What an amazing park! Clean and well maintained, sites are generally quite level. Campground roads are smooth and level, easy to walk or bike. Shower houses are cleaned surprisingly often by contracted service and in our experience always nicely clean. Was surprised that there were only 2 shower houses but campground was at full capacity while we were there and we never waited for a shower nor did we ever see anyone else doing so. There's also a centrally located restrooms-only building. Campground has a variety of site options and honestly there's not a bad site to be had. I believe most every area has some reservable as well as non-reservable sites. (Note: this is an extremely popular park, reservation sites are strongly suggested.) Several waterfront sites with stunning views but because of the size of Carlyle Lake (largest lake in IL) the breeze coming off the lake can be really strong at times. Some avoid these sites because it can hamper your ability to have a campfire. Water view sites across the road have great views. Some of the sites back up to a wooded area that edges on lake and I'm sure these would have some excellent wildlife viewing potential. So pretty much every area of the park has its own unique attributes! Previous mixed reviews on staff friendliness is understandable - my favorite gatehouse fellow is warm and personable and a great source of info. The other couple are less easy-going with a definite lean towards an authoritative air. I think you just have to get on their good side and then you're fine! High on my favorites list is the convenience of this campground to anything you could need. Shopping, dining and church are nearby and easy to get to. The only drawbacks I could note is that the temp of showers is pretty unpredictable and can go from warm to very hot with no notice. (OK for adults but for kids ???) Internet service was nonexistent on our site (attendant told us waterfront sites don't pick up). Neither was big deal for us. LOVE this campground! We camped at Dam West Recreation Area COE in a Motorhome.
Fish House Restaurant is a great place to eat nearby. We carried out from Wheelans BBQ shack also very good. But our fave if you want to drive 10-15 min is Crossroads Restaurant in nearby Keyesport. Not a fancy atmosphere but the best fried chicken EVER!!!
