Kansas City West / Lawrence KOA , Lawrence, Kansas

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $44.00
Overall Rating:

The sites are not difficult to get into and mine was level but they are dirt. Full hookups but this place is really looking down-at-heels. Sites are very close to one another... hope you like to hear the guy next door snore. Hookups all work but are oddly situated as are the picnic tables.... gotta share space with the other guy next door. The one dumpster was overflowing. Grass seed is strewn on top of dry dirt... not likely to grow but will make good mud at the next rain. This is in a populated area so cell service is good. Pet friendly and a decent dog area. WiFi is not good... just an unprotected hot spot. This is yet another one of the many campgrounds that advertise that they have WiFi but, for all practical purposes, they don't. It is possible to connect after several tries but it won't hold. We attempted connection on three different devices with the same result. (No, we don't try to stream.) This looked like a park that was perhaps recently acquired and trying to get up to KOA standards or it's a KOA on its way down. We camped at Kansas City West / Lawrence KOA in a Motorhome.

Wellington KOA, Wellington, Kansas

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

Very nice little KOA. Level sites, gravel, but not the messy kind. Easy to get in and out. Full hookups, including cable. WiFi works! Cell phone reception good. Friendly. Propane available, but you have to get it coming in, or else go back out onto the highway and find a place to turn around and come in again. Pet friendly. Cabins here look very nice. We camped at Wellington KOA in a Motorhome.

WinStar RV Park, Thackerville, Oklahoma

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Very nice park.... roomy and clean with concrete pads and grass areas. Laundry probably one of the best I have used, and very reasonable. I didn't use the restrooms or showers, but if the laundry is any indication, I would expect them to be clean. Shuttle service to the casino to gamble, gawk, or eat. Everyone was very friendly. Easy in, easy out. My only complaint was the WiFi.... as in many campgrounds, mostly in name only. I used my hot spot. (Very good in laundry room, but many warnings of unsafe configuration on all three of my devices... ) Antenna TV, but good reception. I was hoping for propane, but didn't see any there. Pet friendly, with a paved dog walk around the perimeter. We camped at WinStar RV Park in a Motorhome.

This huge development is all by itself, no town of any size nearby. They even have a residential complex for the many employees of the casino. Buy your groceries before you arrive... and have fun at the casino.

Country Oasis RV Park, Florence, Texas

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

This campground is now functional, but is still new, a work in progress. The sites are all long, and even though they are gravel/rock, mine was perfectly level. Sites are ample for the RV, but too narrow to walk around in easily... they said they intended to work on that. I am not sure how many spaces the park has... I estimated for now. I saw only one drive thru site. No shower or laundry yet, but we were told that will come soon. Pet friendly, even in the office. Little shade... the trees are still young. Full hookups, WiFi that worked well (in my spot at least.. it is Tengo, which we all know can vary). There is cable, but the selections did not include Public TV --- however, being close to Austin, the antenna stations come in very well. Cell service is good in the area. The address is Florence, but for all practical purposes you are in Georgetown. We camped at Country Oasis RV Park in a Motorhome.

Pioneer Beach Resort, Port Aransas, Texas

Date of Stay: March, 2018 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

As with all of these 'resorts,' the spaces are too close together for comfort, but not as bad as many. Most of the sites are grassy, pads are concrete, staff is friendly and helpful. Avoid most pull-thru sites unless you are just passing thru. Much too close together with small gravel that gets tracked in everywhere. It is a large but easily negotiated campground. Paved streets. Golf cart rules are confusing, as the rules say 'no rental golf carts of any size are allowed' but we had a rental cart as it seems most people do. There is a sticker you need to buy for $30 or $35 that is good for a year. The office has to know about your cart and you get the sticker from them. I heard that if your rental cart is one of those that has advertising or a 'rent me' indication, they are not welcome. You may ride your cart across the boardwalk to the beach and into town. They don't have one of these 'no units over 10 years old' rules, but do stipulate that it must be in good mechanical condition and look nice. Most people here seem to be reasonably long term and there are a very few sites that may be permanently occupied. We would stay here again. Unless you are just staying for a night, your electricity is billed separately. Propane is available. Cable is available. Lots of people wash their cars and rigs at the sites... seems not to be an issue. Very pet friendly. Wi-Fi in the park was quite iffy... sometimes good for quite a spell, then slow as molasses. It seems to depend on which way the wind is blowing. Go to the rec room or laundry for a good connection, but don't count on it in the yard, where it seems more like the old modem connections from years ago. We didn't think the rates were bad: http://www.pioneerrvresorts.com/rates-2/ If you stay more months, you may find a better deal. We stayed for a month at $625 plus cable plus electricity. It is a Good Sam park. We camped at Pioneer Beach Resort in a Motorhome.

