Oak Plantation Campground, Charleston, South Carolina

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $58.00
Overall Rating:

This is our second time to stay here. Overall the campground is nice and, except for the brutal sun (no trees around our site), we enjoyed our stay. The utilities were well-placed and all worked well. Our site was level and wide enough for our coach but not overly wide though we didn't feel too close to our neighbors. The interior roads were easy to navigate our 45' DP. The campground has numerous trash bins throughout the park and they have recycling bins near the entrance. Others have complained about the speed bumps. They are clearly a nuisance but we managed. Others have also complained about not being able to turn left safely onto Hwy 17. This is a real problem but I don't think the campground owners can do anything about it. Just always turn right! The staff was generally nice except for the young man who checked us in. He was downright rude and I told him so. I only saw him once during the week we were there so he probably only works weekends. He was really the only negative during our stay. We might stay here again but there are other campgrounds we prefer. We camped at Oak Plantation Campground in a Motorhome.

James Island County Park, Charleston, South Carolina

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $57.00
Overall Rating:

This is a fantastic campground that sits within a park run by Charleston County. The park has many amenities: swimming, a splash park for kids, walking and biking trails, and more. The sites are shaded with well-placed hook-ups. Access roads are a bit tight for a big rig but manageable. We had a pull-thru site (#97) on a corner - easy in and out. Trash receptacles and recycling bins are conveniently placed throughout the campground. Access to the park is off Central Park Road and Riverland Drive. Both roads are narrow with low, overhanging trees. Our Class A is 12'10" high and we scraped several trees going in and out of the park. When leaving the park there is a tight right turn from Riverland onto Central Park which we made fine with our big rig but only because there was no oncoming traffic on either road. We spent a week here and were able to see a lot of the Charleston sights. Overall, this is a great park and we will definitely return. We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Downtown Charleston is an easy 15-20 minute drive from the campground. There is also a shuttle bus that will take you downtown in the morning and bring you back in the afternoon. It's $10/person round trip. There is plenty of shopping and restaurants close to the campground including a Publix.

North Myrtle Beach RV Resort and Dry Dock Marina, Little River, South Carolina

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $72.00
Overall Rating:

This is a new RV park. On the plus side, the sites are all concrete, level and have pretty good spacing between sites. The campground is located on the Intracoastal Waterway near Cherry Grove SC adjacent to a marina and dry dock boat storage. There is a beautiful pool and water slide for the kids. Trash is picked up every day at your site. We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. The campground has WiFi which we didn't use and cable TV which we did and found acceptable. The utilities are well-placed and worked fine during our stay. On the negative side, there is no shade anywhere. They have planted a few trees but even when these are full grown, they will provide no relief from the sun. Also, the campground does not recycle. Overall the park is nice but on the expensive side. Guess that's to be expected in a tourist town like Myrtle Beach. I doubt we will return - unless it's in the winter - mainly because of the lack of shade. We camped at North Myrtle Beach RV Resort and Dry Dock Marina in a Motorhome.

Wilmington KOA, Wilmington, North Carolina

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $76.00
Overall Rating:

There are not many choices in the Wilmington area for a large Class A like ours but overall we found this to a good place to spend a couple of weeks. We had a nice pull-thru site that was just long enough for our MH and toad. Utilities worked fine and were well-positioned. They have cable TV and WiFi but we didn't use either. Trash is picked up daily at your site and they have recycling bins - which we really like - in the central garbage collection area. We were in Wilmington during an unusually hot period (mid to upper 90's). Our site faced east and we had to keep our front shade closed a good bit of the day. There are virtually no trees around so the sun was pretty brutal. There is a nice dog park for pets and a jumping pad and a train ride for the kids. We found the park staff to be very friendly and helpful. Overall this is a typical KOA park - overpriced and nothing special, but it can handle the largest of rigs which is important for us. Interesting fact about this campground: A friend of ours who was in the movie industry in Wilmington years ago said he worked on a movie that was filmed at this KOA. The movie was about a nudist colony!! Never got the name of the movie though. The campground is on a very busy main road. The entrance is between a Speedway gas station and a car wash. The KOA sign is not very big. When leaving the park turning left is almost impossible. But there are several ways to get back to the interstate and other highways by turning right and heading toward town. We camped at Wilmington KOA in a Motorhome.

