Ancient Cedars Mesa Verde RV Park, Mancos, Colorado

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $39.00
Overall Rating:

New owners took over this park in July but you can see that they have a vision. A 1/2 acre dog park has been put in place along with some new trees and shrubs. 2 nice playgrounds, a pool, and 2 hot tubs. The entrance to the park looks a mess because the dog park is on the road front. The tractor tires and other apparatus for the dogs is not immediately obvious so one thinks its a junkyard. The dog loved the space however. Maybe a few screening shrubs could make the entrance more appealing. Speaking of dogs, leash rules need to be enforced. Our neighbor, who looks long term, left their dog off the leash whenever it was outside. Not appreciated when our poor dog is always on a leash for her safety. Saw a dog pile not picked up - I wonder whose it was? :( As for our site, it was in the open so good satellite access. New load of gravel has been spread so it's nice a thick even outside your door. There are several sites with trees if you want one. Some sites have fire rings or they have portable ones if you ask. Great view of a butte in Mesa Verde National Park which is just across the highway. Easy access for sure. While the whole cg feels a little messy right now, the new owners are very friendly and beginning work to improve it. We camped at Ancient Cedars Mesa Verde RV Park in a Motorhome.

In Cortez, there is a BLM Canyons of the Ancients National Monument and Museum. Takes about an hour for the museum. They have hiking and tours available but it was cold and rainy the day we were there.

OK RV Park & Canyonlands Stables, Moab, Utah

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $50.00
Overall Rating:

The pictures of the park look better than reality. The sites are sparsely weedy. What is not weeds is sandy gravel. The spots are quite close together. There is what I will call construction trash along the back fence line. Initially, we were very disappointed. Almost didn't stay but the other places were booked. OK RV turned out to be okay. It is on the far side of Moab from Arches but it is not inconvenient. Quite a few UTV/ATV vehicles were in and out of the park but they drove slow and were not noisy. Both of office personnel and the fellow campers were very friendly and helpful. WiFi and phone use was good. There was quite a bit of rain that left puddles of water in the driveway. A tractor came through trying to smooth out the holes a little. If we returned to Moab we would look for a different cg but this one was, as its name suggests - OK. We camped at OK RV Park & Canyonlands Stables in a Motorhome.

The Branding Iron Restaurant just off the main highway as you turn towards the cg is quite good and reasonably priced. For grocery stores, the City Market carries Kroger brands and the Village Market had a nice selection. We drove the La Sal Mountain Loop. Great views of the backside of Arches and up into the mountains where the terrain changes from red rock to granite. Took about 2 hours. Don't miss Canyonland National Park about 45 minutes away. Very different from Arches.

Country Cabins and RV Park (formerly Kountry Kamping & Kabins), Mobridge, South Dakota

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

This was an okay stop where the campsite was right next to the train track. Like 100 ft. Thankfully, the train only came through about twice a day and not during the night hours. Very dusty though there were high winds during our stay but not a lot of grass or landscaping to hold the dust down. Looks to be used mostly by folks wanting to fish on the weekend at the near by river or go to the casino. The owner was very nice and efficiently checked us in. Doubt we would stay again, but there is not much else around. We stayed 2 nights to get a feel for the local folks and few interest points. We camped at Country Cabins and RV Park (formerly Kountry Kamping & Kabins) in a Motorhome.

The Klein Museum was much more interesting than it looked. All kinds of artifacts from Native American and local history to present day high school info. Toys from way back to the 1960s or 70s. Don't miss the nice park in the area right on the water. Drive past the drive-in theater to reach it.

