Fort Chiswell RV Park, Max Meadows, Virginia

Date of Stay: October, 2017 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

This has been an automatic 'stay at' place for a number of years. Seldom make a reservation. Often stay multiple nights. The last stop, second time for this year, not so good. Called ahead & made a reservation expecting one of the pull throughs as always given before without a request. Really did not want to unhitch this time. We were assigned a back in. No difference in price for the inconvenience. Disappointing especially as a many time returning customer. We camped at Fort Chiswell RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Dumplin Valley RV, Kodak, Tennessee

Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Many have commented how quiet Dumplin Valley is. Not so when their annual bluegrass festival is on. The place is packed & it is alive with the sounds of campers jamming playing bluegrass till way into the morning hours. A site needs to be booked almost a year in advance. The festival is that good. The day after the festival is over the ex dairy farm reverts back to its charming low key self, perfect to use as a base for exploring the area. We camped at Dumplin Valley RV in a Fifth Wheel.

Grass Point State Park, Clayton, New York

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $36.00
Overall Rating:

Arrived in the area without reservations. Very pleased with service from CG from another SP that was full but called down the line & secured a spot for us at Grasse Point. Pretty location on the river. Sites rather close & can be anything but level to one degree or another. $5 out of state surcharge over fee irritating. We camped at Grass Point State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Chenango Valley State Park, Chenango Forks, New York

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

Interior roads very good but actual sites are hit or miss. Just dirt. No effort made to create a level pad of any sort. Any sort of out of state surcharge is guaranteed to disappoint & cost a point. Single dump for such a large CG must be very busy on a weekend. We camped at Chenango Valley State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Newport News Park Campground, Newport News, Virginia

Date of Stay: October, 2016 - $34.00
Overall Rating:

The park now has an office/store/laundry to rival any 'resort' at 3 times the price. Next in line for financial attention should be the sites themselves. A level site is a rarity. Some have slopes which are quite extreme. Some grading & paving would go a long way to bring the campground up to the standard of the office. Also, be sure to bring a table cloth for the picnic table. A common complaint but if only campgrounds would give their picnic tables a cleaning a couple time a season with a pressure washer. Overall the park is a gem in the middle of a whole lot to see & do. If you like to be jammed next to your neighbour, have a train or highway right next to you & pay double the price for the pleasure, don't stay here. The few negative comments aside, this is a great park. We camped at Newport News Park Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Cedarville State Forest, Brandywine, Maryland

Date of Stay: October, 2016 - $17.00
Overall Rating:

Point lost for site selection method. Only a few sites suitable for longer rigs but no attempt by park to assign rigs to size appropriate sites. A class B or tent can fit into any site. A larger rig can only fit into larger sites. No issue for us since we were off weekend & at end of season. There was a teardrop trailer in an extra long site nearby. Had a 40' rig come in the park would have lost the revenue since the teardrop had the only site suitable for a big rig. Feels very remote & quiet. Only noise is distant Andrews AFB air traffic. We camped at Cedarville State Forest in a Fifth Wheel.

Lums Pond State Park, Bear, Delaware

Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $41.00
Overall Rating:

No doubt about it, the state has spent a bundle upgrading this park. There are a variety of site lengths. Something for everyone provided people use sites appropriate for their size. Levels looked generally pretty good with only minor side to side differences. Some sites do have a front to back slope enough to be challenging to longer vehicles. We arrived on a Thursday, no reservations, but the camp host on duty went way beyond duty & gave us a site of a 'no show.' The 'no show' never showed up. Never called to cancel either. Oh well. Our gain.

The point lost was for the cost. Understanding that upgrading the CG cost a bundle to do & was well done, the price is a little on the high side. We camped at Lums Pond State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Arm of Gold Campground & RV Park, Little Bras d'Or, Nova Scotia

Date of Stay: June, 2016 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

We arrived at Arm of Gold off the ferry after a wonderful month in Newfoundland for a couple of nights to restock before moving on. First point loss was for not accepting Mastercard. It is 2016. Who does not take Mastercard?? Wi-Fi was iffy at best. Hate to think what is when the campground is anything more than the 25% full, as it was during our stay. Worse, I suspect it was turned off after 10:00PM each night. Gave up trying for access. For the money I'd expect to have a fire ring but no, none available.

