Pere Marquette State Park, Grafton, Illinois

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $10.00
Overall Rating:

I have stayed here years before this recent encounter. The campground and facilities are in a word "tired." While the restroom and showers are serviceable they are very outdated. The showers were almost clean but not quite. The high point in the showers seems to be the drains in the mens shower/bathroom. The water simply ran away from the drain. The campsites are all gravel and the biggest sites that will accommodate 40' rigs were not all level. Reserve America has taken over the registration and reservation system for this park and it is not as accurate as it should be. Make sure that you read the length of the RV Pad itself not the overall length including from front to back. I had mistakingly reserved site 22 which lists the overall length of the site as 47' but if you read closely you will see that the useable length is 25'. We also found that there are many power pedestals that have electrical difficulties and they cannot be fixed. So, at least at this time there are many unserviceable sites. 50 amp is only at certain sites. Water spigots are dispersed through out the facility but you will need at least 100' of hose if you plan to reach them without moving your RV. There is a dumpsite as well. So, if your grey/effluent volume is expected to be more than your lengths stay be sure to bring a portable wast tank to take to the sewage dump. Each site has a picnic table and fire pit. My overall rating would have been higher if the shower/bathroom facility was up to my expectations. On a scale of 1-10 I would give the park a six. We camped at Pere Marquette State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Make sure you go to nearby Grafton for a wonderful meal or a simple catfish sandwich. There are four wineries in the area. For an evening with drinks go "The Landing." The Landing is a historic boat yard that once services paddlewheelers plying the river and during WWII PT boats were built there. The entire venue overlooks the beautiful Illinois River.

Beantown Campground, Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $44.00
Overall Rating:

We came here to explore Door County. The price of the campsite was on the high end of our comfort zone but still very cheap for Door County. Mosquitos are a problem here. If the wind isn't blowing they descend upon you quickly. If you like sitting outdoors in the evening bring a screen room. The park is absolutely packed this time of year so expect some noise but nothing excessive (at least for us). Piggly Wiggly (the Pig) is the only full service grocery in the area and is located in Sister Bay about 15 minutes away. The park store is very basic and sells candy, pop and water by the bottle. The swimming pool is very large and quite clean. However, it can get very crowded. We camped at Beantown Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

To clarify the site length, I was able to pull my 40' motorhome and tow dolly into my site and still had room to easily park my car in the site. Make sure you go to Peninsula Park for the views and White Fish Dunes for the beach. However, if you have a dog you will have to walk a long distance to bring it to Beach #3 which is dog friendly. Make sure your wallet is full when you get here. Things are fairly expensive but worth it.

Fort Pickens Campground, Pensacola, Florida

Date of Stay: December, 2016 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

Great Park, sand lots, miles of pristine beach and ocean. Sites can be hard to negotiate so make sure you review the park map before choosing a site. Hint: the corners of the loops are easier to get into with a motorhome. We camped at Fort Pickens Campground in a Motorhome.

It is eight miles into the island stores and 12 miles with a one dollar toll into Pensacola for decent grocery shopping. Hint: buy booze before arriving as it is very expensive there.

Tips for other Campers:

After registering and being assigned a site walk to it prior to driving to it. The ends of the loops were very tight for a 40' motor home. I was instructed as to how to get to our site but had I taken a different route it would have been easier to negotiate.

The camp store has RV supplies, some food, wine, beer, and candy. Pool was nice but not heated, no hot tub. Very close walk to the beach.

Small but very nice campground. Parking our 40' motorhome was not a problem. Lots of good hiking trails, beautiful views and in proximity of Fayetteville and the University (40 minutes). We camped at Lake Fort Smith State Park in a Motorhome.

Toad Suck Campground COE, Conway, Arkansas

This was a motorcycle camping trip. The park is nice but a little noisy in a tent. Barge traffic on the river and lock and dam horns blared all night. We camped at Toad Suck Campground COE in a Tent.
