Soliel du'Coeur, Bandera, Texas

Date of Stay: November, 2018 - $13.00
Overall Rating:

Just a clean, quiet little park with wonderful views of the Texas Hill Country. Lots of shade trees and level, pull through slots. All hookups worked as they should. A GREAT bargain. Owner is super helpful and guides you in as you come into the park. Deer run all over the place if you like critters. Few of the amenities of a resort. The wi-fi works pretty well, water pressure is good and the well water is clean and soft. OTA TV is not great; 2 broadcast channels plus a few others. Lots of room to park. Spots are level, gravel and lots of room with picnic tables. Nice place to spend the weekend and easy to get into Bandera which has plenty of tourist stuff and lots of good restaurants. We camped at Soliel du'Coeur in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Bandera is the Cowboy Capital of the World. Good restaurants. The OST is famous and features a wall full of John Wayne pics and the place has a cowboy vibe. Tourist shops abound. Motorcyclists make Bandera a destination with the 3 sisters (RR335, RR336 and RR337) a favorite loop to ride and take in breathtaking views of the Hill Country and its winding roads.

Utopia River Retreat, Utopia, Texas

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed at the Utopia River Retreat during a month of record rains. The retreat is on a beautiful stretch of the Sabinal River which definitely is in flood stage although it didn't affect the camp grounds. Our spot was level and it was easy to hook up. If you have 30A in your trailer, bring an adapter cord but the manager said they have them available. We use AT&T and had a couple bars of 4G LTE. Wifi is pretty decent. The Retreat is geared to folks staying in cabins and we were the only RV on site. It is quiet and very peaceful place to stay. OTA TV is limited to basically two channels; each with a couple subchannels with o major networks so a satellite dish is a plus. The town of Utopia is where this Retreat is located; about 25 miles from D'Hanis or Bandera and is not listed in the choices for entering a new camp ground. Utopia itself has some antique stores and the Los Maples restaurant which is a great place to eat Texas food! The camp ground is dog friendly. We camped at Utopia River Retreat in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Utopia was the site for the movie starring Robert Duvall titled "Seven Days In Utopia" and was set on a neat 9 hole golf course. Bring your clubs! There are two restaurants in Utopia and the Los Maples is a staple. Main Street Utopia is a great little shop with an amazing variety of vintage goods (wife loved it). You are just a short drive to Garner State Park or the Los Maples Natural Area.

Big Oak River Camp, Camp Wood, Texas

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Thought we would camp here again after our last very positive experience and the place is much busier as it is peak season. Prices in peak season are $40 for full RV hookups. Set up is a joy as the pads are pull through and concrete and level. The park is very well kept. This time, the camp store is open and stocked with a few basic grocery items and lots of junk food. Penny, the owner, is friendly and the camp is well run. The main change from last time is the wifi internet access which has been upgraded. We can stream Netflix movies on our laptop. This is kind of rare in an RV park. There is minimal shade in the RV spots so hopefully your A/C is working in tip top shape. Love this park! We camped at Big Oak River Camp in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

There is a newish BBQ place just north of the park on Hwy 55 called King's Texas Smokehouse which has great sandwiches and you can buy some premium Angus beef steaks as well or pork for the grill back at the park. If you come in from the east, take Hwy 90 to Hwy 55 as RR337 isn't much fun with an RV in tow; canyon twisties are more appropriate for a sport bike than a fifth wheel!

A Country Breeze, Somerset, Texas

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

This park is outside Somerset Texas which means there is little to see or do in the immediate area. If you want to tourist in San Antonio, it would be a good place to hang out. They accept the Texas Saver card you can get free by calling 1-800-657-6555. The card gets you a 10 percent discount at participating RV parks. This is also a Good Sam park. All the parking spots are level concrete with full hook ups. Most have 50/30/20 but our spot only had 30A service. Most of the folks at the park are full time and most have pretty clean areas. The grounds in general are nicely manicured. There is a lot of space between RV spots. The only negative is there isn't a lot of shade due to the type of trees that grow in the area. I did check out the combo laundry/shower area and it was nice and clean and actually had a vending machine. The folks who operate the camp are experienced and friendly owners. There isn't much to do once you are there so be prepared to go out and explore. The park is quiet and there is no road noise. AT&T phone reception was poor but you could make calls (1 bar). The wifi was pretty spotty. They have cable but I didn't hook up as we got 77 OTA channels which included all the major networks. We camped at A Country Breeze in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

The Cafe Vallarta Mexican restaurant is near and they have super Mexican food and good hours. On the other side of Somerset (about 5 miles) is a Dairy Queen for those with a sweet tooth and a Pizzla place called Constantinos with some of the finest pizza and Italian food you will find anywhere. Do try the pizza; you can call ahead and take it out.