Lake of the Woods Campground, Baudette, Minnesota

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $36.00
Overall Rating:

Perimeter is a mobile home park. Interior space is cg. Mostly 5th wheels and TT but the sites are plenty large for a 45' w/toad. There is a marina on site that the owners recently purchased. They are beginning an expansion on that land. There are many nice mature trees scattered around. A few need to be trimmed up to allow for large rigs to navigate without getting scratch. Many spots are side-to-side so the drivers side is very close to the next rig but that allows for a nice living space on the door side. Nice pool that the little ones tend to dominate as well as a good playground. No place for the fur-babies. There is a sign for a dog walk but we never found it. A trash truck is located in the back that you throw your stuff into. It stinks terribly. Dumpsters don't seem to smell so bad for some reason. Maybe because of the lids. The truck is open and smells about 40 feet before you can pitch and run. Nasty. Grounds and fire pits could be cleaned. Our fire pit was about half full of ash. We met some folks that took us out walleye fishing. As a result, we really like this place and are planning a family vacation sometime in the future. We will stay here. Had a super good time. We camped at Lake of the Woods Campground in a Motorhome.

Don't miss the variety/hardware store as you enter the town. There is also an odd store across from the Grand Theatre to get farm veggies, coffee, gourmet pet food, and home decor. Very eclectic. Ronnie's is a great souvenier place. Lake of the Woods Food Store is a full grocery store. Don't miss Willie the Walleye Fish at the far end of town.

Saginaw Campground, Saginaw, Minnesota

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

This is a nice cg tucked in the corner of 2 busy highways. It can be noisy but we are well insulated so it didn't bother us too much. This park has a lot of workers living in it so there are large dump trucks parking around the perimeter every night. They leave as quietly as possible each morning. Frankly, we could not tell when they came in or left from the other traffic noise. The spot was reasonable and folks were friendly. Nice grass that was well maintained and a fire pit which, unfortunately, was littered with cigarette butts and other debris. The owner was still on his honeymoon when we arrived so a shirtless man was helping out to the best of his ability. We were assigned Site 3 when I made the reservation. He seemed challenged in having us check-in a day early because someone (us) was to check into Site 3 the next day. I tried to explain this to him but no success so we went to Site 2. This site had a breaker issue so the helper moved us to our assigned Site 3 the next day. It was all just a little cumbersome. This could be a quaint park if the owner would staff the office and ensure the staffing was competent. One hopeful camper stopped at our site asking where they could park. I placed a call to the office for them and we waited for a return call that did not occur until the next day. We offered them the name of another cg in the area. While walking our dog the next day, someone dashed after me asking for assistance. They called 3 hours earlier but did not receive a return call. Sorry - I don't work here. Someone else pulled in right behind them and I dashed into my rig. Staffing and answering the phone is important for continued business. No reason not to stay here but I will probably stay at another I already scoped out. We camped at Saginaw Campground in a Motorhome.

Jamestown Campground, Jamestown, North Dakota

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $36.00
Overall Rating:

Nice easy on/off cg from I-94. Dust is absolutely ridiculous! Just layers onto your vehicle. Township apparently owns the road and hasn't followed through with their promise to pave it. CG interior roads are a little tight. Nice owners but really a bit much on their rules. They accept dogs but are not really dog friendly. Appears they tolerate them. Dogs are not allowed in about 2/3s of the campground. Can't even take them to the trash receptacle. Sites are close. We lucked out with a nice corner spot open to a big field so we were happy. Satellite, wifi, and phones all worked well. Would not stay again because of the dust and lack of dog appreciation. We camped at Jamestown Campground in a Motorhome.

Pictured Rocks RV Park & Campground, Christmas, Michigan

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

This is a new cg but very busy. Lots of folks staying for a few days to see Pictured Rocks and Lake Superior. There are no trees except on the perimeter and the grass has yet to come in. The young owners are working hard to get this right. Hydro seeding and cutting was done while we were there. The bathrooms are clean but not complete. Mirrors still on the counter and floors not tiled. Did not use the showers but looked in. Appeared clean. They are very long and narrow with no hooks, chairs, or anything for your belongings. Sites are level gravel. Lots of sand with an attempt of grass. Nice and wide but the lack of landscaping makes you feel like your neighbors are close. There is a common strip of ground between the campers that would be really nice with some greenery as a separator. This cg sounded noisier than others we have stayed in. Coughing, motorcycles, and the traffic noise from M-28 just seemed loud. Again, landscaping would help this. The utilities are far back on each site. Almost had to use 2 hoses to reach the sewer but we made it. Did notice many folks were using 2 hoses. Utility set up was not well thought out. We camped at Pictured Rocks RV Park & Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Take the Pictured Rocks cruise to appreciate their beauty. Very nice free beaches nearby. Multiple warnings posted about kayaking on Lake Superior due to the cold water and quickly changing conditions. If you choose to go out, only sea kayaks 14' or longer are considered safe. There are many smaller lakes close by. We enjoyed Bruno's Run Trail but it is a 12 mile hike; not the 9.1 mi as stated in AllTrails or 10 miles as mentioned on the trailhead post.

