River Ranch RV Resort, Lake Wales, Florida

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $70.00
Overall Rating:

We enjoy staying at River Ranch. Since each site is individually owned, each is unique and generally all are far superior in quality to the average campground site. The prices at all the amenities operated by Westgate Resort are on the expensive side. We also noticed that the maintenance of many of amenities areas appears to be slipping. Given that these areas are the primary attractions since nothing else is close-by, the declining up-keep of these areas is impacting the overall quality of the experience. We camped at River Ranch RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park, White Springs, Florida

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed here previously and once again enjoyed our return visit. Check-in very smooth at the front gate. No problem getting to our site. There was standing water in the forested area behind our site due to recent rains, but no increase in normal Florida mosquito activity so not an issue. Sites are spacious and level. There is vegetation separating most sites which adds a welcome degree of privacy instead of having a view of the neighbor's rig. The park grounds are always fun to explore. The craft village wasn't open during our overnight visit since it was a weekday. We've never been disappointed in our visits to this park. We camped at Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park in a Motorhome.

A.H. Stephens Historic Park, Crawfordville, Georgia

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

As our previous review below mentions, the last time we stayed here was while evacuating due to Hurricane Irma. This time we were able to stay as part of a planned trip. This remains a very nice park. Sites had new grills that had been added since our last visit. There were only a couple other campers and the camp hosts, so we had almost the entire area to ourselves. However, each site is very spacious and level, so even when there are more campers, it's not cramped. While the staff was friendly, the only negative is that we were charged a vehicle entrance fee in addition to the camping fee we'd already paid online. Come on Georgia, the camping fee should include the admittance fee for the RV. We would absolutely stay here again. We camped at A.H. Stephens Historic Park in a Motorhome.

Wytheville KOA, Wytheville, Virginia

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $57.00
Overall Rating:

We originally reserved a "deluxe" site. Unfortunately, when we arrived we found that these sites were far too un-level for our rig -- the sites literally went uphill and were rather narrow. We ended up in a basic pull-through site but still had to pay for the "deluxe" site. The cable worked, however the wifi kept dropping in and out making it completely unusable. At least one camper had a dog running around off-leash that the staff did nothing about. The on-site pizza was good. The road leading into the campground was very narrow and would have been extremely difficult had there been another RV coming in the opposite direction. It's okay, but not entirely sure we'd stay here again. We camped at Wytheville KOA in a Motorhome.

Artillery Ridge Campground, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $60.00
Overall Rating:

The staff was friendly and generally helpful. However, the sites are literally on top of each other. The site we were assigned (E79) wasn't particularly level and had no shade what-so-ever. It was also right behind the main dumpster. At least while we were there, the campground was packed on the weekend. The camp store was well-stocked and useful. Good game room and playground for the kids, as well as a pool (didn't use it, but it seemed nice). Not a bad location for visiting Gettysburg, but we will likely check out other options on a return trip to the area. On a related note, we do not recommend the "Spirit of Gettysburg" attraction for which the campground gives free tickets. We thought the "fun house" approach to an event in which thousands of men died (Picket's Charge) was offensive to the memory of those soldiers on both sides who gave all. On the other hand, we HIGHLY recommend hiring one of the licensed battlefield guides for a personal tour of Gettysburg. The cost for our entire family to have a personal guide was less than the cost of going on a group tour. The tour was a highlight of our trip. We camped at Artillery Ridge Campground in a Motorhome.

Endless Caverns Resort, New Market, Virginia

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $48.00
Overall Rating:

The main parking lot for check-in was dangerously inclined for RVs -- when leaving check-in to follow the guide to our side at one point we felt like we were about to tip over. Check-in was fine and the staff friendly. However, the "pull-through" site we were assigned had a short steep incline off the pull-out side that would have bottomed out our rig. We ended up having to pull-in and back-out when we left. Despite what others have reported, we didn't think the sites were particularly level. We took a tour of the caverns which was a highlight of our entire trip and highly recommended. We camped at Endless Caverns Resort in a Motorhome.

WoodSmoke Campground, Unicoi, Tennessee

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $55.00
Overall Rating:

This is a very nice campground with incredibly nice staff. However, it is on the side of a mountain. The roads are very narrow, steep, and difficult to navigate -- leaving the park requires a hairpin turn onto a steeply inclined uphill road followed by a steep descent. The staff was very friendly and helped us navigate to and back into our site. Once situated, the campground itself is beautiful. A creek ran behind our site with a wooden bridge to cross over to the covered picnic area for our site. The views were also spectacular. Other than the difficulty of the roads inside the campground, it was a nice experience. We camped at WoodSmoke Campground in a Motorhome.

Andersonville City Park Campground, Andersonville, Georgia

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed here previously about two years ago. Unfortunately, we were not as happy with this campground as before. On the plus side they are in the process of putting in new electrical that (apparently) will include 50 amp service (we only use 30 amp). Also on the plus side a couple of the near-abandoned looking TTs that were at the park last time are now gone. One the negative side, the dirt roads in the campground still need major improvement. They wanted us to use site 1, but the rain had long ago washed out a huge gouge that made it impossible to back into the site with our rig. Also, the gnats were annoying to biblical plague proportions. Even worse, we woke up in the morning with an ant infestation on our rig. It's a great location for visiting the Andersonville National Historic Site and with even a little more work has great potential, but after this experience we'll likely hold off for awhile before returning. We camped at Andersonville City Park Campground in a Motorhome.

