Trailer Village (Concessionnaire Operated), Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Original site so steep that leveling was impossible; we had to ask for a different site, which was done. No convenient place for dumping trash, which was particularly inconvenient for those of us who clean up after our dogs. None of: fenced dog area, pool (although we saw people in bathing suits?), snack bar, playground, WiFi. No A T & T signal. Also no store, but the market is only one shuttle bus stop away. All sites are 50 amp; the registration desk has converters for units needing 30 amp, but we couldn't tell if there was ever an issue of their running out of those. (Bring one's own?) Staff person at the desk talked about charging us a half-day for leaving late but then did not do so. One can walk to the rim or use the very convenient shuttle. Despite its minimal provisions it really is the best way to visit the Grand Canyon. We camped at Trailer Village (Concessionnaire Operated) in a Motorhome.

Camp Washington Ranch, Whites City, New Mexico

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

The RV sites at Washington Ranch are obviously an afterthought. There's a gravel patch across the road from the Ranch property, and someone put up three power poles and water faucets and announced that the Ranch was thereby also an RV park. There is a dump station at the end of the gravel patch, but, despite what we were told, even parking our RV at the power and water site closest to the dump station, we couldn't make our sewer line, even with extending hoses, reach it and still be on roughly level ground. There is no dog park, although the landscaped grounds of the Ranch property offer plenty of space to walk a dog on leash. The closest dumpster for trash is far from the gravel patch for the RVs. The office is rarely staffed. There is no WiFi at the RV sites. Carlsbad Caverns are amazing and well worth the visit, but surely there is a better option than this for the RV traveler. We camped at Camp Washington Ranch in a Motorhome.

Bar J Hitchin Post RV, Sweetwater, Texas

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

Pleasant place for a one night stay. Only dumpster was fairly far from our site. No fenced dog park that I could find. The staff were extremely pleasant and flexible. Arriving after the office was closed was no problem. Fairly pleasant landscaping, but I suspect the sites get hot in the afternoon, since there is little true shade. We camped at Bar J Hitchin Post RV in a Motorhome.

Rainbow Ranch, Groesbeck, Texas

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

No other guests. No sewer at the site. No drive-thrus available. Reasonably pleasant grounds. Not a "ranch" at all and certainly not a "working ranch" as advertised at one time. We cut a three night visit short and stayed only one night. We camped at Rainbow Ranch in a Motorhome.

Twelve Oaks RV Park, Lake Charles, Louisiana

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

Very pleasant staff. Grass and weeds need to be cleared away from the access pipe to sewage. Dog park is quite large, grassy and pleasant, with performance ramps, etc for the more ambitious. WiFi is available but very slow and connection is often lost. Staff person was very friendly, pleasant and helpful. Dumpter lid needs to be kep closed, since otherwise trash and garbage are floating in rainwater. We camped at Twelve Oaks RV Park in a Motorhome.

Holbrook / Petrified Forest KOA, Holbrook, Arizona

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Typical KOA campground, which for us is very positive. The site was quite satisfactory. The location is satisfactory for visiting the Petrified Forest National Park, which includes the Painted Desert and is stunning. One drives 20+ miles to one of the park's two entrances, visits the park by driving its length, roughly 20 miles with many wonderful stops, and then one exits at the other end of the park and returns 20+ miles to the KOA camp, completing the triangle. We camped at Holbrook / Petrified Forest KOA in a Motorhome.

Red Canyon RV Park and Campground, Panguitch, Utah

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Site somewhat hard to level. Tree blocked full deployment of slide out, which is on driver's side. Laundry has one washer and one dryer, but the room was clean and the machines worked. WiFi was not promised to be good, but at our site it was very good. The camp is conveniently close to Bryce Canyon and has good views of the mountains in the distance. Overall the camp is an adequate but minimal option. We camped at Red Canyon RV Park and Campground in a Motorhome.

Mount Carmel Motel and RV, Mount Carmel, Utah

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

Original site had a tree that would have made deploying our canopy impossible. However, another site was offered which worked out fine. Sites seem very level. Most sites are pleasantly shaded. Staff person (owner?) was very pleasant. Atmosphere is very dog friendly, although there's no fenced dog run. WiFi is spotty; it seems fairly good in the mornings and slow or non-existent in the evenings. We camped at Mount Carmel Motel and RV in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

If visiting Zion National Park, one would do better to stay near the east entrance to the park. Entering the park from the west entrance, which one does from Mt Carmel, entails a long drive through the park's very impressive, mile long tunnel, followed by a descending road with multiple, sharp switchbacks, which together is somewhere between awkward and impossible for an RV.

Stovepipe Wells Village RV Park (Concessionaire Operated), Death Valley National Park, California

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

This appears to be a very fine resort but not for RV campers. The RV sites are across road from the main resort and are simply a line of parking spaces with hookups. There is no shade, no tables and no landscaping. The sites are very close together. Most of the staff are friendly, but they were fairly straightforward about the fact that the RV camping is often not tolerable. Our old AC couldn't keep up with the summer heat; it overheated and tripped the circuit breaker, so we had no AC. The water comes out of the tap so hot, it's too hot for showering, much less drinking, and this is true of the resort showers, too We cut our visit back to one night and escaped. The location is great for visiting the park, but one should rent a room there, not make it an RV visit. Hint: if the management has closed the tenting area and is allowing no tenting because of heat, then the RV sites should also be closed; they'll be too hot and exposed to be tolerated. We camped at Stovepipe Wells Village RV Park (Concessionaire Operated) in a Motorhome.

