Indian Creek COE, Monroe City, Missouri

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

The park, overall, seemed very nice. We mainly stayed in our camping area and did a few trails, along with the beach. The trails were nice and the beach area has a very nice swimming area. It is restricted to those who are camping in the campgrounds, so that is nice. If you were in a travel trailer, you would probably give this park a nine or 10. However, being in a pop-up camper, we have to use the shower and bathroom facilities. The showers and bathrooms in our Campground area were horrible. Though they were cleaned once a day, that was not near enough to keep up with the uncleanliness. The cleaning they do in the bathroom and showers is cursory at best. The same Band-Aid was present in the shower stall that I used all four days we were there. My family had to use a 5 gallon portable bathroom bucket that I keep for emergencies while deer hunting. We felt fortunate to have that to use. The campground hosts were very friendly and helpful with providing directions to local attractions. The COE Visitor Center is excellent and should be a must-do if you camp at this park. We camped at Indian Creek COE in a Tent Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Right near the beginning of the park, across the highway, you will see a small ranch house with piles of firewood. An older gentleman there sells firewood and also bags of ice. His prices seem to be very reasonable, especially for ice.

Arrow Rock State Historic Site, Arrow Rock, Missouri

Date of Stay: September, 2016 - $21.00
Overall Rating:

The Park is easily accessible from I-70. The park is well-maintained, with the shower house & bathrooms being tidy in the rv area. I've heard the amenities in the tent area may need some sprucing up. Nice walking trails and a great visitors center with a nice museum.

We stayed over Labor Day weekend and the park was quiet and peaceful. The stars are very visible on a clear night. We camped at Arrow Rock State Historic Site in a Tent Trailer.

The town of Arrow Rock is within walking distance of the State Park. It contains nice, quaint shops, and many examples of historic architecture.

We'll definitely be coming back.

Sam A Baker State Park, Patterson, Missouri

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

The park has nice walking trails and beautiful streams, along with a nice camp store. However, the bathrooms and shower houses are deplorable. They are long overdue for a remodel, and mold/mildew abounds. The wife found a used feminine hygiene item in the shower. If you have a camper with your own bath and toilet, you'll love the park. If you have a pop up camper, or camp in a tent, the bathrooms /shower houses are rough. We camped at Sam A Baker State Park in a Tent Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

If you go to the Shut-Ins to swim, don't use the blue trail. It's nice, but not exactly well marked and takes about 45 minutes. On the other hand, the gated maintenance road, near the trailhead for the blue trail, I have heard it takes about 20 minutes to get to the Shut-Ins. I did not try this road but was told it is a shortcut.

Coles Creek Campground, Carlyle, Illinois

Date of Stay: June, 2016 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

The campsites are very spacious and well maintained. I cannot remember our site number, but it was in the 70's, I think. The fee is an estimate, too. I know it was less than twenty dollars a night.

The bathrooms and shower houses were clean and well-maintained. There is a nice beach area for families to access the lake.

We'll definitely be back! We camped at Coles Creek Campground in a Tent Trailer.
