Archway RV Park (formerly Quality Times RV Park), Mount Vernon, Illinois

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

This is a very flat, grassy, side by side type of RV park. The sites appear to be far enough apart for pullouts. The sites are very level, we were able to get DishTV in our site, but it could be a problem in some sites. Nothing special, but a good, quiet place to rest. Bring your own grill. The office is extremely nice, log cabin motif. There are three washers and three dryers. There is a dog run where you can let your dog off leash, but it is quite small. Walmart just a few of blocks away. We camped at Archway RV Park (formerly Quality Times RV Park) in a Motorhome.

Ozark Trails RV Park and Campground, Linn Creek, Missouri

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $22.00
Overall Rating:

This is a clean, friendly RV park that has lots of beautiful trees and a great nightly rate. Unfortunately, it also has lots of wood ticks and chiggers. Do not allow yourself or your dog to touch any vegetation, or you will be picking off wood ticks and suffering from chigger bites. We camped at Ozark Trails RV Park and Campground in a Motorhome.

Peculiar Park Place RV Park, Peculiar, Missouri

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $33.00
Overall Rating:

This is a great RV park especially if you have dogs. The sites are gravel and ours was very level. Great for DishTV reception. The owners are friendly. It is an older RV park, but they have kept it up well. It is very clean. The sites have stone patios and concrete round tables. It is about 1/2 mile from the interstate, just far away enough to make the highway noise very faint. Bring your own grill. There is no enclosed dog park, but if you own dogs, here's the key. In the far corner of the RV park, closer to the interstate, there is a large fallow field the park owns. If you can trust your dogs not to run away, you can let them off leash there. There are benches alongside the field. My dogs had a blast chasing each other. If you don't want to let them off leash in the open, the jeep trail alongside the field makes a great place to walk dogs. It is also a great place to ride bikes. We camped at Peculiar Park Place RV Park in a Motorhome.

Chapman Creek RV Park, Chapman, Kansas

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $36.00
Overall Rating:

This park is OK for an overnight stay. It is a typical gravel lot with small patches of sod and a small tree between each site. Underground sprinklers keep the sod in great shape. It is fine for DishTV reception. Cell phone reception was good, and the WiFi was kind of slow. It is very clean and the owners are friendly and helpful. I didn't really like it because even though it is dog friendly, it is not a great place for dogs. The gravel here is sharper and more uncomfortable for dogs to walk on, and there is really no place to walk your dogs except the sharp gravel roads. They do have a small dog park, but it is on a very steep slope and it's too small to play catch. My dogs ended up spending too much time in the RV and not enough time outside. If you don't have dogs, this would be good RV park. If you like to walk your dogs, I would look for another park. We camped at Chapman Creek RV Park in a Motorhome.

High Plains Camping, Oakley, Kansas

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

I would classify this as a hidden gem. Not many campers seem to stay here. If you stay here, ask to stay in the grassy back lot. When one first drives up to the office, the initial impression is not good, but the grassy back lot is very nice. It is a grass field with 3 gravel roads; 16 campsites, ringed with a line of pine trees. The sites are widely spaced, and it was mostly empty the two days we stayed. There are no overhead trees--Dish-TV works fine. If you are a birdwatcher like my wife, you will enjoy the many species of birds flying and hopping around the campsites. The park rules say dogs need to be on a leash, but there is a large, mowed lot (about an acre) on the backside of the property where one can play catch with the dogs without disturbing anyone. There are two dog parks, but due to the large mowed back lot, they are not that important. Due to few campers being around, there were several times I could let my dogs go chase the numerous, very large rabbits in the area. (Possibly jackrabbits.) (My dogs are good enough that they stop chasing rabbits when they run through the tree line.) If you stay here, it is likely you will see several rabbits. We camped at High Plains Camping in a Motorhome.

Limon KOA, Limon, Colorado

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $42.00
Overall Rating:

This is a so-so KOA that is a good place to get some sleep as you go somewhere else. To give them some credit, we arrived at 7:00 pm with no reservation and they had a back in site available. My main complaint is they charged me $42 for a site worth $25. The site marker posts were not installed deep enough and several are laying on the ground. Keep this in mind if looking for your site. If you make a reservation for a pull through, you would probably do better. They were in the middle of paving the roads and sites when we stayed so there were piles of asphalt or dirt here and there. It is quite windy here and a burn ban was in effect. The dog park was big enough to play fetch. When approaching the dog park, look left and right to ensure no one is pitching horseshoes. On this note, my Dad is the only person I've ever seen pitching horseshoes while camping. They did have a pool that looked clean. I would probably look for somewhere else if in the area again. We camped at Limon KOA in a Motorhome.