What it has is location. Minutes from the ferry. The grounds are very well kept. The very special gem every Tuesday evening is the picking in the barn by local musicians. These guys are not professionals but it is a nice unique touch that the place has. We camped at Arm of Gold Campground & RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

J. T. Cheeseman Provincial Park, Cape Ray, Newfoundland

Date of Stay: June, 2016 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

Surprised that this CG has not had a more recent review. Yet another great NL Provincial Park. Point lost for the gravel access road otherwise everything was just perfect. WIFI available near one of the buildings. 50amp service in the power loop.

A great place to stop if getting off the evening ferry or overnighting before catching the morning ferry. We camped at J. T. Cheeseman Provincial Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Peyton's Woods RV Park & Campground, Twillingate, Newfoundland

Date of Stay: June, 2016 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

The new owners have hit the ground running this year. The laundry/shower/bathroom area are all freshly done including hardware. Outside they have been busy grading & rolling the road & sites. Power posts look fairly recent but power at post was only 114VAC each leg & our Progressive regulator tripped out due to low voltage. Could have been caused by running 2 heaters & having water heater kick in on a 30amp post.

Looks like they have put in or are in the process of adding more sites at the back. We camped at Peyton's Woods RV Park & Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Viking RV Park, Quirpon, Newfoundland

Date of Stay: June, 2016 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

Total rate was $70 for a combo Passport America and rack rate over 4 nights. Good value for what seems to be a typical NL campground. Wi-Fi worked very well. No site separation but enough room.

One point lost for power instability. At times it was down to 107 VAC on one leg and 109 VAC on the other. This with little load on an almost empty campground.

Also of note, the campground is in the middle of what will be at least a doubling of site capacity during 2016. Ongoing additions are having little effect on existing campground area. We camped at Viking RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Lomond River Lodge, Lomond River, Newfoundland

Date of Stay: May, 2016 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

This one is off-grid, literally. They have their own onsite generator. Most sites for the transient visitor are only 15 amp, a household plug, no ability to reset the breaker yourself if you overload it, which does not take much. To make do with so little power one needs to be knowledgeable on power management.

Wi-Fi offered is unreliable to nonexistent. There is no cell service in the area.

One area is open lot car park style camping. Another wooded loop needs a good dose of the pruner to cut back roof destroying branches.

For the rate one would expect much better.

What it does have is location being less than a mile from the entrance to Gros Morne NP. We camped at Lomond River Lodge in a Fifth Wheel.

North Sydney/Cabot Trail KOA, New Harris, Nova Scotia

Date of Stay: May, 2016 - $41.00
Overall Rating:

The only point lost was because it is a little on the pricey side & no fire ring at site. There was a guy playing bagpipes near the office when we arrived. Nice touch. Apparently he does that quite often. It looks like they have addressed any power issues. Recently installed, not weathered, boxes are visible around the CG. Looks like some work has been done on the water spigots too. We camped at North Sydney/Cabot Trail KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

Shubie Campground, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia

Date of Stay: May, 2016 - $43.00
Overall Rating:

Points lost for being very expensive for just W&E plus a lack of security. Not that the park is in a questionable area, it is very nice, but there are an awful lot of looky look sightseers who go cruising through the CG well past 10:00PM. Sites are spaced enough but have that Canadian cost saving thing of one utility post serving two sites so that you are parked opposing one but facing another. We camped at Shubie Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Lunenburg Board of Trade Campground, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia

Date of Stay: May, 2016 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

Due to a reservation misunderstanding we were given a full hookup site at dry price. Sites in the upper full hookup & W/E section are close but the campground is not the attraction, the town is, and all is within walking distance. Overall it is pricey for what it is but the location cannot be equaled. We took the $1.00 per day Wi-Fi, which works but is somewhat slow. We camped at Lunenburg Board of Trade Campground in a Fifth Wheel.
