Clinton Lake State Recreation Area, Dewitt, Illinois

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

This campground charges 150% of their normal fee for holiday weekends. That in and of it's self is pretty bad but other campgrounds do similar. This one tops it off by killing power on groups of sites thus limiting the site availability to those that need power. What's more is that inflated fee only gets you the site, if you want to swim on the beach with your family of 5 for the weekend, it will cost you another $10 per day. No, it's not included. For a state run park that our tax money pays for this seems ridiculous. It makes it look as though the park in only interested in money. With a failing power grid that's outdated and a pay to play mentality, we will not be back here. Very little tree cover and sites are nearly on top of each other. Mowing is done but they mow as little as possible leaving tall grass and pests within feet of the camper and the sites. Find a different park unless you like paying high KOA type fees and spacing with none of the benefits. We camped at Clinton Lake State Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

Friends Creek, Decatur, Illinois

Date of Stay: September, 2016 - $17.00
Overall Rating:

This is a great little sleepy campground. Perfect if you have to work in Decatur or surrounding area while camping as its very close. There isn't much to do at this campground other than just enjoy having nothing to do but that's OK sometimes. The one thing I didn't like is the caretakers dig out the fire rings and that leaves a hole to collect water and starting a fire in a puddle of water is a bit difficult. Someone should really tell them to stop that, yes it looks nice but is very impractical for using it for what it was designed for. Other than that great park. We camped at Friends Creek in a Travel Trailer.

Weldon Springs State Park, Clinton, Illinois

Date of Stay: September, 2016 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

I know I have given this park a low review but please read on to find out more. We love this campground. We go camping nearly 3 weekends out of every month with friends just not always here even though its closer to us than other campgrounds. The biggest reason I rated this campground low is based on value. We have a 30' tt and there are a bunch of the sites we can not use because we can't get into them or they are extremely un-level. It is an adorable little campground but for more than a month now the hot water has been broken at the shower house. This is an issue considering that there are NO full service hookups in this park. Hosts are friendly if not punctual upon entry, everyone that camps here are friendly, and we feel comfortable with our younger kids running around here given the size of the place. I do not like paying $20 per night given that the amenities are lacking here. It seems a bit high for what your getting. The park is aging and I understand that but it is a state park so the upkeep is built into my taxes already and I really expect it to be done since I have paid for it. The sites are spacious but there is not good separation borders from one to another, they do have fire rings most of them are concrete but they are crumbling. The electric service on some of the sites is finicky, the breakers are aging and like to trip if there is the slightest hint of moisture in the air. This is why we only go here if there is a chance someone has to run back into town during the weekend for some activity or something. Other wise we go elsewhere. If they had water and sewer service on some of the sites I would rate much higher as the shower house wouldn't matter near as much. We camped at Weldon Springs State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Coon Creek COE, Shelbyville, Illinois

Date of Stay: August, 2016 - $12.00
Overall Rating:

We love this campground! We camp nearly 3 weekends out of the month most of the time and this place has nearly everything or it's nearby. We usually camp with friends so we enjoy some of the buddy sites. The only complaint we have about this is that there is only one buddy site with full service in the entire park and some of the buddy sites are not set up very well and in need of rethinking for the layout. There are many of them that the campers are door to back of your buddies camper and others that one of the two sites are set up backwards from all camper set ups. Meaning your door will be on the wrong side of the site so you can't use a camper attached awning and you have to walk around your camper to get to the table and fire ring unless you have a small camper and get creative. Other than that there is a site for everyone and every style here. Group, secluded, sunny, tree covered, water front, in the hills, and group style areas. Like I said this is a great place and even has boat launch if you have that kind of money lol. We camped at Coon Creek COE in a Travel Trailer.