Indigo Bluffs RV Park & Resort, Empire, Michigan

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $69.00
Overall Rating:

This park is split into 2 sections: camping with gravel spaces and cement pads. Lots of trees. This side is very family oriented with all kinds of RVs and tents. The other side is called The Resort. It is gated at the vehicle entrance and has a fence separating the 2 sides. A remote control is issued at check-in to access the area. The remote is much better than the key cards some resorts use. There are 2 gates in the fence that allows access from 1 side to the other. We were escorted to the resort side which easily accommodates large rigs. It has stamped, colored cement pads that are very level. Sites are staggered around so even though we shared a site entrance we did not feel crowded by the other RVs. Nice pool up by the office that we didn't partake of. Ice and firewood is available. There's really nothing around for groceries. There is an IGA in Glen Arbor but it is minimal and only for basics. Traverse City has several decent grocery stores but that's about a half hour away. We loved the area and the cg so much we plan to return. We camped at Indigo Bluffs RV Park & Resort in a Motorhome.

Sleeping Bear Dunes has several nice hiking trails. The 3/4 mile trail is quite crowded but views are fabulous at the top of the dunes and Lake Michigan. Pick up the pamphlet at the bottom to read about some interesting things along the way. Lots of good wineries on Old Mission and Leelanau peninsulas.

Wayne County Fairgrounds & RV Park, Belleville, Michigan

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

This is a no-frills park that works very well for folks looking to tour the Gerald Ford Presidential Library and Henry Ford venues. The park is an open field with assigned and marked grassy spots most of which are fhu. There are no trees except around the perimeter and the tent section. Roads are very dusty but otherwise it is clean and safe. All of Henry Ford activities are only about 20 minutes away so many folks transit for this reason. WiFi worked well and the 50 amp service was great considering the temps outside were pushing 100 with higher heat indexes. All 3 of our ACs and other appliances worked well without interruption. Fire rings are available though we had to ask for ours. Showed up quickly but we ended up not using it due to the heat. Management is extremely friendly and helpful. Reservation, check-in, and other services were always easy, quick, and pleasant. We will definitely stay here again. We camped at Wayne County Fairgrounds & RV Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Plan on at least 2 days for the Henry Ford Museum of Innovation, Greenfield Village, and the Factory Tour. We took 3 days and needed every minute of it. It is not just about Ford cars or even just cars. Thomas Edison, Robert Frost, ERA, Civil Rights, furniture, glass, etc. Gerald Ford Pres Library located in Ann Arbor is free and only 1 floor. Some artifacts, some Rosalyn Carter artifacts and a reasonable film is shown. Takes about 1 hour.

Cedarlane RV Park, Port Clinton, Ohio

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $58.00
Overall Rating:

This is mostly a seasonal cg very close to Lake Erie. Our assigned site was too tight and could not accommodate our awnings so the maintenance person, in conjunction with the owner on the phone, worked very hard to get us into a good site. The office people were mixed with a young girl being very pleasant but the older ladies not so pleasant. They were not happy about having to figure out another location for us but the maintenance man was persistent. After looking at several possibilities, we were eventually placed in a nice site. Really appreciated management's willingness to work with us. The water pressure is a little low so we used our water pump a lot. It was a very busy weekend so maybe that was the issue. Otherwise, the utilities worked well. The wind was blowing in our direction so the smell of garbage was a little overwhelming all weekend. We camped at Cedarlane RV Park in a Motorhome.

