Meadowbrook Camping Area, Phippsburg, Maine

Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

This campground has the advantage to accept Passport America and to be located in one of the most beautiful peninsulas of Maine. The rate above reflects PA discount, which is not available July-August. Also, to get the discount you cannot make a reservation, must pay cash and accept to move every 3 days, or whenever someone else has a reservation on the site you're on. In one 2-week and one 1-week stays four times we were told that other campers had reserved the site, so they made us move. When I suggested that the campground was almost empty and they could move the reservation to a different site, they came up with all kinds of excuses. Needless to say we felt like second class citizens. Also, no one came on our previous sites, so we moved for nothing.

Besides that small frustration, it was wonderful to smell the ocean air all the time, to be in an amazing location for so little money, to have lobster available every evening for as little as $6.99 / lb, to have a great laundry room, decent bathrooms, decent wifi, very nice fellow campers and, overall helpful staff. The sites are mostly sandy, i.e. lots of dirt inside the motorhome and the roads to the campground quite narrow and winding, but not too bad. We camped at Meadowbrook Camping Area in a Motorhome.

Riverbend RV Resort, South Tamworth, New Hampshire

Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $31.00
Overall Rating:

This is a small campground run by the owners who live next door and helped out by some seasonals. Every one was very nice and helpful. It is an undiscovered jewel, as on Labor day weekend there were very few weekend campers. The campground seems to have two parts, the seasonals and the passers by. The former was full, in the latter, which includes a pool, we were the only ones. It was too cold for anyone to be at the pool so it was all very quiet. The campground was very well kept, clean and neat, with excellent wifi. The laundry room was on honor system, very good, and the showers and bathrooms very good, too. We camped at Riverbend RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Mile-Away Campground, Henniker, New Hampshire

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $27.00
Overall Rating:

This campground is a very good value for money with Passport America. The discount is accepted 5/7 days, so the weekly average is under $30. It is a very shaded campground, ideal for hot weather. There is a small beach, very peaceful in the evenings with some insect repellent. Most campers seemed to be seasonal, not even there during week days. Week days were nice. Weekend was crowded and loud. The spaces are separated by a lot of trees, but they are really close to each other, so if your neighbors are outside you hear all their conversations until they decide to go to sleep. A lot of dogs, too. It could have been the proximity, but it seemed like the customers of this campground were a different crowd: loud, inconsiderate, with undisciplined kids and dogs. Laundry room ok, showers cost money, had no hot water and water was barely dripping from the shower head. The staff was nice. We camped at Mile-Away Campground in a Motorhome.

Kampfires Campground, Inn and Entertainment, Dummerston, Vermont

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $29.00
Overall Rating:

This is a small park in a very convenient location off of I-91 and close to Brattleboro. We would recommend it for passers by. There is a nice farm-stand just north of the campground with fresh produce. Also close by all necessary shopping. There seem to be new owners who would like the business to be profitable and this is a little too obvious. They ask for $5 for unlimited wi-fi, in theory unlimited streaming. However they don't allow more than two devices on the free wi-fi, so to connect more than two one needs to pay the $5/day. Not good internet anyway. Also they ask for $5 for late departure, even for one hour. These are not large amounts but they indicate a certain attitude that is not very generous, so we didn't feel like staying a minute longer than necessary. In fact had it not been for PA discount (4 nights max) this wouldn't have been good value. The price above reflects an average of 3 nights PA and one night full price. Even though it is a small place we couldn't locate the facilities easily. The laundry room has a code, given upon arrival, but it wasn't indicated on the map so we didn't bother. There are sites under nice trees and sites in full sun. We didn't think to ask and we got the full sun, unfortunately. All sites seemed to be pull-throughs. We camped at Kampfires Campground, Inn and Entertainment in a Motorhome.

Lake Champagne Campground, Randolph Center, Vermont

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

They claim "3rd generation wi-fi" and it was really excellent. This campground is huge with different areas. A lot of "classic" sites, one next to the other, which seemed spacious enough. Section C was for those, like us, who enjoy privacy. Our site site was W/E but we could handle the absence of sewer for 5 days in exchange for privacy. The site was level, very private, no lights at night and the only reason we did not give a 10 was neighbors with noisy kids. We had the bad idea to leave our site from a back road. This would have been ok for a 4-wheel drive not an RV. Better stick to the mapped in-roads. The place is beautiful with a lot of walking possibilities. Bathrooms are clean and at the right places. The laundry room exists but the machines only wash with cold water, i.e. it's as if it doesn't exist. The owners and staff are very friendly and try their best to accommodate. They allow departure until 1 PM. They organize little gatherings, pot-luck, music etc. which are nice. Overall one of the best campground experiences for us. We camped at Lake Champagne Campground in a Motorhome.

