High Plains Camping, Oakley, Kansas

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $36.00
Overall Rating:

As a campground for an overnight or two, High Plains is a great choice. Entry is an easy ride just off I-70. Camp sites are mostly pull through and sufficiently long for larger rigs. AT&T LTE works well here. Campsites are clean. We camped at High Plains Camping in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

The restaurant on site, Captain Jack's was a surprising treat for an overnight stop. Crab cakes were as good as anything we've had on the Eastern shore (yes in Kansas!) and the burger selections of elk, buffalo, Kobe and regular beef were terrific.

Old Highway 86 Campground, Blue Eye, Missouri

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $21.00
Overall Rating:

Old Highway 86 is a jewel in the COE campground system. The sites are beautifully laid out, spacious, and the location on a spit of land into the lake gives nearly every site a great view. All services worked well. Interior roads are relatively easy to navigate. Those with a long RV will want to pick sites carefully to avoid difficulties in backing into their site. Campground staff were pleasant, knowledgeable about the area and very helpful. AT&T LTE worked well here. We camped at Old Highway 86 Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Fleming Park/Blue Springs Campground, Blue Springs, Missouri

Date of Stay: April, 2017 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Blue Springs is a very nice park with good access to the Kansas City region. The roads are a bit narrow, but easily navigable with our fifth wheel and large truck. We were there in a period with very heavy rainstorms and while the sites are gravel and stable, the grassy areas are very soft and driving off the road edge or site edges should be carefully avoided. Hosts were pleasant and helpful, campground was very clean. Except for the sites in the 50s, most sites were at least somewhat unlevel and we would not recommend for larger rigs. Sites 51-59 however were well designed, easy to get into and out of and big enough for all but the very largest rigs. AT&T cell service was quite good in the campground. We camped at Fleming Park/Blue Springs Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Springhill COE, Barling, Arkansas

Date of Stay: April, 2017 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

Springhill is another well designed COE park. Campground roads were worn, but in good repair. Interior roads were easy to navigate. Sites were not all level, but we were able to level easily. Many sites were directly along a creek which feeds into the Arkansas River with great views. Some things showed wear, including the picnic table on our site. Fishing and mountain biking are popular in this park. We camped at Springhill COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Nearby Fort Smith offered a number of activities for understanding the history of the area and its relationship to the "Indian Territories" (modern day Oklahoma). Don't miss the National Historic Site with its excellent presentations on the role of Fort Smith in the settlement of the west. In addition, we found good shopping, entertainment and dining in the region.

Arrowhead State Park, Canadian, Oklahoma

Date of Stay: April, 2017 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed in the Turkey Flats section of the park. Sites are modern, very spacious and immaculate. Pads in this section of the park are concrete and mostly level. Half of the sites have sewer hookups, there is a dump station at another campground in the park. There is lake access to Lake Eufala via a path from the campground. Both pull-throughs and back in sites are available. Campground is easy access to 69. Although there were a few long term campers in the campground, there were no signs of neglect nor accumulation of stuff around individual campers. The campground roads were well maintained and easy to navigate. This campground is in a nice park with equestrian facilities, hiking trails, a golf course and a marina. The surrounding region is quite rural, but there is fuel and a small store nearby. Nearest full service town in McAlester about 20 miles away. We camped at Arrowhead State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Austin Lone Star RV Resort, Austin, Texas

Date of Stay: April, 2017 - $55.00
Overall Rating:

We chose Austin Lone Star for its proximity to Austin. We paid a premium for a portion of our stay because SXSW was going on while we were there. The campground is located along the I-35 Frontage Rd. Both 35 and the Frontage Road were under construction during our stay there with cement barriers making campground entry and exit a bit difficult, but manageable. The construction meant that the traffic was unrelenting except early morning weekends and late overnight. Unfortunately there were numerous other issues with the campground itself during our stay. The pool was out of service for upgrade during our stay. No reduction was offered nor were we notified of the closure. While we were there, we experienced difficulties with power on the site. If this had been a short term issue, we would have been mildly annoyed, but we were not pleased when other long term campers informed us that this was a long term intermittent issue that had not been resolved. Finally, the campground security was a serious concern. While there, there were two incidents, one where the police conducted a multi-hour search for a suspect who had been sighted at the business next door to the campground. The second involved a theft on a site that occurred over many hours when someone from the nearby homeless encampment came in, clipped the lock and stole multiple bikes in individual visits. This was possible even while there were supposedly two security patrols in the campground and cameras in place. We camped at Austin Lone Star RV Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Hickory Creek COE, Lewisville, Texas

Date of Stay: March, 2017 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Hickory Creek is a lovely COE campground with good access to Dallas on reasonably priced mass transit with a station within five miles of the campground. Road access to Dallas on 35 is currently under heavy construction making driving in more challenging. This campground is well maintained, sites are large and lovely, interior roads are easy to navigate and well laid out. Given its proximity to Dallas, the campground was a wonderful peaceful place to visit the area. Camphosts were welcoming and helpful with information both about the campground and the area itself. The views from the sites in the campground are beautiful. As other reviewers have noted, this campground does close all access at night. While we were there, it appeared that the closing time has been updated to 11 PM. We camped at Hickory Creek COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Katy Lake RV Resort, Katy, Texas