River Walk RV Park, San Antonio, Texas

Date of Stay: February, 2018 - $43.00
Overall Rating:

When we arrived, despite having made reservations far in advance, we were shown our site. It was probably OK if you had a tent in the back of a van, but we never would have fit. However, the staff here did find us another spot. When we arrived, I was told the WiFi would be iffy, but it was fairly good. They later 'upgraded' their WiFi and for a brief shining moment it was really good, but soon became marginal. Perhaps they will be working on this. If you stay a while, you can arrange for cable TV. Antenna reception is tricky... I look for the three networks plus PBS and could never get more than three of the four. This RV park has acquired the park adjoining. There still isn't a road that joins the two, so this makes very difficult maneuvering for a rig of any size and you have to walk through someone's site to get to the office or laundry. Also, they are in the process of dividing many of the Happy Trails sites into two sites, which makes VERY close quarters - and necessitates sharing of sewer and power, which doesn't work out very well. There are a few fairly nice sites in the River View portion. There is some kind of truck facility right next door and they shift the semi trailers around at night. This does not bother us, as we are used to staying in Walmart parking lots and truck stops, but could be a real turn-off for many. My site was on grass/soil, but the sites next to me and across from me have metallic debris in the stone/gravel pads. It looks like they used crushed concrete from some construction project instead of good gravel. They are aware of the issue, so perhaps that will be rectified. The laundry is not big enough for the number of campsites it is meant to serve, but it is clean and everything works. On the plus side, this is a very pet tolerant place and the people are unfailingly friendly and as helpful as they can be... considering what they have to work. We camped at River Walk RV Park in a Motorhome.

Junction/North Llano River RV Park, Junction, Texas

Date of Stay: February, 2018 - $37.00
Overall Rating:

We felt fortunate to find this campground. Reservations were easy to make, the welcome was friendly, full hookups, sites are comfortably large and easy to get into, there is cable and the WiFi works well, at least at my site 44. Laundry was clean and all machines operational. Cell phone service was good. Very pet friendly. This is a Good Sam park that looks like it used to be a KOA. It's right by the river and I suspect that later in the year, when things green up, it will be very attractive. We camped at Junction/North Llano River RV Park in a Motorhome.

Road Runner RV Park (formerly Parkview Mobile Home & RV Park), Fort Stockton, Texas

Date of Stay: February, 2018 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

We stopped here because we just needed a place to be for the night, out here off I10 in West Texas as evening closed in. Management was friendly and guided us to our sites, but the park leaves something to be desired. We had full hookups and that all worked, WiFi was more imaginary than anything else, there is really nothing available on TV in the area (no fault of the park). Cell phone reception was good, pets are welcome. But the place is disheveled and crowded. It seems a mainly long term workers' camp, with a few stray travelers stopping in. We camped at Road Runner RV Park (formerly Parkview Mobile Home & RV Park) in a Motorhome.

Mission View RV Park (55+ park), Tucson, Arizona

Date of Stay: January, 2018 - $39.00
Overall Rating:

This is really for long term people, but if you just need a day or so, there is a good chance they will have a spot for you. Very friendly and very pet friendly. Perhaps a little convoluted to get to, but not difficult. Follow your GPS. Paved roads, gravel sites with patio. Back in sites, but someone will guide you, full hookups, decent laundry facilities... other amenities that we did not use. Some air traffic overhead, but not awful. Three basic networks plus PBS come in well. Wi-Fi is OK, but not totally dependable. I found cell service to vary in strength. We camped at Mission View RV Park (55+ park) in a Motorhome.

