About Racer and Friend

Retired journalist...retired environmental specialist...retired government environmental regulator...retired truck and motorcoach operator (2 million safe driver miles)...retired auto mechanic. (Not in that order). Whew. No wonder I'm tired. But not worn out. My lovely wife (also retired) and I are embarking on our first major RVer/Truck Camper expedition. Found this website thanks to a veteran Truck Camper, who said this was the only one he needed. I think I see why.

Golden Shores RV Park, Topock, Arizona

Date of Stay: December, 2017 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

While it took several phone calls for directions, this site was definitely worth the effort. And it wasn't their fault that I couldn't find them. Actually only five miles north of I-40 and Arizona exit 1, it was pitch dark and my headlights were doing a good job lighting up our front bumper and not much else. A family-owned campground with mostly seasonal campers but a few overnight locations available. And if the campground lacked anything--which it really didn't--The owners more than made up for it. And now that I know how to find them, day or night, we definitely will stay here again. We camped at Golden Shores RV Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Approximately 20 miles north of Golden Shores on Old 66 is the legendary "living ghost town" of Oatman, Az., where you can see wild burros meandering around town, along with a myriad of touristy stuff. While we were only laying over for one night, we definitely plan to make time the next time to visit Oatman.

Stayed here during the off-season. Water at sites not available (13 degree temps in the morning). Potable water available at drum station/entrance. Electric only during off-season. Heated restrooms and showers. Beautiful, rugged country. Definitely want to return during warmer weather and visit the Ruins, etc. We camped at Homolovi Ruins State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Truly a touch of class campground. Extremely easy on/off CA 58 on the east side of Bakersfield. Friendly staff. Secure, gated campground. Sites were concrete pads. Very clean environment. Very easy to navigate. Definitely will stay here again. We camped at A Country RV Park in a Motorhome.

Wal-Mart within short driving distance, but get directions from staff. I decided to trust my own navigational skills and ended up going 10 miles+ out of the way when it should have been a five-minute driver.

Meadowlark RV Park, Creswell, Oregon

Date of Stay: December, 2017 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

Strategically, this park was located so we could schedule our southbound trip over Siskiyou Pass for midday when fog would be gone and any icy conditions melted. (Encountered both of those conditions on our southerly trip). While it was the rainy season and there were a few sites surrounded by water, staff gave us a high and dry location on both visits. We stayed at Meadowlark on our northbound trip to Portland as well as our return trip home. And we definitely will stay again. Also enjoyed the little community of Creswell. Be sure and check out the aerial video of the campground. Not sure why more locations aren't doing this. Really gives you a good look. We camped at Meadowlark RV Park in a Motorhome.

Downtown Creswell is about a mile away and well worth visiting. No big-box stores but we found the local grocery store--Farmlands-- (what a treat) to be competitive and such a pleasure to shop).

Redding RV Park, Redding, California

Date of Stay: December, 2017 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

Great layover campground and a good location for your base camp if you're visiting the area. Easy on/off I-5 but you do need to pay attention to your GPS and/or directions. Campground is on a hillside (what else, considering the beautiful area?) but easy to get around and sites were very level. Stayed here on trip to Oregon and on return trip home. Courteous and anxious to please staff. Definitely will stay here again. We camped at Redding RV Park in a Motorhome.

Kit Fox RV Park, Patterson, California

Date of Stay: December, 2017 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

Kit Fox was an oasis in the desert, though it's not in the desert. I actually thought it was newer than it is (actually about 10 years old). Everything was well-maintained and the staff was eager to please. Within easy walking distance of several eateries, including a KFC, a pizza place and a sit-down restaurant. And a walk-in gate at the opposite end from the campground entry made it very convenient to try out the local food choices. In addition, there is local bus service into the town of Patterson, including a Wal-Mart. Although we missed our first return connection, we got to enjoy a 45-minute ride around the neighboring communities, thanks to a very gracious bus driver. We stayed at Kit Fox on a round-trip to Oregon. On the return trip, we decided to just "hang out" and enjoy a second night. Definitely a place to "hang out." We camped at Kit Fox RV Park in a Motorhome.

Walnut RV Park, Vega, Texas

Date of Stay: December, 2017 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

Good overnight layover location. Just west of Amarillo, easy on and off from I-40. FUH and pull through. Campground was clean and well organized. Laundry on-site. The owners are gracious hosts. Stayed first time on trip to Oregon, then on return trip. It is an older campground with vintage, heated restrooms/showers. We definitely will stay here on any occasion when we are passing through the area. We camped at Walnut RV Park in a Motorhome.