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

This is a great, up & coming cg. Very clean and well maintained. While very basic right now, the new owner is seeing his second season and has plans to plant trees, install a pool, and other amenities. This cg is located in the heart of Amish country so you need to be very careful on the road for buggies, bikes, and farm equipment. The ladies that checked us in were baking cookies and graciously gave us 2. That set this visit off on the right foot!! One M&M and the other peanut butter. Yum! Great walking around the cg and out to the main road which is about a half mile down a gravel road. Would definitely stay again. President Garfield's Presidential Library in Mentor, OH. President McKinley's Museum and First Ladies Museum in Canton, OH. Der Dutchman Restaurant is not much to write home about. Clean and hearty but not much selection and little taste. Sugar Valley Meats has an excellent selection of meats and products to choose from. Off the beaten path so service and prices are much better. Love the mustard eggs, jerky, and beef sticks. Our T-bones were tender and very tasty.

Harpers Ferry / Civil War Battlefields KOA, Harpers Ferry, West Virginia

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $78.00
Overall Rating:

I made the mistake of not reading RV Park Reviews before going to this KOA. Heed the warnings. We expected this to be a typical tourist area KOA: expensive and close sites. We picked it because it was mid-point from family and business needs. Will never stay again. There is a very nice pool and a few other things but, while the wooded areas look great for small TTs and tents, they put larger 5th wheels and motorhomes in a horrible gravelly, weedy, unlevel, tight area. We are a 45' motorcoach with a toad that had no business being accepted into this park. The roads throughout the park are not maintained with large gullies to high side trailers on. The sites have deep ruts at the grassy/mud ends from vehicles and trailers trying to enter and exit too tight sites. It's a mess. As we worked our way to our assigned spot we had to maneuver past a brick wall (the rest of the fence is wood so this is a telling sign that the area has been hit many times) with only about a 2" clearance then worry about hitting a pu truck parked on the other side. The site was unlevel and extremely tight. Went to the office and was told we could move to site 44 which was shorter, tighter and still unlevel. They do have about 5 really nice sites of which one was perfect for our size. While it was not occupied and would not be for several days they would not work with us to accommodate our needs. We took the site for use for 4 nights. The next day the manager lacking in conflict resolution skills, confronted me with the threat of eviction followed with the threat of calling the police to my husband. We called the company that owns this KOA location, Recreation Adventure Company, and never received a return call from the Director of Operations or anyone else after a promise that someone would definitely return the call. This cg, in its current configuration, can NOT manage big rigs. Heed the warnings posted. We camped at Harpers Ferry / Civil War Battlefields KOA in a Motorhome.

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

This park is not near Raleigh which is about an hour away. That being said, the pool was clean and warm. Umbrellas and chairs all in nice condition. There is a second smaller pool that was not yet open by the well equipped playground. I was told this second pool will be for adults only. Adult pool by the playground. Hmmm, not sure I appreciate this. Great walking park as the sites are in an oval with rows down the center and another section in the back with cabins. There are also 3 nice dog parks spread around the resort. We were assigned site 212 originally but due to lots of rain it had a lot of water still in it. Management efficiently accepted our request to move to 315. Nice corner site near the restrooms and laundry facilities. Would stay again if we had reason to be that far from Raleigh. Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $80.00
Overall Rating:

One of two cg in the immediate Wilmington area. We stay here anytime we are in the area to visit family. They seem to be improving it as the dog park was very nice this time. Clean, tubes and jumping bars, more importantly, grass to keep the dog from turning sandy black. Getting in and out of the park can be challenging. Traffic is very heavy on Market Street with 4 lanes of traffic and a suicide lane to assist in left turns. Much patience is needed with a 45' coach and a toad. Sigh. Overall Rating:

Nice waterfront cg. Sites were level and all were very clean. There is a boat ramp very near the property so all water activities are available. Nice large swimming area with a picnic area and sand. Looked like great fishing as people were pulling in some good sizes and varieties. Because of the waterfront, there is no sewer but a dump station is available. That being said, the turn into the station is a little tight. Sites are gravel so if you are heavy make sure to put boards down under your jacks first.
