Buffalo Gap Campground USFS, Medora, North Dakota

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $6.00
Overall Rating:

For a forest service campground, they take lousy care of their trees. They are overgrown into the road and hang way too low to clear our motorhome or probably any fifth wheeler. We were able to back up the one way road into the end site and that worked. Otherwise we would not have stayed. The park is convenient and at $6 is not bad, considering there are zero services except water is available. The sites are generally small but some are large enough for our 40ft motorhome or a large RV. They are not at all level, however, and some have pretty bad slopes unless you are tent camping or in a very small rig. The pad surface is very poorly done and won't take any weight beyond stabilizers without some large boards or other devices to really spread the weight. I've boondocked for free with better campsites. We camped at Buffalo Gap Campground USFS in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

See Theodore Roosevelt National Park. We found a lot better scenery and more wildlife in the north section than the south section near this campground. Find a place to camp closer to the north end. It's a 76 mile trip one way to the north unit.

Indian Shores Camping Resort, Woodruff, Wisconsin

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $71.00
Overall Rating:

Interesting park with a mix of "RV Resort" type users (both mini-homes and RV units) and rentals. Price was higher than many campgrounds, but we were there at the height of the summer vacation season so it was reasonable for the area and the season. Sites are narrow and not the easiest to get into, with somewhat narrow streets, but manageable even for our 40 ft. motor home. The area is heavily wooded so each site is well isolated from its neighbor. Site was level and with full hookups. The cable wire had been pulled out of the box and not functional, but we didn't come here for the TV so we ignored it. Only one station available via antenna. Verizon service sucked, with 4G around town and out by the road but not in the camp ground. Our AT&T hot spot, however, worked well for 4G data service. One weird thing is that they have renamed their road to Camp Stronghorn and that shows on some maps, but NOT in the USPS database or in their official site identification plate or the road sign off of WI 47 or in all GPS systems. It is still Indian Shores Road by signage and in the USPS database for ZIP codes . Being full timers, we have our mail forwarded and use Amazon a lot and this turned out to be a royal pain. The Camp Stronghorn Road is NOT recognized by the Postal Service, UPS or Fed Ex as a valid address, and the counter staff is oblivious to the fact that it doesn't work, even though they admit to having several complaints about it not working. We camped at Indian Shores Camping Resort in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

It's a summer resort town with a series of interconnected lakes, accessible from Lake Tomahawk at the resort. The main attractions are the water with fishing, boating, etc. The lakes seemed busy but not over crowded even on the week of July 4. We came to be with family and found the atmosphere very congenial for family activities, with water related events primary. There are good restaurants in the area and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the North Woods of Wisconsin.

Holland State Park, Holland, Michigan

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $11.00
Overall Rating:

This is an older state park and it shows. The roads are terribly narrow and parking is allowed right beside the road making maneuvering in a large motorhome very difficult. We got in, but not sure if we can get out or if I have to back out the way we came. The site is about as un-level as any I have ever seen. And the soil is very sandy so using the levelers is not going to work with something this heavy. It is a really bad way to sit; thank heaven we only planned on spending one night. Really, the road side stop we were in a bit down the road would have been better. Trees are not trimmed to allow for easy passage or parking. They are well below the 14 feet clearance needed for some vehicles. We camped at Holland State Park in a Motorhome.

Hi-Way Haven RV Park, Sutherlin, Oregon

Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

Interesting RV park with a working drive in movie screen. When we were there they were only showing movies on Friday and Saturday night, but we left on Friday morning so can't say how well that worked. They have a nice double sided fenced off leash dog area which is quite large. Too bad it's been so very dry that there was no live grass there, but still quite nice. One "extra" is that you can wash your car for $5 and the RV for $7. Too bad more parks don't offer that. It's far more convenient and cheaper than going through most coin operated car wash places. We camped at Hi-Way Haven RV Park in a Motorhome.

Oregon Trail RV Park, Irrigon, Oregon

Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

This is a relatively new (4th year) campground with a nice layout, excellent grass beside the sites, paved roads, and a super lady running it. She goes out of her way to help and be gracious to guests. She even suggested we go into the space "backwards" to face the river instead of into the park itself. Across the road is an excellent park/ball field area with watered grass which is in excellent shape. This was a great place to exercise the dogs, even though the park doesn't have a designated dog area. We will stay here again if we are back in the area. We camped at Oregon Trail RV Park in a Motorhome.

C Lazy Moose RV Park, Salcha, Alaska

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

This park has just changed owners, and needs some TLC for the overall esthetics, but is clean, and in good functional condition. It has a small laundry area, but then it's a small park. It is about 50 miles from Fairbanks. Location is right beside a swiftly running river, but there is no particular access to the river itself. We stayed here because of the full hookups and there isn't much else on this side of Fairbanks. The owners are very friendly, personable, and helpful. And they have great ice cream for an extra treat in the evening. We will definitely stay again given the opportunity. We camped at C Lazy Moose RV Park in a Motorhome.

Dick's RV Park, Great Falls, Montana

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $41.00
Overall Rating:

This is a super nice park. The sites are wide as are the roads. The staff is very helpful and courteous. This is one of the few parks that allows vehicle washing (for an extra fee). We're just passing through on the way to Alaska, but this would be a good place to spend an extra day or two. We camped at Dick's RV Park in a Motorhome.

Billings KOA, Billings, Montana

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $52.00
Overall Rating:

This is the original KOA campground (per sign in their office), and some of that shows. First, the campground is very well maintained. There are nice amenities here. The staff was courteous and helpful. That's the good news. The bad news is that for this price it does NOT include full hookups. Water and electric only for what is a very high price tag. The other issue is that the park was clearly laid out when RVs were much smaller. The sites are practically on top of each other, the roads are very narrow, and navigation in a 40 foot motorhome towing is difficult. We just fit into a space with no room to spare on either end. The couple across the street moved out first, so it was easier to get out but we had to drive into their space to do so. We camped at Billings KOA in a Motorhome.

Coldwater Creek RV Park, Marble Falls, Texas

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $23.00
Overall Rating:

This park clearly caters to full time, long term residents. If you have pets, there is very little grassy area and no play area for them so you walk in the street. The sites are extremely not level. I had to put 6 inches of blocks under the jacks to get level and the tires were 6 inches off the ground at that. And the trees are not trimmed back far enough for a big rig with slides. The real kicker is that if you stay for a day (after your first month) they do NOT prorate the month when you leave but want you to pay the full month's rent. If that were clear up front it might be OK, but not if you tell me that when giving 2 weeks notice that we are leaving. Buyer be ware. We camped at Coldwater Creek RV Park in a Motorhome.
