Heart Of Oklahoma Expo Center, Shawnee, Oklahoma

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed here one night to be near a dog trial in the area. The park is about 4 miles south of 1-40. It is a HUGE RV park in back of the Expo center. It was not manned at 6 pm on Saturday when we arrived, but they have a drop box in which to put your check. I knew that the sites were $25 from their website, but oddly I didn't see any signs stating the price. They have some sites in a concrete parking lot as you go in and then more sites on a gravel road behind the grandstand (there are signs directing you to them.) Those sites are gravel, most of them have full hook ups, and some are pull through. The sites are very close together (think RV park spacing) We stayed in site 366, which was level. There were less than 8 trailers there, and I am sure some of them were residents, but the park was surprisingly clean and perfectly quiet. They have bathrooms with showers and laundry scattered throughout the park as well. While it isn't a destination campground by any means, I was pleasantly surprised by the park and would certainly recommend it as a stop over or as a place to stay if for some reason you are in the area. We camped at Heart Of Oklahoma Expo Center in a Travel Trailer.

Eisenhower State Park, Osage City, Kansas

Date of Stay: October, 2016 - $23.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed in the Doud campground. Rate was for full hook ups, which was a bargain. There were several residents in the campground, which was surprising for a state park, but no one caused any problems. Few trees and not a lot of privacy between sites, but it wasnt crowded on a Sunday in October. The park is about 12 miles from I-35 and we would stay again as a one night stopover. We camped at Eisenhower State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Cedar Lake, Talihina, Oklahoma

Date of Stay: September, 2016 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

This is a USFS campground near in SE OK (actually closer to Heavener than Talihena as stated). The roads into the campground were in great shape. We stayed in the Shady Lake Area which does not have direct views of or access to the lake, so it was MUCH less crowded than the other area. Our site had 30 amp and water, and was perfectly level with a picnic table, two lantern poles, a nice grill and fire pit. The campground has lots of trees and shade, and the trees give some privacy as well. Restrooms were clean and the showers were free. Dump station was easily accessible (although there was no trash can at the dump station. We camped at Cedar Lake in a Travel Trailer.

Black Mesa State Park, Kenton, Oklahoma

Date of Stay: April, 2016 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

As others have said, this a a remote area in the Oklahoma Panhandle. The sites are grass and quite close to each other, although the ones nearer to the restroom seem a little better spaced out. We were there on a Wednesday and Thursday, and there were several empty spaces. Restrooms were clean and well maintained. There was definitely a sewage odor in the restroom vicinity, however. There are several small nature hikes in the campground itself, but you have to drive to reach the Black Mesa trail head. We camped at Black Mesa State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

There is NO gas station in Kenton....nearest gas is in Boise City. If you are in the area, the hike to the top of Black Mesa is worthwhile, if for no other reason than to say you have bagged the highest "peak" in Oklahoma. The hike is fairly long, so be sure you are prepared with lots of water.

Strayhorn Landing COE, Gore, Oklahoma

Date of Stay: April, 2016 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed here in the off season, but it was still relatively crowded. They have a nice split of reservable and non-reservable sites, but in the summer I don't know if I would take the chance of driving in without a reservation. The non-reservable sites probably have better lake views (especially sunrise/sunset views, but some of them share water so be aware of that. The park was well mowed and as clean as can be expected for a lake campground (in our experience, many lake campers and boaters in this area are not great at cleaning up after themselves). We stayed at site 6 which was perfectly level and had a little shade but not much privacy. Tenkiller Lake is less muddy and red than a lot of Oklahoma lakes and there is quite a bit to do in the area. As always in Oklahoma, watch out for ticks! We will stay again, for sure. We camped at Strayhorn Landing COE in a Travel Trailer.
