Forest Hills RV & Golf Resort, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $1.00
Overall Rating:

A membership resort focused around its golf course that has mostly seasonal stationed trailers and model homes but also has several RV sites available to rent on a nightly, weekly, etc basis. Very friendly staff but a bit of an unusual feel to it as it caters to its regular clientele. By that I mean they don't have the usual signage letting you know how to get around not do they give you a map of the resort when you "check-in". Not the usual paperwork upon arrival either, although they did escort us to our site and were willing to answer any questions....very helpful staff! If you golf this is the place as the course is fun and in great shape. If you like water sports there are plenty of lakes around here for that too. Wi-fi was non existent but both AT&T and Verizon worked very well. Sites are huge but wide open at this time; there are many recently planted trees that will be a nice improvement. Very good bar and grill as part of the resort and there was live music our first night; not sure how often they have live entertainment but I did see other scheduled activities on bulletin boards. We camped at Forest Hills RV & Golf Resort in a Motorhome.

Jamestown Campground, Jamestown, North Dakota

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $36.00
Overall Rating:

Unplanned overnight stop on our route to Minnesota due to a storm with high winds coming in that we chose to avoid driving through. The most level sites we've ever seen that were not cement pads (and even more level than some of them we've experienced). Plenty of space between sites although there weren't many fire pits or grills. I do believe there was a picnic table at each site. Large area to walk your dog but no dog park. The best wi-fi at any campground we've used. Also, both AT&T and Verizon worked exceptionally well. Right next to the highway for those that have sensitive hearing and also there is a 3/4 mile or so road that isn't paved leading to the campground. Their road wasn't a problem but you do have to go slow. We camped at Jamestown Campground in a Motorhome.

Cottonwood Campground (NPS Campground), Medora, North Dakota

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $14.00
Overall Rating:

Boondocking sites. No hookups. Large enough for a 40' Motorhome but strangely shaped (think crescent moon) so a bit of a challenge to get in and may not be large enough to use accessories like awning, etc. Otherwise there was plenty of room to find space for camp chairs and your grill. Quiet campground and the animals walking through were a huge plus factor. We camped at Cottonwood Campground (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.

Gateway FamCamp (Military FamCamp), Malmstrom AFB, Montana

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

Was going to stay two nights....left after one. Meets minimum standards but that's about all I can say for this FamCamp. Not pleasant appearance and zero amenities. Host told us where to park but wasn't at all friendly nor helpful. Not suppose to take reservations but I saw at least three spots with reserved signs....one I guess was for someone's pickup because that's all I saw park there. Doubt I'd even stop there again for an overnight if I was in the area. We camped at Gateway FamCamp (Military FamCamp) in a Motorhome.

Mountain Meadow RV Park and Cabins, Hungry Horse, Montana

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

One of my favorite campgrounds to date! Beautiful wooded campground just off the main highway to Glacier Nat'l Park from the west. Each site surrounded by trees (this means no satellite but I didn't go to Glacier to watch TV) and therefore very private and shady/restful. Sites (we were at two different ones) were both pretty level so not sure why this was an issue for others. Sites had picnic table, fire pit, and a decent size area for chairs, etc. to enjoy family and friends company around the fire. Large open area set aside with a small fenced area for dogs. The whole area could be fenced and would make for a much better dog park with room for them to exercise and play. Friendly staff that will even show you where the huckleberries grow wild that you can pick. Price of incidentals like firewood and ice were the same at the park as you'd find in town -- huge plus IMO. We camped at Mountain Meadow RV Park and Cabins in a Motorhome.

RedRock RV Park, Island Park, Idaho

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $54.00
Overall Rating:

Out of the way and quiet were this campsite's strengths but remember that means you have to drive a bit (5 miles) just to get to the main road (cost of being "out of the way" I guess :) Excellent and helpful staff that led everyone to their spots and assisted getting them situated. Were also willing to provide same assistance on departure. Good laundry facilities and a small playground but the roads aren't paved so not great for kids trying to ride bicycles, skateboards, etc. Their wi-fi is WEAK but they tell you that upfront. AT&T not strong (they also tell you that) but there is a good signal when you get to the main road and "up the hill" a little ways. According to those familiar with the area Verizon lost a couple towers this past winter and haven't gotten them replaced as yet so we basically had little to no internet access during our two week stay. However, can't fault the campground for tower loss and my understanding is normally Verizon is very good in the area. Plenty of room to exercise and play with your dog (off leash outside the campground's boundary) but no designated dog park for pets to socialize and play. All-in-all we had an outstanding stay! We camped at RedRock RV Park in a Motorhome.

