Raccoon Branch Campground, Sugar Grove, Virginia

Date of Stay: October, 2016 - $11.00
Overall Rating:

The park is small, quiet, clean, and well laid out. Nicely shaded with easy access to towns, highways, attractions. A famous hiking trail is accessible directly from the campground. The camp host is very helpful and knowledgeable; he is also very watchful, in a quiet, non-intrusive way. I stayed about 10 days...hated to leave. Oh! There is NO TV or cell reception, but has great Internet! I can't wait to return. The camp host helps pick the best site for you & your rig. They are not all level, but very manageable. We camped at Raccoon Branch Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Big Meadows Campground (NPS Campground), Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

Date of Stay: May, 2016 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

Very large campground with every type of cabin imaginable, some built by the CCC or WPA. We stayed in a small RV and came to hike. No water, no electricity at sites, but dump and potable water available in the park. Great camp store with a (free) walk through, partially interactive, verbal & written narrative of the history of the area. Some hiking trails were easily accessible, others were a walk away ( but, hey, we were there to hike!). My only complaint is that they mix the tent campers with the RV'ers - and that is not a good combination, as the two camp very differently. I would return to this campground, but request to be put with other Rv'ers. We camped at Big Meadows Campground (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

There is a restaurant on the grounds, pricey, but the people really care about the food they put out. Here is the famous 'Mile High Blackberry Ice Cream Pie' (after hiking, I ate it all!).

Fuel (gas & I believe diesel ) is available on the grounds, near the main road. The employees in the camp stores are very pleasant, helpful and genuinely friendly. The specialty food goods in these stores are great ( i.e. the blackberry jelly...the fudge). Take time here...there is a lot to experience.

Lewis Mountain Campground (NPS Campground), Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

Date of Stay: May, 2016 - $8.00
Overall Rating:

A friend & I stayed there a few days in May in a small RV to hike. There are numerous, well marked, trails accessible from the campgrounds, including the A.T. The view from the amphitheater is breath taking . There is no water or electricity at the sites, but there is water available to fill your tanks (free, and it is very good water!). The bathrooms were well kept and clean, as were the grounds. I look forward to returning there. Golden Pass card afforded us 1/2 off...I really appreciate that! We camped at Lewis Mountain Campground (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.

Mathews Arm Campground (NPS Campground), Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

Date of Stay: May, 2016 - $8.00
Overall Rating:

Large, spread out campground. Plenty of room between sites. Easy access to sites. Lots of hiking trails readily available from the campgrounds. Campground Rangers were very helpful. No water at the site, but had a free potable water fill up place within the grounds - and the water was fantastic!!! Clean, clear, cold, pure. We camped at Mathews Arm Campground (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.