Camp Sionito, Bandera, Texas

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

Park is located in the Community of Christ church camp and there are no level spaces. Spaces are very close but there is almost no one staying here so the feeling is that you have the place to yourself. Every possible recreational amenity is available, pool, Medina River access, play areas for little kids and the park managers are very friendly. The place is relaxing and long walks with the pooches are a hoot. I would have rated the place higher except spaces are not level so some work must be done and the spaces are a bit too narrow making ingress and egress a bit difficult although almost all spaces are pull through. The community bathrooms/showers are very clean and there are tons of picnic tables. The park is closed to RVs during the time school is out; I believe June through August as the camp is used by a church groups during that period. It is an easy drive into Bandera if you want to have a meal in a restaurant. The park is very pet friendly. We camped at Camp Sionito in a Fifth Wheel.

BECS Store & RV Park, Concan, Texas

Date of Stay: March, 2018 - $21.00
Overall Rating:

Staff is super friendly and park is immaculate. RV spots are very level and gravel and each has a covered picnic table and BBQ pit. Spots are spacious and the environment quiet and peaceful. There is GOOD Wifi and the showers/restrooms are private and very clean. Poked my head in the laundry room and it is similarly clean. There is a small store with some RV basics and such. The park offers 15 channels of good quality cable. Could not see much OTA TV channels. Most spaces are pull through and the park is animal friendly and offers plastic clean ups at pet stations. To compound the pleasure of our stay, the weather was GORGEOUS! Water is via a community RO system and very clean. Pressure is pretty good. We camped at BECS Store & RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

While fairly remote, there is easy access to the Frio River via Garner State Park. There are decent restaurants in Leakey, about 15 miles away and Neils restaurant is in Concan and is supposed to be pretty good. Take charcoal as the BBQ pits invite outdoor cooking and the covered picnic tables keep you out of the sun.

Quiet Texas RV Park - Hondo, Hondo, Texas

Date of Stay: November, 2017 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

Would have been perfect but ironically, the maintenance guy was out all three mornings we stayed at EXACTLY 8AM with a leaf blower. Vacation / 8AM don't seem to go well. Otherwise, very clean and professional with great spots to park. We camped at Quiet Texas RV Park - Hondo in a Fifth Wheel.

South Main RV Park, Houston, Texas

Date of Stay: April, 2017 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

Staying in the park from end of April till towards end of June while visiting a medical facility very near the park. Park is at the intersection of Main and Loop 610 which makes vehicle noise a fact of life. Slots are tight and close but folks are very quiet and you soon get used to the constant traffic. The area is very convenient for the Medical Center and NRG stadium. Many slots are heavily treed and parking is on a level gravel pad with a concrete pad adjacent for your chairs and grill. Park is pet friendly and has a prayer garden. The office carries some food and RV basics for sale but prices are better at the local groceries and Walmart. No pull through slots are available. Local management is on site and responsive and friendly. The WiFi works but not as well as my mobile hot spot. Water pressure is fine. Cable TV is provided with quite a few channels but a few are sketchy at best; especially two broadcast channels are always full of snow. If you use a satellite dish, the overhanging trees and close adjacent RVs may make reception a challenge and you should work with management to find an un-shaded slot for view of the southern sky. The park has a very safe feel and if you need to visit the Medical Center Area, I suggest you give this park a shot. We camped at South Main RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

The local Walmart down Bellfort Rd. has RV supplies but is not a Super Walmart so be prepared to grocery shop at the Randalls supermarket in the same shopping area or Target or Krogers, all under 2 miles from the RV park. Other than Dennys and Golden Corral, most all other restaurants in the immediate area are fast food.

Big Oak River Camp, Camp Wood, Texas

Date of Stay: February, 2017 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

Park has pull through RV spaces with full hook ups, guest cabins with all the bells and whistles, camping shells with A/C and electricity and spots for tents with electricity. Camp is super clean, folks are friendly, the place is very quiet, dogs welcome and the park has a ton of amenities such as pool, basketball court, driving range, kiddy playground, etc. The camp also has super clean/separate mens and ladies bath houses. They have four wi-fi signals available for use by campers. Over the air TV is pretty limited due to lack of proximity to TV stations. DirecTV is available in guest cabins only. The camp store was closed during our stay as it is the off season so they don't stock things but supplies can be had just down the road in Camp Wood where there are a few restaurants and a gas station as well. Big Oak is a fine place to spend some time! We camped at Big Oak River Camp in a Truck Camper.

Shady Oaks RV Park, Rockdale, Texas

Date of Stay: February, 2017 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

No level spots, had to try a couple spots to find an electrical outlet that worked. No on-site manager. Money taken and key given by front desk of the Comfort Inn next door, No gravel, only dirt/grass and MUD. Dogs barking all night, RVs on site are mostly long term with lots of junk around sites. On-site roads are not paved nor gravel, just mud. Their site says cable and wifi and there were none. We camped at Shady Oaks RV Park in a Truck Camper.

Good news is there is a 24 hour Walmart directly across the street open 24/7. If you like to shop at Walmart, you are in luck. Drive down the road a bit to Lee's Landing diner. Neat little place with good food and a real happy atmosphere.
