Outlanders River Camp, Luray, Virginia

Date of Stay: November, 2017 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

A little pricey but a great campground. Since we like low key and a little rustic/rural, this was a fantastic place to be. We were here for 5 weeks in order to stay close to Washington DC to visit our daughter a lot. There are over 100 acres to explore and the Shenandoah River borders two sides of the property. Great for fly fishing. The highway is near but we never heard any road noise. Since we were here in late fall, we were thrilled to see beautiful trees changing colors. The owner and people who work here are so very friendly and accommodating. The campground is clean and the sites are far enough apart that there is plenty of room to be outside around the fire. The roads are well maintained and easily accommodate all RV's. There is a lot of tent camping down by the river. The sunrises and sunsets with the mountains as backdrops, are beautiful. There are no pools and only a small playground... but that is great because it's a great place for kids to be outside exploring! They have two shelters for gatherings and they are building two beautiful cabins to rent out beginning in spring of 2018. During November, the campground cleared out during the week and we were the only campers. But the campground became about 1/3 full on weekends even in very cold weather. Peaceful and relaxing!! I wish more campgrounds were like this one! We camped at Outlanders River Camp in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

So close to the beautiful Shenandoah National Park! Lots of little towns to explore nearby...north and south of Luray. The Virginia Civil War Museum in New Market is excellent and a must-see. Murray's Fly Fishing shop in Edinburg is a must for fly fishers. A wonderful place for lunch in Woodstock is the Garden Cafe.

Canaan Valley Resort State Park, Davis, West Virginia

Date of Stay: October, 2017 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed here for two weeks and it's been the best two weeks in a long time! All of the sites are spacious and afford lots of privacy. They are all pull through but are arranged off the circular interior roads. When exiting our rig, we could only see the forest, woods, trees and deer. We put up a hammock in the trees. Deer came by at dusk every day. It was the most peaceful two weeks ever! And the best part... full hookups! Even when the campground was full (which was only on weekends) it still feels like you are alone. We had a great fire pit and picnic table. We did use the laundry which was clean and functioned well. The park rangers were always nearby and kept things clean and well maintained. The huge downside is that there is no internet. We had to go to the resort lodge to access internet. The roads in and out of the park were paved and more than adequate. Highly recommend this peaceful setting! We camped at Canaan Valley Resort State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

The towns of Davis and Thomas both have nice coffee shops. Thomas has a great place to eat and listen to folk music; called the Purple Fiddle. The chair lift in Canaan Valley has a great view at the top or hike further to Bald Knob; beautiful view of the valley. There are a lot of bike trails with a bike shop in Davis to rent a bike. Canaan Valley State Park resort has an indoor and outdoor pool and exercise room that campers can access for a fee.

Shenandoah Valley Campground, Verona, Virginia

Date of Stay: October, 2017 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

There are a couple campgrounds named Shenandoah Valley Campground. This is the one in Verona Virginia. It is very large. We have a smaller 5th wheel at just 35ft and we had difficulty navigating the roads inside the campground. The top of our 5th wheel hit several branches hanging low. The sites are close together and there is very little space to sit and enjoy the outdoors. We had a pull through site and had major difficulty getting out of it. The turn we had to make was too sharp and we had to move some trash cans to get out. We were there in October and there were lots of families with lots of little kids running and screaming. There are also lots of golf carts zooming around everywhere. Luckily we only stayed one night. We will never go back! We camped at Shenandoah Valley Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Baileyton RV Park, Greeneville, Tennessee

Date of Stay: October, 2017 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

We stopped here just overnight. The pool is saltwater but we didn't get a chance to use it. The sites are close together but we were only there overnight so it was okay. The owners were very nice and helpful. The park appeared clean and well maintained. It was a bit tight getting in and out but not terrible. We camped at Baileyton RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

River Plantation RV Park, Sevierville, Tennessee

Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $48.00
Overall Rating:

We were initially there to attend an RV Rally and then stayed another week after that. The park is clean and well maintained. The entrance sign is difficult to see.... pretty low to the ground and easy to miss. We drove over the day before to make sure we knew where to turn. The traffic can be pretty heavy!! Once in the park, it's wonderful. We did not use the pools or hot tub but it all appeared clean and others were enjoying it. We enjoyed being in a site right on the river as those seemed to have more space between them. The spaces between sites in the middle areas were average. We prefer areas that are less congested and with less tourists but that isn't the fault of the RV park. We camped at River Plantation RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

The Great Smoky Mountains are beautiful and worth spending a lot of time there. In addition, there are several shows to go to and a huge plethora of places to eat southern foods (fried everything!). Sevierville and Pigeon Forge all run together and it's a busy, congested area... full of tourists at all times of the year.

