Palo Duro Canyon State Park, Canyon, Texas

Date of Stay: November, 2017 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

We spent a week at Palo Duro Canyon. This was actually our second time here. The 1st was 15 years ago before our children were born. Last time we tent camped and actually were chased away by the cold weather. This time were came armed with a winterized RV and conquered the cold weather which again tried to chase us off. The kids, dogs and adults had a great time. We did the Lighthouse hike including the scramble to the very top. I don't recommend the scramble with two dogs. Ours kept trying to lie down a take naps while people piled up behind us. The cap site was nice and clean. The covered patio was great and its four huge posts were perfect for hanging our hammocks. Another nice thing was the huge hill near the campground that the kids had a great time climbing around on. It is rather steep so parents should check it out 1st before deciding if they are OK with their kids playing on it. Our only complaints were: 1. It took about 1/2 an hour to check into due to the number of people entering the park at 4-5pm. I strongly suggest arriving early as those who do seem to get to pick their sites while late arrivals like us were just assigned a sight. 2. Out camp site faced into another site instead of into the back of the next RV which is the norm. This was a minor issue as we had great neighbors. Over all we had a awesome time. Next year the plan is to hit Cap Rock Canyon. We camped at Palo Duro Canyon State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Hickory Creek COE, Lewisville, Texas

Date of Stay: November, 2017 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed here over Thanksgiving after spending a week at Palo Duro Canyon State Park. While it might lack the grand views Hickory Creek was a pleasure to stay at. Our site looked out on the lake which was only 100' from the front door of our RV. What was also nice was the cluster of trees 20' from the camper which allowed us to string up our hammocks. We tried our hand at fishing but had no luck (likely a user error rather than a lack of fish). There were a few boats on the water but nothing that detracted from our stay. The only complaint (and its a very minor one) is how close the campground is from the DFW airport. If a silent sky is mandatory, this might not be the campground for you. After 20 years living in Houston, TX my family and I hardly even noticed the planes that passed over head every 10 - 15 minutes. Hickory Creek was great and has been put on our "to-do again" list. We camped at Hickory Creek COE in a Travel Trailer.

Splashway Water Park and RV, Sheridan, Texas

Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $75.00
Overall Rating:

We went to Splashway so that the kids could have one more outing before school started up again. This spot was easy to pull into and actually roomier than some of the other ones in the park. What was also nice was that we were only 60 yards from the entrance to the water park. (NOTE: Entrance to the water park was not included with the RV Camp Site) The kids had a blast. They were there from 10am to 6pm only coming out for lunch. Our only complaint was that the mosquitos were crazy around the dog park! Be sure to spray on some DEET before heading over there during the morning or evening. In closing, This is not my sort of RV site. I like them heavily wooded and ideally completely unable to see any neighbors. But, for some place a take a young family in the middle of a Texas summer... This place is hard to beat. We camped at Splashway Water Park and RV in a Travel Trailer.

Double Lake Recreation Area, Coldspring, Texas

Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

We had a great time... for August camping in Texas. We almost had the entire place to ourselves. Only 3 other sites were occupied. On RV door side (passenger) the next spot was 50 yards away through thick brush. On the other side (driver) the next spot was only 15 yards away and clearly visible should you look back there (we did not). From the camper's bumper, the lake was just 20 yards away. A great spot that we will try to get again next time. The kids enjoyed the swimming area which was clean and well maintained. We camped at Double Lake Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.