29 Palms Golf Resort, Twentynine Palms, California

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Transient sites are in a long row down an unshaded parking lot, with hookups at each parking space. Sites are fairly level. Very unaesthetic, although the front part of the park for longer term residents is quite pretty. Good indoor pool with adequately clean shower and changing rooms. The dog walk is very distant at the far back of the property and is simply a sandy patch. If no one is using the horse shoes and picnic area near the pool, that is a good, small dog exercise area. The site is conveniently near one of the entrances to Joshua Tree National Park. We camped at 29 Palms Golf Resort in a Motorhome.

Covered Wagon RV Park, Phoenix, Arizona

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

The RV camp is a small, family operated undertaking. All together it is quite satisfactory. Our site was not yet vacated by the previous occupant when we arrived around 5:00 p.m. The owner/manager seemed indecisive about what to do, but when I gently but clearly said that I expected her to have the site vacated for us, she went and spoke to the previous occupants, who pulled up stakes and left. The owner/manager then went out of her way to help us get set up, including finding a place for us to put our tow dolly and helping us (a little more than needed) in leveling. The site was close enough to level so that setting up was easy, and the utility connections were convenient. The WiFi was acceptable. Many of the sites seem to have long-term occupants. We camped at Covered Wagon RV Park in a Motorhome.

Tucson / Lazydays KOA, Tucson, Arizona

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

The sites under the solar panels are shady and delightful, well worth the extra fee. All other RV sites are out in the open in huge, parking lot like expanses. The people are quite pleasant. Trash pickup is done conveniently from in front of the site. Recycle bins are provided so one can segregate and put out separately one's recyclables. There are two tiny dog parks but one huge grassy dog park, where even the most athletic and large dog could run and play fetch happily. WiFi is contracted out to a third party provider, and the original connecting is difficult. The instructions provided by the office are inadequate and incomplete. And one must use a different code and a different e-mail address for every device with which one wants to access the Internet. Very awkward. However, once the connection was set up, the reliability and speed was some of the best of what I've experienced at RV camps. There was a very loud party a few sites down from us well after 10:00 p.m. quiet time. I went and spoke to them, and they quieted down some. When I walked the dog at midnight, I mentioned to the gate guard that the party was still going on. I was told the guard would pursue it, but as far as I could tell that did not happen. One should be aware that the whole park is huge. We camped at Tucson / Lazydays KOA in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The Saguaro Museum, near the western part of the Saguaro National Park, is well worth a visit, and one can easily spend a day there. The National Park itself is also worth visiting.

Las Cruces KOA, Las Cruces, New Mexico

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Pull through sites are unshaded and parking lot like. The office is not staffed during announced hours, and telephone messages are not responded to. (See more below.) There is a dog walk area on the map, but it is far distant from all the RV sites. The grounds are very pet unfriendly. Each site has parallel concrete slabs that are fairly level. WiFi is provided by a 3rd party with whom the RV camp contracts out, and as usual this is awkward, but we were able to connect and the connection was mostly satisfactory, with the signal only occasionally getting dropped. On our departure date we called the office at 10:25 asking for flexibility in departure time. The office was closed, and the message was ignored. Since the whole camp was almost empty, our message said that we assumed there was no problem, but to call us if there was a problem. We heard nothing, so we assumed the delay was approved. At 11:25 we were telephoned and told that there would be an additional charge as of 11:30. No one had listened to our earlier message. I suspect the 11:25 call was from someone off-site. We have now seen that additional charge on our credit card bill, and we will be disputing it. We camped at Las Cruces KOA in a Motorhome.

Town & Country RV and Mobile Home Park, Roswell, New Mexico

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

Very pleasant and helpful staff person. The site had all the promised utilities, had some shade, and was fairly level. A bin for trash was reasonably close. A tiny dog walk was very close. Further away, beyond the pool and clubhouse, was a very large, grassy and pleasant dog walk area with the extra plus of motion sensor lights so that walking one's dog and cleaning up after it were easy even at night. Restrooms and laundry room were clean and adequate. We camped at Town & Country RV and Mobile Home Park in a Motorhome.

Amarillo KOA, Amarillo, Texas

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $42.00
Overall Rating:

Typical KOA campground, which for us means positive. We were only there for one night, passing through. The place is very hard to contact by telephone. Several times on different days, as we were planning our trip, we tried to call but would get a busy signal with no voice-mail option. We had a plumbing problem the day we were at the camp, and the staff was not as helpful as one would have hoped in helping to locate a plumber with RV experience and able to help on short notice. We camped at Amarillo KOA in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The nearby restaurant "Big Texan" offers a free shuttle from the KOA camp, which the KOA staff help to coordinate. The restaurant is large and is a tourist attraction in its own right. We enjoyed our meal there, which was moderately priced considering the circumstances.
