Steamboat Lake State Park, Clark, Colorado

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $27.00
Overall Rating:

This is a beautiful state run campground and we'll definitely be back. Note that there is little shade due to thinning of trees to thwart a pine beetle infestation. The sites are spacious, level, and well maintained. There are fresh water spiqots on each loop that you can use to fill your fresh water tank. Plenty of room for my TT and truck plus more space. There are electrical hook ups at some sites; no water or sewer hookups at the sites but there is a dump station at the campground. There are showers but we simply used the shower in our TT. There's a Marina where you can sign up for water ski lessons. The marina store is pretty sparse - suggest you arrive well stocked with food & beverages. Otherwise you're traveling to 8 miles to a small store in Clark (north of Steamboat) to try and find what you need. The fishing in Steamboat Lake is outstanding with large rainbow trout and some lake trout. The staff are friendly. There is cell service but no internet unless you use your smart phone as a hot spot. We arrived on August 19th and there had already been a freeze. We used our furnace each night. We camped at Steamboat Lake State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Steamboat Lake has world class trout fishing. Bring a canoe, small boat or belly boat to get out into the deeper water. I used a 5wt fly rod with larger size bead head prince, bead head copper johns and wolly buggers.

Lake Isabel - La Vista, Rye, Colorado

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $17.00
Overall Rating:

This is a nice campground and we'll be back again sometime in the fall. The grounds are green, lush, aspen and ponderosa pine trees abound. Fishing in the lake is pretty good - especially if you have a canoe or belly boat to get out into deeper water. There are electric hookups but no water or sewer. Be advised that even though the campground has water available the campground host will not let you hook up a fresh water hose to the spiqot. Fortunately I had a five gallon water container in my truck. I had to fill the container and carry it back to my TT numerous times and manually fill my fresh water tank . Not sure why but be prepared. Next time I'll water up before I arrive. Some sites are more level than others - bring leveling blocks. We camped at Lake Isabel - La Vista in a Travel Trailer.

Castle Lakes Campground Resort, Lake City, Colorado

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $49.00
Overall Rating:

Castle Lakes Campground is a nice spot about 7 miles west of Lake City, Colorado. Two good size trout lakes are on the property. Be advised it costs $7.00/day to fish on the lakes in addition to the campground fee. The staff are friendly, camping sites are level, spacious, plenty of shade trees and all have power and water hookups. Only some sites have sewer hookups, which is why I rated this a "7" instead of a "10". If you end up with a site without a sewer hook-up, check with the front desk and they'll offer you a site with sewer hook-ups if one is available, or, let you pull into one that is temporarily unoccupied so you can dump your tanks. We dumped prior to leaving after 4 days of camping. The sites are mostly back-in sites but some very large TT and fifth wheels had no problems getting in and out. The scenery is tremendous! The lakes are surrounded by snow capped peaks. The campground elevation is over 9,000 feet so be prepared with warm clothes. Lake City is very small with only two small grocery stores. Be advised to bring food and beverages with you. There is Internet at the campground office and cell service is spotty at best. This campground is fairly remote and a wonderful getaway for hiking, fishing, 4-wheeling, jeep rentals, etc. It's not a place to come to if you want all the conveniences of TV or nearby shopping. We stayed at site number 48 which was large and had the best views (but no sewer hook-ups). We camped at Castle Lakes Campground Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Craig KOA (formerly Craig Campground), Craig, Colorado

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $47.00
Overall Rating:

This is a nice campground with very gracious hosts. In addition to the small dog park, there was a nice path along the back of the campground to walk/run our dog. Picnic tables were clean. Full hook-ups worked well. The spaces are a bit close but even Memorial Day weekend the campground was only about half full. If the sites were more spacious I would have rated this campground a "10". Restrooms and showers were the cleanest I've seen. We camped at Craig KOA (formerly Craig Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

Rifle Gap State Park / Cottonwood Camp Ground, Rifle, Colorado

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed in the Cottonwood Loop and this is a wonderful Colorado State Park. It is clean and very well maintained. Note however that Cottonwood Loop only has 8 campsites. There are two other loops with more campsites. The Park does not take reservations. There is an additional $7.00 park use fee in addition to the $24 campsite fee. The loop is right on a lake and the trout were rising. The pads are level, gravel, and each site has a gazebo style covered picnic table with full hookups. There was plenty of room between sites and lots of grassy areas to walk our dog. We would definitely stay here again. We camped at Rifle Gap State Park / Cottonwood Camp Ground in a Travel Trailer.
