Only some sites in Area A have sewer. B I think have none. Still, great campground. Swimming area with sandy shore (wouldn't call it a beach).

We will be back. We camped at Bucksaw Campground COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Devil's Den State Park, West Fork, Arkansas

Date of Stay: September, 2016 - $17.00
Overall Rating:

Loved this park. An older park, but sites were well kept and clean. We camped right by Lee Creek, section E, and we had lots of shade. A bit of a challenge getting our 40+ foot fifth wheel backed into the site between big cedars in order to leave room for slide-outs. Nonetheless...Loved this camp and park. Walked the Yellow Rock trail one morning early. Beautiful 2-1/2 hr hike.

To park I had to park just off road sideways. However, there are longer sites on the inside of the loop that would have been fine.

Big cedars beside pad. I had to squeeze in, lay out a marker, to get room on both sides for my slides. I had 4 inches on one side, 3 inches on the other once my slides were out. We camped at Devil's Den State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Nature center really nice. Lots of info and interactivity. Docks, piers into lake nice walking areas. Great fishing right off bank of lake. Marina nearby. Within 20-25 miles two other great Arkansas State Parks: Mt Nebo (wonderful mountain hiking trails, with views of Lake Dardnelle below), and Mt Magazine (more mountain trails, great lodge). Worth a long enough stay to enjoy the area.