Blue Mesa Escape, Gunnison, Colorado

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $50.00
Overall Rating:

The main draw of this RV park is the view. All of the RV sites have a magnificent, absolutely gorgeous view of the Blue Mesa Reservoir in the middle of the Curecanti National Recreation Area. (see photo) I would recommend this campground on that alone. There is a marina about a mile away where one can rent pontoon boats. It is a very small campground that is mostly gravel. There is not much room to walk dogs, just around the gravel loop road. If they run through the grass and sagebrush like our dogs did, they can get ticks. There is only one washer and one dryer, and the cell phone reception is terrible. There was a fire-ban in force when we stayed. I would stay here again if in the area. (To make a cell call: Go to the paved road and turn left. Go uphill exactly 0.75 miles, turn right and an immediate left. Go into the yard for empty boat trailers and pull all the way forward. Cell reception there is good.) We camped at Blue Mesa Escape in a Motorhome.

Peregrine Pines FamCamp (Military FamCamp), US Air Force Academy, Colorado

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

This is an Air Force FamCamp, so of course you must have a military ID card to use it. It is very beautiful, full of Ponderosa pines, but still just open enough for DishTV to work. The roads and sites are gravel. The sites are fairly level, with only a little leveling needed. The back-in sites are widely spaced, about 30-50 feet between sites; I didn't inspect the pull-though sites. There is no camp-wide Wi-Fi, but they rent Mi-Fi for $5/day or $25/week, and it provides a very good internet connection which I used to upload hi-resolution photos to Facebook. Didn't try streaming video on it. There are lots of places to walk your dog, but no dog park. If you want to play catch with your dog, you can do what I did, and walk them to the lasertag area. It is secluded and out of the way, but still close to the FamCamp. This is technically against the rules, but the lasertag area is heavily wooded, out of sight, mostly. The laundry is $1.50/load. There was a burn ban while we stayed here, but gas grills were allowed. I would definitely stay here again if in the area. The Academy itself it beautiful, widely spread out with miles of undeveloped forests. We camped at Peregrine Pines FamCamp (Military FamCamp) in a Motorhome.

Devils Tower / Black Hills KOA, Devils Tower, Wyoming

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $63.00
Overall Rating:

I like this campground, in general. Biggest cons are the cost. It is extremely expensive, at 63.00/night with Good Sam discount. There are no fire rings or grills. There are very cheap, table top charcoal grills for $20 here, which is what we bought. We had to put our rear wheels on 6" blocks. The majority of the pull through sites are more level. All roads and sites are gravel. Some of the good points: Location: Except for the National Park Campground in the park, this is the closest RV park. This park is literally just yards outside the entrance to Devils Tower. The customer service is great. My sewer receptacle was too high, about 6". I complained about it, and the next morning, people came with a stack of lumber, and made it work. There are two fairly large souvenir shops here with fast food. Still, if you can find another park at a reasonable rate, it might be worth it. We camped at Devils Tower / Black Hills KOA in a Motorhome.

Badlands / White River KOA, Interior, South Dakota

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $43.00
Overall Rating:

This is the place to stay if visiting the Badlands National Park. This KOA is much better than average. It is very pretty, full of big cottonwood trees. The "cotton" from the trees is so thick, it almost looks like a mild snowstorm most of the time. I think it is pretty, but it may trigger allergies. It is easily the best campground around for 80 miles. All of the lots and roads are gravel, but the sites look very flat. It is rather on the expensive side. The KOA serves breakfast and supper with a very limited menu. (The food is OK, don't expect gourmet quality.) This is good since the nearest town is population 46, with just a combination liquor store-bodega-post office, one bar and one gas station. Stock up your groceries and supplies before you come, because all the towns around are tiny ranching communities with just a small convenience store, if that. There are 14 cable channels. All cell phones are spotty and can drop calls since this is down in a river valley. I was able to make (Sprint cell) calls sitting in one particular spot at the picnic table. The WiFi here is good. It is unlikely dish TV will work here--heavy tree cover. The sites are a little on the short side. Big rigs with a tow will fit, but it will be tight. There is plenty of room for everyone's pullouts. The park is good for walking dogs and they have a fenced area to go off-leash. (A doggie park.) The staff is friendly and helpful. This is definitely out in the boonies; only a few ranchers a day drive by on the highway. I love it. I would come here again if in the area. We camped at Badlands / White River KOA in a Motorhome.