Colt Creek State Park, Lakeland, Florida

Date of Stay: March, 2018 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

We really wanted to like this park since it just opened and since we've enjoyed several other Florida state parks. Unfortunately, reality did not live up to expectations. As with every other Florida state park we have visited, the staff is friendly and helpful. The campground itself is about two miles from the main gate. The paving on the main park road ends shortly before reaching the campground. The rest of the road and the campground loop road are dirt. The main campground (dirt) road continues on to an equestrian area and campground at the back end of the park. Apparently almost no one visiting this park is aware of common courtesy when driving down a dirt road: drive slowly so as not to kick-up a cloud of dust. Instead, vehicles (mostly trucks pulling horse trailers longer than many fifth wheels) fly down the main road well above the posted speed limit kicking up immense clouds of dust which then float over into the campground. If you're in one of the sites backing the main road (sites 27, 29, 31) be prepared to eat dust your entire stay! The rangers unfortunately seem to do nothing about the speeding. While individual sites are gravel, clouds of dust also billow off the campground loop road from cars and the wind. All the dirt will be a muddy quagmire when it rains. Along with a lack of paving, there is no grassy area or play ground for kids. We wish they would have spent a little extra money to at least pave the main road to the campground entrance. This park could have been so much more. Perhaps the state will eventually invest a little more to help this campground achieve its potential. We camped at Colt Creek State Park in a Motorhome.

River Ranch RV Resort, Lake Wales, Florida

Date of Stay: December, 2017 - $80.00
Overall Rating:

River Ranch RV Resort is an ownership RV resort in the Westgate River Ranch resort development. While many owners leave their rigs permanently at their site, several others put their sites into the rental pool when they are not using them. Since each site is privately owned, each one is different in terms of set-up and layout, however all are first class. River Ranch RV Resort is co-located with the Westgate River Ranch Resort and Rodeo timeshare facility. Both are owned and operated by Westgate and form one integrated complex, but each is ran separately. Thus, when booking, make sure you have the correct location since the timeshare facility also offers RV sites, however they are "no frills" and lack sewer. Also, while owners and renters at River Ranch RV Resort can use the timeshare amenities on the property (including a petting zoo, "adventure park," marina, and full-service restaurant), they do not receive any discounts. While the rates here are expensive, the overall experience made it worth it. We definitely plan to return. We camped at River Ranch RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Keep in mind this resort is located in rural Polk County. Lake Wales is about 30 minutes or so away and is the closest town. If you need anything major beyond simple sundries carried in the on-site general store, get them before you arrive. The on-site restaurant was very good. Tried it a couple times and the food was good both times. Service was a little lacking the first time, but the server we had next time was spot-on.

Spartanburg NE / Gaffney KOA, Gaffney, South Carolina

Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed here while evacuating during Hurricane Irma. Staff very accommodating with last-minute request for a spot. Park seemed very nice with several activities available, however with the heavy wind and rain, didn't get a chance to explore too much. We thought the on-site pizza was very good and certainly very convenient with delivery to the site.

Sites tended to be close together, but pretty much par for campgrounds like KOA. Would imagine the roads would be a little difficult to navigate in a long rig. Overall, the stay was good and we would return again. We camped at Spartanburg NE / Gaffney KOA in a Motorhome.

Highlands Hammock State Park, Sebring, Florida

Date of Stay: March, 2016 - $11.00
Overall Rating:

A previous review perfectly summed up this campground: The campground itself is average, but the park itself is excellent. While it's certainly not horrible, compared to other Florida state parks, Highland Hammock is not up to par. This is an older campground showing its age and in major need of updating. Very narrow, sometimes difficult to navigate roads in the campground -- also, there is no clear signage to help direct traffic flow down these small, one-lane roads. Our site was very sandy and both the picnic table and fire ring were so old as to be completely unusable. On the other hand, the park itself is great to explore. The Civilian Conservation Corps originally constructed the park in the 1930s and there is a small CCC museum on site that's worth a visit. Daily tram tours take visitors on a guided tour of the park. There are also hiking paths to explore. We camped at Highlands Hammock State Park in a Motorhome.

General Coffee State Park, Nicholls, Georgia

Date of Stay: March, 2016 - $26.00
Overall Rating:

Very nice and clean state park. Check in at the small store at the main entrance and then choose any open spot. The campground is in the very back of the park, so it's a bit of a drive. There are two different camping areas. We ended up staying in the upper one. I suggest driving through each to see the open spots before choosing one. We tried a couple different ones until we found one we really like. There is a nature trail from the camping area to the farm at the front of the park -- just be prepared for a bit of a walk (bring water and snacks). Overall, we enjoyed camping here and would return. We camped at General Coffee State Park in a Motorhome.
