Jonathan Dickinson State Park, Hobe Sound, Florida

Date of Stay: November, 2017 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

This park is huge. We are making the rounds of all the parks in Florida and this is one of the biggest we have hit yet. Overall we enjoyed our stay, but not out favorite. First, the pros: *We stayed at the River Campground and the boat launch is right there. Great for launching the Kayaks or a boat on a trailer. *There is a FANTASTIC MTB trail system that is well maintained and has trails for all skill levels. There is also a very nice 2-3 mile paved trail. *The camp store/rental shop is very nice and staffed by truly helpful folks. *Sites are very level, crushed shell, very firm. The cons: *The sites have zero privacy and are surrounded by basically fields of weeds. *There is only 1 dump station, far from our site. *Sites are very tight. We camped at Jonathan Dickinson State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Stone Mountain Park Campground, Stone Mountain, Georgia

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $48.00
Overall Rating:

This review could be way over the word limit due to the bad taste in our mouths, but I'll keep it short as I can. We really wanted to enjoy our stay at this park. We booked for 4 nights and were looking forward to a nice relaxing vacation. The location of this campground is fantastic. In the hills of Georgia and wrapped around the side of a nice peaceful lake. There are lots of little things to see inside the park and lots of good hiking. It's a very large campground with 400+ sites, but each area was about the same as any other campground so it did not feel especially large unless you go from one end to the other.

To sum up the very long list of things that are NOT good about this campground: *Poorly, dangerously maintained roads. *Some sites that are so unlevel that nothing short of a lumberyard could level your trailer. *Office staff that have no clue what they are doing here. *Old, poorly cleaned wash houses. *Extra $15 fee to "park." *Sewage hookup on site that could not handle the flow of a normal tank dump, which lead to a disgusting overflow problem. *Sites crammed up against one another.

Anyway, we won't be going back. We camped at Stone Mountain Park Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Lots of places to hike and sight-see in the park. The little village attraction was kind of boring.

Fort Clinch State Park, Fernandina Beach, Florida

Date of Stay: January, 2017 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

Yet another great example of Florida State Parks! Like another reviewer, we were lucky to get a last minute reservation at this busy campground for the weekend. We stayed on the River side and the sites were nice and large and mostly private with lots of tree cover. We were steps away from the River/inlet. The facilities were sparkly and large, with nice showers, laundry, etc. We rode our bikes on the trails in the park (quite a bit more technical riding than we like) and outside the park. The trails outside the park are numerous for bikers and hikers/birders. Just a great place for being outdoors. We rode our bikes from the River side to the beach camping side and found two wonderful hammocks on the beach to lay in for a spell. Saw the sunrise from those hammocks! Great campground! We camped at Fort Clinch State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Lake Kissimmee State Park, Lake Wales, Florida

Date of Stay: January, 2017 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed 2 nights at Lake Kissimmee State Park and will definitely do it again as we live fairly close.

We found it to be quite enjoyable; it's off the beaten path, very large (the park itself) and has nice private camp sites with plenty of room. Most sites are compacted crushed shell and sand, very level with plenty of room for a screen room or tent plus chairs and whatever else you bring. They each have a fire ring and picnic table. Some sites (maybe 15 %) have concrete pads (I guess for Handicap access or large rigs). The bathroom/shower facilities are very close no matter what site you have and very clean.

We are bike riders and absolutely loved the hiking trails. There are 2 trails that are each 6+ mile loops with many connector trails. These loops are very well marked and they provide a nice accurate map. The Trails are mostly wide pine forest with few roots and some sandy places but very few places that might require you to get off your bike and walk it. We loved riding them! We saw many deer while out. Also, do check out the Cow Camp, it's a slice of FL history.

On weekends, the lake is awash with Airboats, so you can pretty much constantly hear them roaring in the background, but we found it to be pretty benign, kind of like having a railroad track nearby.

There is no wifi except at the "general store" and cell coverage is very spotty, but for a weekend getaway, that's perfect. We camped at Lake Kissimmee State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Highland Park Fish Camp, Deland, Florida

Date of Stay: December, 2016 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

This seems to be mostly a place to live and/or a place to launch a boat. We did get a last minute reservation but I suppose that's due to the fact that it's not a destination?

We got a site next to a rusted out trailer with no wheels and TV blaring all day/night and across from someone who obviously has lived there a long time. At one point the water shut off for a while as a couple of guys shouted back and forth across the grounds to each other about how to fix it.

I think the site listed a restroom/shower facility but we never found it.

The site was just wide enough to fit our tiny trailer and park our vehicle cross ways in front of it. Not room for anything else. No trees or shade at all. We camped at Highland Park Fish Camp in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

If your destination is launching a boat to go fishing then this place is for you, if you are trying to find a nice place to camp, probably not.