Ellsworth AFB FamCamp (Military FamCamp), Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $23.00
Overall Rating:

This is an Air Force FamCamp, so you must be active duty or retired military. First of all, this is a great location to explore the Black Hills area. Mt. Rushmore is 28 miles away. You could use this as a base to explore the Badlands National Park, 82 miles away, but I would recommend the White River KOA. The scenery in the FamCamp isn't that great, but it's got some trees and grass. It's by a school and housing area. Flat concrete pad for every site. $23.00 FHU. It has a convenient sidewalk to walk dogs. It is inside the base, so security is good. Our dish TV worked fine, our Sprint cell phone worked fine, and the WiFi is decent. Technically, it is against the rules, but if you walk your dog to the area labeled FamCamp Expansion, you can take your dog off-leash and play catch with him. I had to run after my dog when she stopped playing catch and chased 3 mule deer that had jumped the fence. We camped at Ellsworth AFB FamCamp (Military FamCamp) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The Air and Space Museum just outside the gate is worth a visit. Be sure and visit Mt. Rushmore, and Needles Highway. Take Needles in a car or nothing larger than a big SUV. RVs will not fit through the one lane tunnels, but the amazing rock formations are worth the drive. Buffalo and wild burros can be seen in Custer State Park. Stop and ask the ranger station where they are.

I-80 Lakeside Campground (formerly Lakeside Camping), North Platte, Nebraska

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

This is a little closer to the interstate than we like, but we got a pull-thru site on the side of the campground furthest from the interstate, so inside the RV, the noise didn't bother us. It has nice clean showers, just a little aged. There are plenty of sites. We just stayed one night, passing through. Our dish TV worked fine, our Sprint phones worked fine with mobile data. The sites all seemed reasonably level. There is a dog park, and plenty of interior roads to walk your dog. We camped at I-80 Lakeside Campground (formerly Lakeside Camping) in a Motorhome.

Hidden Falls Cabins & RV Park, Nebraska City, Nebraska

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

This is a very new RV park. It looks as though it can't be more than five years old. Every site has a flat concrete pad and gravel space for your tow. All sites are back-in. The on-line reservation system worked fine. There are no trees near the sites, so our DIsh TV worked fine. We have Sprint and our cell phones worked fine with mobile data. No Wifi at the park. Although there are no showers, since our water heater went out, the owners offered to open a cabin for us to shower in. The view on one side of the park is nice trees and well kept lawns, but the other side of the park, the view is heavy equipment parking lots and warehouse style buildings. There is a small 18 inch waterfall that is 100-200 yards from the main loop of the campground. For dog walking, it is a quiet, small campground with a gravel road loop, and a gravel road to the falls. There are some workers living here, but all the sites are well kept and tidy, nothing old or cluttered. They have the type of firepits that people buy for their backyards. This is a plus, since you can locate your fire wherever you wish. It is great for a night or two passing through, but not a destination vacation. We camped at Hidden Falls Cabins & RV Park in a Motorhome.

Horseshoe Bend RV Campground and Boat Ramp, Leavenworth, Indiana

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

If you can get a riverside site, these are absolutely gorgeous and lovely, with large shade trees leaning over the riverbank. We stayed away from the riverbank because of availability. There were no trees away from the riverbank, and our Dish TV worked fine. The riverside sites might not be good for satellite TV. The website said not to rely on GPS, but our Google maps on smartphone took us right to the park. There is good signage guiding one to the park. The biggest drawback is that there is no mobile network whatsoever. We have Sprint with unlimited free roaming on any available network nationwide, and our cellphones said no mobile network available. There is no Wifi at the park. For this reason, I recommend downloading the offline map of this area for Google maps if you use it. Because of the beauty of the riverside sites, I would stay here again if I could get a riverside site. We camped at Horseshoe Bend RV Campground and Boat Ramp in a Motorhome.

Rifrafters Campground, Fayetteville, West Virginia

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

I like this park. It has a lot of trees, and it has more of a feel of nature than other parks. The map of the campground is very poor and hand-drawn, not a good representation what is actually on the ground. The roads and turns were plenty wide enough for our 24' and toad. Arrive at a decent hour, and they will guide you to your site. They say they have cable TV, but ours didn't work. Our site was fairly level and large enough to leave my tow connected. I would stay here again. We camped at Rifrafters Campground in a Motorhome.