Lakewood RV Resort (55+ park), Flat Rock, North Carolina

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

This is a beautiful, 55+ park located near Hendersonville and Asheville NC. There are many year-round residents but all sites are kept neat and well-maintained and people were friendly. Lots of dogs but owners keep them on leashes and picked up after them. The lower level has long, spacious and level pull thru and back-in sites that can easily handle the biggest of rigs. We had a pull thru with a concrete patio. AT&T cell reception was OK, but not great, and we had no trouble getting consistent Internet and streaming TV. There are 2 dumpsters for garbage and a third dumpster for recycling. As others have said, when exiting the park there is an island at the top of the hill. It is too narrow to the right of the island for my rig so I stayed to the left where it is wider and had no problems. Lakewood is conveniently located near Hendersonville and Asheville. Plenty of interesting things to see and do. We spent 6 nights here for some much needed R&R following selling our house and moving everything into storage. We will stay here again when in the area. We camped at Lakewood RV Resort (55+ park) in a Motorhome.

Jenny Wiley State Resort Park, Prestonsburg, Kentucky

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

This is a beautiful state park located in Eastern KY near Prestonsburg. The campground is just a small part of large, 2,900 acre reserve. The campground is clean and well-maintained. We were here over Memorial Day weekend, one of their busiest, and the grounds stayed in pretty good shape. All sites have electric (50/30/20 amp) and water but only B and C loops have sewer. Sites are generally well-spaced and we didn't feel like we were right on top of our neighbors. Cell service in this area is poor. We have AT&T and found it spotty and weak on B and C loops and non-existent on A loop. We could usually send and receive EMails and texts while on B loop but often could not make a call. Other campers reported Verizon service was poor too. We did not use the bathhouses. There are 3 loops, A, B, and C. "A" loop is flat with level sites while B and C loops are located on pretty steep hills. A few of the B and C loop sites are level but most are not. B059, for example where we were originally assigned, was too steep for us to level our 45' motorhome. I think smaller RV's could use sites like this but larger rigs cannot. We found the staff to be very friendly and accommodating. They worked with us to move to B039, which is much more level, despite the park being sold out for the holiday weekend. We were here for a family reunion and would probably stay here again in the future as long as we could get a site that can handle our MH. We camped at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park in a Motorhome.

Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park, Jacksonville, Florida

Date of Stay: January, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Hanna Park is a beautiful city park located northeast of Jacksonville on the Atlantic ocean. The interior roads are narrow and winding and can be a challenge for big rigs. But we were able to negotiate our 45'MH just fine by taking it slow. The map provided by the park codes each site by the size RV it can handle. This isn't always accurate. Some of the 40' max sites could handle our coach. Recommend you tour park before deciding on site. The park has many live oaks which provide wonderful shade and many sites have foliage in between for privacy. The park is well-maintained and camp hosts are available and helpful. We did not use the bathrooms or showers so cannot comment. Our site (#171) is a back-in with a view of the lake. This is a very popular park and was very busy on weekends. But during the week, it was quiet with few campers. Note: The park has recycling bins for plastic, cans and paper only - no glass. We camped at Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park in a Motorhome.

Corbin / Laurel Lake KOA, Corbin, Kentucky

Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $46.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed 1 night on our way back to TN. The site was very nice though we did not like having to share our patio with another family. We had a major problem with the electrical on this site. We could not get 50 amps from the connection as advertised. We also tried the adjacent site (shared same pedestal) and had the same problem. We told the office of the problem and were told they would send someone to check it out. No one ever came. Ended up running the generator all night. We mentioned the problem to the office again the following morning. They apologized but honestly didn't seem too concerned. We camped at Corbin / Laurel Lake KOA in a Motorhome.

Jones Station RV Park, Mebane, North Carolina

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

Nice, relatively new, campground with large pull through sites. Our site, #31, was muddy in places and ground was soft so we had trouble getting level. Other sites looked better. Overall the grounds are well landscaped. We camped at Jones Station RV Park in a Motorhome.

Boone KOA, Boone, North Carolina

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $29.00
Overall Rating:

Nice campground nestled in the mountains near Boone NC. Our wooded site was level and plenty big for our 45' coach and tow vehicle. WiFi was spotty even though we were right in front of the office. Otherwise no complaints. We'll definitely come back and explore the area more. We camped at Boone KOA in a Motorhome.
