Lolo National Forest / Quartz Flat Campground, Superior, Montana

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $10.00
Overall Rating:

Surprising campground when you pull off at an Interstate rest area. Very spacious, site level. You can camp on either side of I by using the one lane tunnel under the highway. My suggestion, camp on the north side of highway, further away from railroad. Nice trail on northern side goes down near river. Roadways are great for walking dogs. I'm tagging this campground for an overnight when we head out west again next summer. We camped at Lolo National Forest / Quartz Flat Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Butte KOA, Butte, Montana

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $47.00
Overall Rating:

Put into a site where we had to park in road and share a 20 amp pedestal with another camper. No sewer. Lots of mosquitoes and other bugs. If you stay here, bring the bug spray. Noisy from being very near Interstate. We camped at Butte KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Take a ranger guided pontoon trip. View of wildlife including birds and alligators. There is a swimming area across the lake. Trails are easy walk, best time to view Gopher Turtles is early morning. Also large growth of Lone Leaf Pine, which is getting rare due to overharvesting. About 40 miles, visit Georgia Museum of Agriculture in Tifton.

Homolovi Ruins State Park, Winslow, Arizona

Date of Stay: October, 2016 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

Excellent state park. Water ,30 and 50 amp electrical with some sites with sewer. Located north of Winslow, the park is the site of an old Hopi ancestral settlement. Visitor Center has several exhibits and the staff is outstanding at providing information for guests. Also ranger guided tours to pictographs and the old pueblo sites. About 20 minutes north is what is called the Little Painted Desert. Make a trip up to Hopi and go to Second Mesa. The Visitor Center/Restaurant offers an excellent Blue Taco, a local specialty. Park is dog friendly and camp hosts friendly. Star gazing is outstanding. We make it a regular stop as we travel on I-40 in Arizona. We camped at Homolovi Ruins State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Visit Second Mesa at Hopi 1 hour north, Hopi artisans in their shops. Less than 90 minutes from Petrified Forest National Park, Sunset Crater National Monument, Waputki National Monument. Short drive to Meteor Crater. Visit the last Fred Harvey Hotel still functioning; La Posada Hotel in Winslow. Excellent restaurant, gift shop and art exhibits. While in Winslow, take it easy while you stand on that corner in Winslow, Arizona made famous in the Eagle's song "Take it Easy".
