Jack's Pond Park, Chance Cove, Newfoundland

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

We're from the States and have been traveling in Newfoundland for 2 months with another month here. We have never encountered such poor service here or in the States. First, this campground is in Arnold's Cove, not Chance Cove. The ONLY way to stay is to go on-line and make a reservation which I did. The interior roads are terrible! They are NOT big rig friendly (and ours is only a 35 ft. 5th wheel). The trees overhung too much and there is a bridge that would not hold our weight (over 24,000 pounds) and yet we were told to go that route by the person at the desk. Good thing we didn't!! (We drove it later with the truck only.) The original site she directed us to was too narrow and the road was too narrow to back it in without going over the cliff! We were finally given a spot that fit and we told her right then that we wanted to alter our reservation and leave early. She said we MUST go on line to cancel our dates and the 72 hour notice was from the date of departure. We did as we were directed but it was not cancelled. When we asked about it, she told us the owner said it is 72 hours from the date you want to leave. He offered us 2 free nights if we come back next year! They already have our money so I guess they are happy. In addition, there is ONLY 20 amp service, not even 30 amp!!! This campground is almost ALL seasonal campers and it's not well maintained (trash and junk). There are no turnarounds and it's impossible to get to the dump station due to the trees, bridge and sharp turns required. We will never return. We camped at Jack's Pond Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Viking RV Park, Quirpon, Newfoundland

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $23.00
Overall Rating:

This is a great place to park your camper/RV! It's a perfect location but, more than that, it's a very clean campground with such friendly owners. Unlike previous reviews, we did not have any issues with power. We usually run 50 amp but they only have 30 and it was fine. I asked the owner and she said that the older area has some power issues sometimes. The dump station was easy in and out in our 35 foot 5th wheel. We did not have any problems maneuvering to get to it. Because we were there for several days, we tried to conserve our water use. We did use the washrooms and they are so clean and decorated nicely! The laundry and washrooms are new. The owner makes pies, bread, cinnamon rolls, etc. Yummy! The owner's brother took us out on his boat to see icebergs! What a treat to have a local person educate us about ice bergs! We camped at Viking RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Close to so much! This is a beautiful area! The Sea Ice and Ice Bergs were amazing! The best view is from Sail Cove, Whale Point. Go to the end of the road and walk up past the cemetery and you can see forever! You can see Labrador and Quirpon Island and whales. It really is beautiful! There are lots of moose and caribou around so be very careful driving.

Rest N' Nest Campground, East Thetford, Vermont

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $41.00
Overall Rating:

Vermont is beautiful and this campground setting is beautiful also. It's an old campground and seems rundown. The swimming lake/pond is really bad... dirty and really sharp rocks. Not sure how kids could possibly go down a slide and land safely. We were there when the swimming pond was not open yet. They also have an above ground pool (also not open yet). We tried to do laundry but the washing machines were filthy so we took our laundry into a nearby town. The couple who own/run the campground were friendly. The roads were easy to navigate. There is some road noise but not bad at all. We camped at Rest N' Nest Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Cooperstown KOA, Richfield Springs, New York

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $55.00
Overall Rating:

This seemed very expensive for what we got. The sites are rather close and the campground is older. However, the owners are working very hard to make upgrades. The owners are very friendly and helpful. The interior roads were easy to navigate. We barely fit in our site but it was okay. There were storms going through (extremely high winds) and the owners told us where to go in case of a tornado. We only stayed one night and it was fine. We camped at Cooperstown KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

Ives Run COE, Tioga, Pennsylvania

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

Great COE! Lots of trees. Very clean and well maintained. Sites are VERY spacious. The road is narrow around the loop and is only a problem when we were backing into our site. We ended up in the grass a little bit. People working and volunteering there are so friendly and welcoming! We enjoyed every minute. Peaceful and relaxing. There is a very little amount of road noise but not much. We were right on the lake. We fished and rode our bikes and relaxed. The sites on the lake do not have sewer hookups. The dump on the way out is easy to maneuver. Other sites have full hookups. This is our kind of camping. We camped at Ives Run COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Candy Hill Campground, Winchester, Virginia

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $41.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed here to be near our daughter in DC for a week. The person in the office looked up as I entered but did not greet me and looked back down. I cheerfully said hello and got a snort. We arrived on a rainy day so we would expect a little mud. However, they directed us to a site that we had to back over "grass/mud" for well over 80 feet, and up a slight incline, onto the cement pad. Even with our brand new Ford 350, we struggled to do this. Our rig is very heavy at over 16,000 pounds. The tires spun and dug huge tracks in the mud. The guy directing us did not seem to care that we were tearing up their grass. In 4-wheel drive we made it but what a mess! Our truck and 5th wheel were muddy. Why isn't there gravel? Why not direct us to an open site that was paved (there were plenty)? So, we spent a week walking carefully around mud. Yuck. It was not a pleasant stay. We did laundry but found an odor in the laundry area... musty moldy smell? The machines were clean. We were in an area where the sites are very close together. The picnic table was exceptionally small... maybe only 45 inches long. The bright spot was that they did have an old refurbished trolley that we took into town for the Apple Blossom Festival. The guy driving was fun and we really had a great day. However, we won't return. We camped at Candy Hill Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Shawnee State Park, Schellsburg, Pennsylvania

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $44.00
Overall Rating:

Kind of expensive but it's a State Park which we love! And the best part is that it has full hookups! This is another beautiful State Park with lots of trees and lots of space between sites...and full hookups! We loved this park. It's very large with lakes for fishing and trails for walking. There are lots of trees but nothing that interferes with RV's. They have planted a lot of new trees too. The roads in the campground are great and easy to maneuver around. This is our kind of camping!! We camped at Shawnee State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Shipshewana Trading Place RV Park, Shipshewana, Indiana