Date of Stay: March, 2017 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Katy Lake is a clean, relatively new, well maintained campground with good access to the west Houston area and it's surroundings. We stayed in a pull through site which was laid out well, both easy to get into and out of. The sitting area was small, but sufficient. Sites were not spacious, but large enough to put out awnings and sit without being on top of neighbors. There are a large number of long term workers in the park, but the park does not allow campers or sites to deteriorate as we have seen elsewhere. Common areas, including the small lake in the center, the pool and hot tub area and the meeting rooms are clean and well maintained. The large dog park and pet washing station were grassy, maintained and a very nice addition. Security on site is via gate access. The park has obviously had some trouble with standing water on some sites, but at the time we were there it appeared that they had resolved almost all of these issues. There was nothing that caused us concern nor detracted from our view that this was a very good private park for seeing the Houston area. We would stay again. We camped at Katy Lake RV Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Sam Houston Jones State Park, Lake Charles, Louisiana

Date of Stay: March, 2017 - $21.00
Overall Rating:

This is a lovely state park, but unfortunately the campground maintenance has been neglected far too long. There are two sections to the campground. Section 1 has longer sites created by combining two older sites to create a single longer pull through. The sites are poorly configured. Site 1, our site, was at the end of a loop turn and directly in front of the dump station. This left vehicles coming and going from the dump site and our picnic table within 6 feet of our rig both on one side and behind. The sewer connection was in the driveway and buried under mud. In addition, the site was dirty, muddy and not level. The bath house was shut down "for repairs" and a temporary bathhouse was there, but was in sad shape from age and lack of maintenance. Campground 2 was in somewhat better shape, but is unsuitable for longer rigs. Their bath house did appear to be functional and the roadways in the campground are better maintained. We camped at Sam Houston Jones State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Bayou Segnette State Park, Westwego, Louisiana

Date of Stay: February, 2017 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

This is one of our favorite campgrounds in the country. Huge sites, impeccably maintained, quiet refuge from the city. Easy access to the French Quarter via the ferry. We were here for Mardi Gras on this trip and loved the ability to see all the fun while being able to retreat to this lovely park in the evening. We camped at Bayou Segnette State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Drive the twenty minutes to Algiers Point, park on street or in the open pay lot nearby. Ferries run on the half and quarters and are a quick ten minute trip across. Bring your bike or dog along to explore the city (no cars).

Fort Pickens Campground, Pensacola, Florida

Date of Stay: February, 2017 - $26.00
Overall Rating:

Nice park, reasonably large sites, bathhouses were modern and immaculate. Electric and water are a treat in a national park. Loved the sites to see inside the park. We had a couple of issues which keep this from being s 10. First, distance to other area attractions off the peninsula is longer than we'd like. More importantly, the site lengths are challenging. We saw only a couple sites that could accommodate a 40' RV. Tree heights are not trimmed well for taller rigs. We managed to avoid tree damage because we have a lot of experience towing, but we saw several RVs with damage from the overhead trees. Loops B through E are better in this regard, but the sites are shorter and harder to back into. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Ho-Hum RV Park, Carrabelle, Florida

Date of Stay: February, 2017 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

As someone in the office told us, Ho-Hum is on the slower side of Florida. The campground is the only one in the area right on the water and as a result the views and fishing are spectacular. The owners are clearly working hard to upgrade and improve the campground. In 2017, they have added wifi, replaced the utilities and added a propane filling station. Sites were large enough for our 40' fifth wheel & 5500, but the inland sites tended to be close together. There were sites that were wide enough for side porches, a rare thing. And the sites along the water were quite wide. Sites are cleaned upon leaving and roads are raked daily. Trees are trimmed to allow even the tallest rigs to camp easily. We would stay again, but would limit our stay to a few nights. We camped at Ho-Hum RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Bryn Mawr Ocean Resort, St Augustine Beach, Florida

Date of Stay: January, 2017 - $36.00
Overall Rating:

We enjoyed our stay at Bryn Mawr. Location right on the beach was fantastic. Sites were reasonably sized and the decks on most RV sites were a lovely bonus. Campground was very dog friendly and the ability to walk endlessly on the beach with our pet was wonderful. Two things keep this campground from being a favorite for us. First, while the sites are reasonably sized, the roads are very narrow. We were able to get in and out, but it was a challenge with our 40' fifth wheel and Ram 5500. Second, our arrival here was not without challenges. We called ahead to check that our site was ready, was assured it was, only to be called back shortly to tell us that the site wasn't ready. We ended up waiting in a parking lot down the street for over an hour while they waited for the previous renter to leave. Office staff regularly didn't return phone calls as well both before and during our stay. Ground staff maintained the facility well, so a definite plus on that front. While we loved the campground, the narrow roads will likely mean we won't stay again, however if we were in a smaller rig this would definitely be a return spot. We camped at Bryn Mawr Ocean Resort in a Fifth Wheel.