Railside RV Ranch, Williams, Arizona

Date of Stay: November, 2017 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

We stopped at Railside for a one-night layover enroute to Portland, OR. And we were so sorry to be informed they wouldn't be open for our return trip. We were excited to learn, however, that they may start staying open later into the winter beginning in 2018. The park is extremely well-organized and the owners couldn't be nicer and more anxious to please. And their very capable shuttle bus driver is available from morning to night to get you into the business district of Williams (about 2 miles). We will definitely stay at Railside whenever we are in the area. We camped at Railside RV Ranch in a Motorhome.

Newberry Mountain RV and Motel Park, Newberry Springs, California

Date of Stay: November, 2017 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

Easy on/off, approximately 1 1/2 miles south of I-40 (paved county road a little rough but navigable). Owners very friendly and eager to please. Site was clean and well-organized. A nice layover location and, if you're going West over Tehachapi Pass, it's close enough that you can time your drive to get over the Pass during midday. (Have never liked making that trip after dark). We camped at Newberry Mountain RV and Motel Park in a Motorhome.

Bluewater Lake State Park, Prewitt, New Mexico

Date of Stay: November, 2017 - $14.00
Overall Rating:

Although park was "shut down" for winter (no water at individual sites and no showers/restrooms), we enjoyed the truly New Mexico landscape. Sites were level and, given the slow season, there were plenty to choose from. Potable water fill was available near campsites and dump station located at entry/exit to park. A sort drive (about 7 miles) south of I-40 on good, paved road. Definitely would stay again, in or out of season. We camped at Bluewater Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

Greenwood Lodge and Campsites, Bennington, Vermont

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $37.00
Overall Rating:

Another reviewer called it a gem in the rough. Exactly right, but not all that rough. Mom, Dad and Son obviously have worked hard to make this place shine. They take great pride in their campground and they should. It is beautiful. Next door to the Green Mountain National Forest and near the highest point on Vermont Highway 9. Two small ponds and a well-manicured grassy area are the view from almost all of the campsites. Adjacent to Highway 9 but watch closely for the sign. We camped at Greenwood Lodge and Campsites in a Motorhome.

Little Buffalo State Park, Newport, Pennsylvania

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

This is probably Pennsylvania's best-kept secret campgrounds. I understand it used to be privately-owned but was taken over by the state. The campground is on the side of a mountain but the sites are dead-on level. A new--when were there--bath house is immaculate. We've stayed there twice in a truck camper and now--having moved into a Class A Motorhome--will be back again. We camped at Little Buffalo State Park in a Truck Camper.

Dayton KOA, Brookville, Ohio

Date of Stay: September, 2016 - $52.00
Overall Rating:

The campgrounds were immaculately maintained. Our site was easy to find and easy to access. Rest rooms/showers/laundry building was one of the finest we've seen. If you're into that, you can even watch television while shaving, etc. We stopped overnight on our way east, then stopped again on our return trip west. My only issue was the difference in rates: $46.91 the first night; $52.91 the second night (a Thursday). They explained to my wife that their weekends begin on Thursday. Not a big enough deal to argue over but when we checked in--after hours--the info on the check-in stand was the same as the first night. Be that as it may, it won't keep us from going back. We camped at Dayton KOA in a Truck Camper.

Prospect Lake Park, North Egremont, Massachusetts

Date of Stay: September, 2016 - $36.00
Overall Rating:

We arrived late and left early so didn't have a lot of time to look around. The owners/staff were very friendly and helpful and had reserved a site for us on the basis of a phone call to them that afternoon--no deposit, etc., asked for. We had advised them we were not certain we could make it before they closed. While we didn't spend a lot of time, we did see the beautiful lake that the campground is located on. Lots of water activity going on as we left. Rest rooms/showers were not new but were well-kept and clean. Campgrounds was really peaceful despite most of the spaces being filled. And I was impressed by their picking up of recyclables one morning per week, if you left them near the roadway in front of your space. We camped at Prospect Lake Park in a Truck Camper.

Rustic Acres RV Resort and Campground, Shippenville, Pennsylvania

Date of Stay: September, 2016 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

Park was extremely clean and neat. The owners could not have been more accommodating. We arrived after hours, calling them from I-80 to see if they had room for an overnight. We were advised to to pull up in front of the office and wait. (We drove by their house as we approached the office). They led us to our site and made certain we were satisfied and could get settled on our own. While the rest rooms/showers were "rustic," they were well-built and clean. The grounds were very well kept. The spaces were level--which took some effort during construction because the park is located on the side of a hill. There is an upper and lower level. Upper seemed to have more shade trees among the camps, while the lower level, although surrounded by trees, was pretty much open in the center, where we parked. Getting there was an easy drive from I-80. I did, however, drive (slightly) past the entrance because the park sign was only painted on the opposite side. A minor oversight, quickly forgotten by the warm welcome. We camped at Rustic Acres RV Resort and Campground in a Truck Camper.