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $39.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed here while our 5th wheel had some work completed. We ended up staying here a few days longer due to snow in April. This is a nice campground with no amenities. We had full hookups but nothing else. The campground was developed to accommodate those getting their rigs worked on and for the large events at the across the street. For example, while we were there, they had barrel racing competitions going on and the campground filled up with horse trailer/campers. We camped at Shipshewana Trading Place RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Lots to do in Shipshewana. Lots of shopping/tourist stuff to do. If you want to see the real people of Shipshewana, drive out into the country and observe the beautiful clean farms of the Amish and Mennonites in the area. There are lots of buggies everywhere so watch out for them. We loved Yoder Meat and Cheese the best. The most tender and flavorful meats (jerky, hamburger, Summer Sausage, pepperoni etc.) and the cheeses were wonderful.

Elkhart Campground, Elkhart, Indiana

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

Too expensive for the amenities that were available. We stayed in early April and they did not have water turned on. They said we could fill up our water tank but nothing at the site. The site was muddy since it had been raining. The laundry was not available either. It was an okay place to stay but not very accommodating or helpful. When they did turn the water on, they didn't bother to tell us. I think we found out a day or two later. We camped at Elkhart Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Elkhart County Fairgrounds, Goshen, Indiana

Date of Stay: March, 2018 - $33.00
Overall Rating:

This is a county 4-H that is huge and has a lot of camping sites. There are strict rules about no hay bales or other items around the outside of rigs. The rules emphasize that it is a short term stay campground only. However, nothing is enforced. There were a few trashy trailers with hay bales and junk and looked as though they were "living" there. However, most of the sites were fine. There are no amenities except the full hook ups which were great. We were in the area for warranty work on our 5th wheel so it worked out great! We checked in and paid and then were told to pick any spot we wanted. We camped at Elkhart County Fairgrounds in a Fifth Wheel.

Prophetstown State Park, West Lafayette, Indiana

Date of Stay: March, 2018 - $37.00
Overall Rating:

We have been traveling full time for 7 months and this is definitely one of our favorite spots. We only stayed two nights but wish we could have stayed longer. It is a beautiful state park that is clean and peaceful. there are lots of trees and enough trees and bushes between sites that it feels very private. We were in a pull through that was over 80 feet long and level. Our site had full hookups with 50 amp. There is a large cement patio and a picnic table. There is another area that is 30 amp. This is a large park and from talking to others, it's very full in the summer months when the water park is open. The whole park is well maintained and clean. There are basketball areas, picnic area, an old time farmstead, bike paths and hiking paths. The park is right outside Lafayette/West Lafayette. The only downside is that you have reserve your site through Reserve America and they charge an additional $5.00. I hate using them but there is no other way to reserve a site. We camped at Prophetstown State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Double J Campground and RV Park, Chatham, Illinois

Date of Stay: March, 2018 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed here only one night. It is overpriced in my opinion, especially since it is off season, cold and raining. It had been raining for days and some sites were flooded since the park is on very flat ground. It is a clean park and all hookups worked well. The roads are easy to navigate and big rig friendly. It's best to go off the directions given on their website. If you plug the address into your GPS, you may have trouble getting there. It can be a bit confusing. Staff were very friendly and welcoming. We camped at Double J Campground and RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Perry Lake Campground, Perry, Oklahoma

Date of Stay: March, 2018 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

This was a great place for one night! It's a peaceful setting overlooking Perry Lake. Only one other rig pulled in for the night we were there. There are full hookups. The water hookup is about a foot under ground with a cover on it. In the morning, we were unhooking and the entire hole was full of water! It had a leak somewhere and we didn't know it. I had to reach my arm into the water to unhook. Other than that.... it was a great one night stay. We camped at Perry Lake Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Date of Stay: March, 2018 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

We had to get our rig aligned at Cowser Tire and Service on a Monday so we stayed at this nearby park over the weekend. They were completely full due to an event at the racetrack but due to a cancellation, they were able to get us in. We had site 204 which was spacious. Some other sites were pretty close together. The staff here are some of the friendliest we have met! It's clean and well maintained. We had a concrete patio pad. The skeet shooting is nearby but it wasn't bad. We camped at Northlake Village RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

North Texas Jellystone (formerly Rustic Creek Ranch), Burleson, Texas

Date of Stay: March, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

First off, our kids are grown and we only stayed here because it was close to a service center for our RV. It was mid week so there were very few people which was good. We checked in but no one offered to show us to our site. She only shoved a map at us and told us the number. This is a very large park. But we found our spot. It barely fit our 35 ft. 5th wheel and there was very little room for our truck. Once out of the truck, we noticed an odor. It was coming from the sewer because the cap was not on it. The person before us must have left the sewer sleeve in and the cap would not fit on it. We finally got it off and closed up. Then we noticed all the trash around. Plastic bottles smashed from running over them, bottle tops, little things but a lot of it. I am wondering why no one goes around and checks each campsite when someone leaves. It should be clean when the next person arrives. Also want to mention there is a lot of highway noise. We were in site 24 right next to all the seasonal folks. In this area, there is junk and tubs and misc stuff under and around all the trailers. The fire pits had trash in them too. I was disappointed. I really thought it would be clean and well maintained. But, it was okay for an overnight. We won't stay again. We camped at North Texas Jellystone (formerly Rustic Creek Ranch) in a Fifth Wheel.
