About Hidden Barb

Drive cross country twice yearly between our two homes. We are trying to slow the trip down and discover alternate routes. We prefer non-interstate highway travel and before our camper we sought out Mom and Pop motels. We are recently retired and travel with our husky rescue dog.

Harrison Bay State Park, Harrison, Tennessee

Date of Stay: November, 2017 - $22.00
Overall Rating:

Beautiful location on the main channel of Chicamauga Lake / Tennessee River. This review is for the campground only. Checked in on a Friday afternoon. As I waited for the clerk to finish her phone call I could tell she was clearly stressed. My check in went smoothly but not personable. The campground was laid out oddly. Some lots ample while others were crammed right up against others. The drives and patios were all paved and level. Good walking trails, playground, pool, etc. Reserve well in advance if you want a waterfront site. We camped at Harrison Bay State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Kentucky Dam State Park, Draffenville, Kentucky

Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

I imagine this would be a fun place for a family that is going to spend the day at the lake and then sit around in the evenings letting the kids run amok and get to know their VERY CLOSE in proximity neighbors. Fortunately when we were here this week, there were only 6 out of 200 sites occupied so we slept well. There were camp hosts but they never approached us.

It is laid out in a grid pattern with narrow roads and short parking pads making it difficult to back in even with our smaller trailer. The rest rooms were passable, the showers were not. Screen doors are warped so bugs and frogs were inside. Second Kentucky State park this year: they need to update. It was okay for an overnight but the gates were not locked and no security ever passed, making it unlikely we will stop again. We camped at Kentucky Dam State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Beacon RV Park, Saint Joseph, Missouri

Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

We were tired but after driving through Beacon RV Park, we went another 1.5 hours to find a campground that caters to travelers and tourists.

This place was filled with permanent residents. Crowded, cluttered sites and in an in-town neighborhood. Site surface is gravel and sand. Mostly shady lots. We camped at Beacon RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Wallace State Park, Cameron, Missouri

Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $19.00
Overall Rating:

Water and power at all RV/trailer sites. Many pull-throughs and most are level (ours was not because we were last in). Fire rings and picnic tables. Paved parking pad with plenty of grass and trees. Missouri State Parks know that the most important thing to campers is cleanliness and updating and they have proved that at this site. Hosts were friendly and helpful. Bathrooms were great. Sites were large enough for some privacy. This is worth going out of your way to stay at when traveling and it is a popular spot of K.C. area residents. I would advise reservations during popular seasons and weekends. We camped at Wallace State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Firewood and water available for purchase. Two dump stations and water fill up. Tent camping in a separate loop which was heavily wooded and looked "buggy". In addition to the bathhouse which was centrally located there were several toilet only facilities. I did not go in one and cannot attest to their cleanliness or even if they were flush.

Henrys Lake State Park, Island Park, Idaho

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $49.00
Overall Rating:

This campsite is an easy "commute" to the west entrance to Yellowstone and is also in a prime fly fishing area. The sites are on a slight hillside overlooking and adjacent to the lake. Every site has a lake view and mountain views are excellent also. The driveways are level and gravel as is the patio area. A small fire place is at each site. There are no shaded sites and the winds coming off the lake can get strong. We were near the older rest room building and it was clean. It seemed everyone there spent the day in Yellowstone and retired early to get ready for another day doing the same. The parking pads and drives could use a bit more gravel to keep down the dust. We camped at Henrys Lake State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

There is not convenient food shopping in the Henry's Fork area and restaurants are 10+ minutes away. Plan accordingly. Do not leave your awning up while away from the campsite. Winds come up suddenly from off the lake. At our particular restroom building the toilets were through one door and the showers through another and you have to come back outside to get to either. Another plan accordingly notice. Firewood available 24/7 through a giant vending machine.