Conestoga Campground / Smith River Valley, White Sulphur Springs, Montana

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $4.00
Overall Rating:

Clean and quiet campground with friendly staff. Not a lot to do in the area but this was a 2-day stopover for us between Yellowstone and Glacier so we weren't looking for a lot to do. Level site and plenty of room for the toad. Good laundry facilities and a cute town with about anything you want or need. Butcher shop in the grocery story at the east end of town has awesome meats! Wi-fi service through Verizon was very good. Ice cream social on Wednesdays and Saturdays around 7:00 run by the owner...great place to get ideas of what's in the area and where you might like to go. Only negatives are there aren't enough trees, no fire rings, and there wasn't a great place for dogs to run/exercise. Staff there was "dog friendly" enough and there was plenty of room to walk with your dog outside the campground. We camped at Conestoga Campground / Smith River Valley in a Motorhome.

7th Ranch RV Camp, Garryowen, Montana

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Interesting campground layout with the tiered effect. Being in a spot at the top of the hill would be great and at the bottom like we were...not sure how it would be if your site is in the middle but I think it works for them. Relatively level site and they have someone lead everyone to their spot. Their wi-fi wasn't strong but we had no problem with our Verizon jetpack. Although no dog park, we were told the dog could be "off-leash" anywhere around the outside boundary of the park. Very small laundry facilities (two small stackable washer/dryer combos) that cost too much IMO. Small playground area and I saw a couple of horseshoe pits but all-in-all there isn't a whole lot at this campground for kids. Quiet serenity with awesome vistas is what this place offers in abundance! Very good stopover for visiting Little Big Horn. No fires allowed :( We camped at 7th Ranch RV Camp in a Motorhome.

Devils Tower View RV Park, Devils Tower, Wyoming

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $43.00
Overall Rating:

As others have mentioned this campsite has only a few spaces and includes only electricity however its not in a location I think too many people will want to stay at for long periods of time. Location for and view of the Devil's Tower is excellent and although parking area is barren it does meet minimum requirements. No real negative but the owners weren't overly friendly/helpful and I'd have personally paid the extra few bucks and stayed at another campground right outside the tower's entrance if it had been available. We camped at Devils Tower View RV Park in a Motorhome.

Rushmore Shadows RV Resort, Rapid City, South Dakota

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $1.00
Overall Rating:

Outstanding campground very near to most sites you'd want to visit in the area. Multiple and well maintained play areas for kids, including pool and mini golf. Very family friendly. Probably the friendliest staff overall I've experienced in our travels. Excellent wifi even when the park was almost full. No negatives at all! Tips for other Campers:

Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park, Needles Hwy, Iron Mountain Rd., Sturgis, Deadwood, Leads, wood carver's place in Keystone, Hill City and of course Badlands Nat'l Park were just a few of the places we visited and enjoyed. Take a picnic lunch with you when you head out for the day; there seemed to always be somewhere to stop and enjoy yourself.

Cottonwoods RV Park, Columbia, Missouri

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed two weeks, thus the daily rate listed is from their weekly rate. Out of the way enough not to hear road noise but close enough to anything you need. Sites are somewhat close together and the park has a definite "downhill" side, which when it rains (and it did often on us the first week) you'll probably find water around your unit. But they do what they can as fast as they can to try to make it as less an inconvenience as possible.

No designated dog park but they allow your pet to go just about anywhere on a leash. Plenty of places to walk with your dog so that's not an issue. There are a couple of really nice dog parks in Columbia if you need some "off leash" time.

Everyone friendly and helpful. Wifi better than at many parks I've been to, but as usual will bog down during evening hours. AT&T worked really well; Verizon was good to mediocre. Decent playground for small kids and the pool was nice, clean and inviting. Like that they had a few activities scheduled: Movie on the Lawn, a BBQ and donuts one morning while we were there. Definite stop if you need a place in mid Missouri. We camped at Cottonwoods RV Park in a Motorhome.

Grocery store not 2 miles away. Go a little further and there's not much you can't find. Great dog parks in the city: a couple even have water features if your K9 pal likes to swim. Devil's Icebox is a nice place to hike and spend the day.

Scott AFB FamCamp (Military FamCamp), Scott AFB, Illinois

Date of Stay: October, 2016 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

Quiet and although near the runway there is very little traffic normally so that wasn't an issue. However, is on the opposite side of the runways to base support activities causing you to have to drive some to take advantage, however it isn't that far milage wise. Two distinct parking areas make up the campground. One will have you surrounded by trees while the newer(?) are is wide open...each can be an advantage or disadvantage depending on your needs. Only complaint is the lack of sewer available at each site. We camped at Scott AFB FamCamp (Military FamCamp) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Base lake colocated with FamCamp where many fish and is pretty to walk around with the dog. Also, not far from the base golf course which has a snack bar; albeit the hours might be a little strange to some. Also nearby is a deli sandwich shop (McAlister's) but it's house in a large commercial building so you have to know of it...not well advertised.