Travelers Woods, Bernardston, Massachusetts

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

This is a nice campground conveniently located off of I-91. A bit too close, in fact. So close that the sound of the highway is constant. Otherwise we would have given them a 10. We were thankful for the access indications on their website, which avoided us a low bridge. We asked for a site with good internet only to find it broken down for the first three days of or stay. After that it was repaired and worked well. The campground's managers are camping there, too, and are available at all times and very helpful. The campground doesn'thave full hook- ups except by the highway, so we chose the W/E only option. No regrets, they have a bi-weekly sewer collection service at $4, very reasonable. The bathrooms and laundry are very nice, situated at the office's lower level. The office has a store and a lounge area. The whole campground is very well kept. Overall it is very good value. Grocery shopping is somewhat far but several small towns are around for restaurants. We camped for one week in a motorhome. We camped at Travelers Woods in a Motorhome.

Crazy Acres CG at Beaver Spring Lake (formerly Beaver Spring Lake CG), Davenport, New York

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

This campground has new owners who are trying to update it slowly. It is very spacious but with very little shade only on the borders of a very big field. Upon reservation we asked for good internet and were assigned a site, only to find the internet totally broken down. Three days later, after some repair it worked in a spotty way. The worst was electricity. Our surge protector was constantly cutting the power, as it was almost always less than 100V. It would not support even a fan in addition to the fridge. The weather was hot enough for AC but we toughed it out. The owners were sympathetic but will only deal with the problem after the end of the season. They seemed overwhelmed with all the necessary expenditures, to our view not able to prioritize. The showers could use revamping, the shower heads are so old that water squirts all over and the rooms have a really old dirty feel. Laundry room was ok. We stayed two weeks, the first on PA and the second on weekly rate that seemed way too expensive for what we were getting, but we had things to do there. Otherwise we would have left much earlier. It is unlikely that we go back. We camped in a motorhome. We camped at Crazy Acres CG at Beaver Spring Lake (formerly Beaver Spring Lake CG) in a Motorhome.

Shady Rest Campground, South Gibson, Pennsylvania

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

This campground is conveniently located off of I-81 and it is a jewel. Full of tall trees, it offers very shaded sites that give a sense of being alone in the woods and spaciousness, in spite of the fact that the sites are quite close to each other. Many seasonal fifth wheels there of workers in the fracking mines. They are very quiet, in fact the campground is very quiet all together. The owners are very nice and helpful. We asked and got excellent internet. No laundry facility and grocery shopping was somewhat far. Electricity is paid for separately if you go for the weekly rate. Make sure you read the meter and bring the reading to the office when you hook up. We stayed there for 10 days in a class A motorhome. We camped at Shady Rest Campground in a Motorhome.

River Camp USA, Piney Creek, North Carolina

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $23.00
Overall Rating:

This campground is located in a beautiful pristine area of NC, on the New River. It is a vacation place, not for passers-by. One needs to stay and decompress for a few days. The campground is grassy, shaded by tall trees, with sufficient space between sites. Occasional wildlife, such as deer jumping in the water, can be seen. It is overall very peaceful. The owner and staff are very helpful and accommodating. There is a store as well as the possibility to go for tubing or other river activities, with available equipment. We stayed in a class A motorhome for 3 weeks, left for one and came back for another 3 weeks. We appreciated that they gave us the site that we had and liked the first time. Even though it wasn't a shaded site, the climate is so mild that we had to cover at night. It was so nice we didn't want to leave ! PA rates for 5 days / week (the nightly rate above), long term. OK bathhouse, no laundry facility, reasonable wifi & verizon. We camped at River Camp USA in a Motorhome.

Vanderpool Campground, Vilas, North Carolina

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

This is a convenient small campground for Boone and the surrounding area. Many campers seemed to be permanent. We stayed for a week. The weekly price has risen but the owner hasn't updated the website. Our spot was shady, under a big tree, and the birds were singing all the time; it was beautiful. The concrete patio was nice to have. We were satisfied with the site, however the rest of the campground needs upgrading. The bathrooms, showers and laundry room were pretty bad: dirty, smelly, no light in the women's part and no window, the office was cluttered and very smelly and there was a smell of stagnant water in general. Besides that the owner was helpful in everything she could. The highlight: excellent wifi ! We camped at Vanderpool Campground in a Motorhome.

Pride RV Resort, Waynesville, North Carolina

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $22.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed at Pride RV resort for 3 weeks in a 30' motorhome. Passport America announces their discount as year-round, however they only accept it for 2 weeks. We had to pay the full price for the third week. We found that out when we went to renew our stay for the third week, too late to find a new campground to move to. Overall the campground is nice, albeit with a "mass-market" feel to it. The road nearby is quite noisy but very convenient to go places. Most parking spots have trees over them but not all, and it can get hot. Enough space between RVs so we didn't feel crammed. All services were good, even decent wifi - it would stop for a few seconds quite often but when it worked it was fast enough. Overall very clean, including showers, bathrooms, nice laundry room. The main downside that we found was a horrible smell every evening, which stayed for a couple of hours, possibly from nearby animal farms. Oh and they spray for insects, bad chemicals without notice. We camped at Pride RV Resort in a Motorhome.