Curt Gowdy State Park, Cheyenne, Wyoming

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

Located in a very scenic area halfway between Laramie and Cheyenne. We camped in the first loop where it seemed all lots are pull through and very spacious. The driveway was gravel and adjacent to a large patio with fire pit and concrete picnic table. Grass surrounded all. We were site #21 which was a little uneven but we adjusted. We appreciated the view and the privacy of our campsite. We would have preferred flush toilets and showers. We arrived just after 5 so there wasn't any direction, maps, or clues to what there was to do and where to go. The signs weren't a big help so I wish I had printed out a map of the park before our trip. We camped at Curt Gowdy State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

There was a little camp "store" which was just a trailer on a campsite. Campgrounds along I-80 in WY are sometimes sketchy because they allow full time residents so getting off the road to a state park appealed to us. Maybe added 30-45 minutes to our trip.

Dr. Edmund A. Babler Memorial State Park, Wildwood, Missouri

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $27.00
Overall Rating:

We were just there for an overnight stay and found it comfortable and clean. The restrooms are quite a distance from some of the sites and rather small for the number of guests. On the reservation map it showed how many feet we were from the restroom but that turned out to "as the crow flies", not walkable. Easy access to the dump station and the potable water to fill your tank. There was water at the road near our campsite but it was unclear whether it was potable. We camped at Dr. Edmund A. Babler Memorial State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

We drove this way to avoid pulling our camper through downtown St. Louis. It was easy access for our trip from the southern U.S. to the northwestern U.S. Traffic could have been a problem but we were there on a Sunday. We were aware that reservations are advisable and at the entry to the park there was a sign that suggested all sites were taken but when we got to the campground several of the sites were marked as available without reservations.

Washington City Park, Washington, Kansas

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

It is a value and we may stay there again as we make the trip across Rt. 36 4 times yearly. There are 20 somewhat shaded spaces. We stayed on a Monday so only 3 others units were there. Several sites are pull through. Electricity is at every site. The restroom facilities are elsewhere in this large city park, adjacent to the pool. It would have been a long walk and no way would you want to go in a public, unlocked bathroom in the dark. So I would only recommend this campground to self-contained units. Payment is by the honor system as is using the dump station. The picnic table was in poor, warped and rough condition. We camped at Washington City Park in a Travel Trailer.

Though it is a city park it would be too far for most to walk to shopping. This is just an overnight spot and most would not unhitch their vehicle so do your shopping prior to setting up.

Renfro Valley KOA, Mount Vernon, Kentucky

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

Easy exit from I-75. There seemed to be some long term campers here, but NOT permanent residents. We arrived late but our paper work was waiting for us. Though we didn't use it there was a covered outdoor kitchen with sinks and stoves. What a great idea. The campground is on the side of the hill and many of the sites are not level. We camped at Renfro Valley KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Renfro Valley is a popular bluegrass/country music venue. Campgrounds in the area will be full during the performance times. We would stay here again during off seasons but never when the campground might be fuller as the sites are too close together for our comfort.

Levi Jackson State Park, London, Kentucky

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $22.00
Overall Rating:

We were just here for an overnight. The sites were level and we had a pull through that was long enough for our vehicle and camper. The site was sandy without much gravel or pavement so we tracked in a lot of dirt, ugh. The restroom was satisfactory, just old and in need of an update and paint. We camped at Levi Jackson State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Addison Oaks County Park, Leonard, Michigan

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

Weather was miserable but the campground cleanliness and layout made up for it. Beautiful park with scenic views and easy walk ability. However, even with the cold rain the mosquitoes were evident and I can only imagine due to low, shady and swampy spots within the park that it can get quite "buggy". Yurts and cabins for rent also. Yurts were in the low swampy spot but the cabins were placed adjacent to the lake and had a great sunset view. We camped at Addison Oaks County Park in a Travel Trailer.

Just an hour away from the city. This would be a restful stopover for travelers who want to bypass Chattanooga by going up one side of Lookout Mtn and down the other thus missing that ugly I-75, I-24 intersection. Or it would be a great place to stay while visiting Chattanooga. Hiking trails abound as does the scenery (I can't wait to go back in the fall). The restrooms in the campground are older but clean and they could be quite a walk from many of the campsites. We stayed in the West Brow Loop which is away from the day use facilities. There are cabins and yurts for rent also. Our site was gravel, level and spacious. We had just the privacy we like. We camped at Cloudland Canyon State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Some restaurants and convenience stores at this end of the mountain. I'd be prepared ahead of time. 8 - 10 degrees cooler on the mountain. Dumping station available.