Holt's Shell RV Park, Gila Bend, Arizona

Date of Stay: January, 2018 - $12.00
Overall Rating:

This is a small, first come/first served RV park tucked behind the Shell station. Despite the fact that it is a busy truck stop, no glamour, it is very quiet in the RV park.. We were just needing a place for the night and happened upon this. Full hookups and everything works. On gravel, not just desert dirt. Propane available. Laundry is good. There is free WiFi, but it's iffy out here in the RV area. We could get no TV reception. Cell service is good. If you are just needing a dump station, they have a free one here. $23.99 a night, but with Passport America we paid $11.99. If you are looking for Mexican yard art and such, there is plenty of it in the gift shop. And, for those who like to get weighed once in a while, there are scales to see just how overloaded we can get an RV. GPS 32.93143, -112.67275 We camped at Holt's Shell RV Park in a Motorhome.

Saddle Mountain RV Park, Tonopah, Arizona

Date of Stay: January, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

We called ahead and were told reservations were not necessary, as they had many spaces. That was accurate and we had no problem getting in. There is not a lot around here, but it is a nice campground. Most sites are taken for longer stays, but there are many earmarked for the over-nighters. Pleasant check-in. Sites were level and easy to get into. Full hookup. Very nice laundry. Other amenities we didn't explore, such as the exercise room. There is a chicken or beef (both?) operation not within sight but nearby, and if the wind is right you do get some odor and some flies. If you have always been 'city folk,' this may be a little off-putting. There is free Wi-Fi in the library only and a third party Wi-Fi available at your site, but we did not use either. Cell service was just fine and supported my hot spot. For TV the three major networks plus PBS came in well. We camped at Saddle Mountain RV Park in a Motorhome.

Usery Mountain Regional Park, Mesa, Arizona

Date of Stay: January, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

This is our 4th visit here. The gravel spaces are large, almost like having no neighbors, and reasonably level. Water and electric, nice restrooms and showers. No full hookup sites. Antenna picks up many TV stations, including all three major networks. As in most parks, no WiFi, but good cell phone reception. Practically in the city of Mesa, so easy shopping. Lots of hiking opportunities. The Visitors Center is good, with the added benefit of having scheduled nature programs. Very popular, so think ahead and make reservations as soon as you know when you want to visit. We camped at Usery Mountain Regional Park in a Motorhome. Mesa / Apache Junction KOA, Apache Junction, Arizona

Date of Stay: January, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Apache Junction KOA... is a nice clean and orderly desert style KOA... Management seems curt, but not really unfriendly. What I look for in a campground are sites that I can get into and out of reasonably easily, full hookups, WiFi that works, reception of network TV (no cable needed), a location with cell phone reception, and at least pet-tolerant. This campground meets all of that except for the WiFi, which exists in name only. It is basically useless. Well, completely useless really, and they are aware of it. They were aware of it last year as well, and there has been no improvement. WiFi is not available at your coach, it is not usable in the club house, and it is barely usable at the office building. Other campers I spoke to experienced the same thing. I am not talking about being able to stream movies or keep up on Facebook... just the ability to keep in touch with family and friends. Not every campground can have WiFi, but if they present themselves as having that service, it should be available. Otherwise, say you don't have WiFi. Be honest. Someone choosing a KOA campground, instead of just any old campground along the way, is expecting an accurate description of the facility. It is for this reason that I would not return here and have given this rating. We camped at Mesa / Apache Junction KOA in a Motorhome.

Gilbert Ray Campground / Tucson Mountain Park, Tucson, Arizona

Date of Stay: January, 2018 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

This is a no frills desert campground almost in the city, good desert hiking, and within a very short drive to the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. It is well located and well managed, the gravel sites are nice and not too close to each other, sites are electric only but there are water supply points to fill your containers... Cell service is extremely iffy and of course there is no WiFi in these parks, so if you need to be in touch with the outside world you may or may not have an issue. I was able to pick up a few odd TV stations, but only one of the three major networks. We camped at Gilbert Ray Campground / Tucson Mountain Park in a Motorhome.

Fort Willcox RV Park, Willcox, Arizona

Date of Stay: January, 2018 - $23.00
Overall Rating:

I stayed here a few years ago, and would not have pulled in this year had I completely remembered that instance... but now (2018) this place has a new owner and things are different. Sites are roomy, the surface is now good clean gravel, level sites, there is now cable TV that works, and there is Wifi that is strong and dependable. The laundry has been improved and things just look better in general. Access is easy, off the Interstate, and the Willcox area is a good place for a base to go to Chiricahua if you don't want to camp out there. This is a Passport America park, which makes the already acceptable rate even better. We camped at Fort Willcox RV Park in a Motorhome.