Raccoon Mountain RV Park & Campground, Chattanooga, Tennessee

Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

Only $17.50 with Escapee Discount so I hate to complain. This is an old campground and the sites are very very close together with really no space to sit outside and enjoy it. I was hoping for more from an Escapee RV park. We stayed only 3 nights to enjoy attractions around the area. We prefer RV parks that offer more of an outdoor living area and a little bit of privacy. The laundry was clean. The greeters were very friendly, helpful and welcoming. The activities we saw were geared more toward folks who are much older than us and who live here full time. They seemed to be enjoying the events. We camped at Raccoon Mountain RV Park & Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Knoxville is very nearby. Great Museum in Clinton TN called The Green McAdoo Cultural Center and Museum. It tells the compelling story of twelve high school students, who in 1956, braved threats of violence to attend Clinton High School, making it the first desegregated public high school in the South.

Laurel Lake Camping Resort, Corbin, Kentucky

Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed here for two nights. Winding narrow road for several miles coming into park. No shoulder on the road so drive carefully. This is a gated campground which was nice. They give you a code to get in and out after 5:00pm. The owners are in the process of enlarging the campground and are adding another lake and up to 100 new camping sites with utilities. They own many more treed acres to the east. Very nice people with a great vision for their expansion. We stayed in a pull through site which had a little grass between the sites, along with picnic table and fire pit. There are two playground areas which looked fairly new. Beautiful treed area with small lake. My husband was able to practice his fly fishing. We would stay here again when in the area. We camped at Laurel Lake Camping Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Cumberland Falls is a short drive away and worth the trip. It's much larger and more powerful than we had thought it would be. We highly recommend The Wrigley Taproom and Brewery in downtown Corbin. It's a funky place with a great selection of beers and locally sourced food items. Really tasty!

Cave Country RV Campground, Cave City, Kentucky

Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

This RV campground is super clean and well maintained. There are flowers and a fountain and grass between each site. Some trees between sites. We usually don't use the laundry at campgrounds but we decided to go ahead. They were immaculate! I peeked into the restroom/shower area and again, spotless clean and well maintained. It's an easy in and out. It's located near other businesses but I didn't notice any additional noise. The young man that was always around when we had a question was very polite and friendly. Would definitely stay here again when in the area. All sites are pull through. We camped at Cave Country RV Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Although Mammoth Cave is the big attraction in Cave City, Bowling Green is where we spent our time. The National Corvette Museum is a must see!

Westgate RV Campground, London, Kentucky

Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $34.00
Overall Rating:

This is a very basic place to stay overnight, right in the middle of a commercial area. It's located near Cracker Barrel and in back of another restaurant and behind the motel. The signage is poor and it's very hard to know where to turn. I called and asked where to go since it certainly didn't look like there was room to pull into the motel area. But, she said to pull in and park there anyway. Really small area. Once inside the motel lobby, the girl working seemed annoyed with my questions. The map of the campground she gave us was also confusing because she was telling us to drive over what looks like a grassy area and not a road. The road noise and the all night lights are certainly things to consider. It's a good place to stay overnight though. I reserved this stay on-line, on their website which added a $10.00 charge that I was not aware of until the reservation was complete. I was notified that the motel still had to approve the reservation. The next day, I called the motel to see if they had approved my reservation and the girl said they aren't notified when someone makes an on-line reservation. Busy weekend in this area (homecoming, festivals etc.) so things were booked up pretty tight. We camped at Westgate RV Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Ozarks Mountain Springs RV Park, Mountain View, Missouri

Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Great place to camp! The staff were all very friendly and welcoming. They came by a couple times when we were outside and asked if we were doing okay or needed anything. It is near several grist mills and lakes. There weren't many people here but if all the campsites were filled, I can see that the sites are very close together. There are several trees and it was quiet and peaceful even though it is near the highway. There is a walking trail through the wooded area nearby. If you are there on the weekend, they have music and karaoke. We camped at Ozarks Mountain Springs RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed just overnight to visit a friend. It is a well kept small park area. There are water and electric hook ups only. There is a dump station on site. The city does a good job of keeping it clean and mowed. We camped at City of Pittsburg RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

USI RV Park, Wichita, Kansas

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $37.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed here for a couple months prior to retiring and traveling full time. The campground is clean and satisfactory for overnight stays. It is very convenient to local activities. The sites are gravel and very close together. If you have a picnic table, you will be looking at your neighbors sewer while you eat. Since we are new to RVing and campgrounds, we tried to abide by all the rules. We are rule followers. However, we were constantly harassed by the staff, especially one, who always found something we or our guests were doing wrong. Our guest went 7 miles an hour instead of 5. Our guest parked in the wrong place. He repeatedly followed me and yelled at me. If you stay here, keep your head down and follow the rules! We camped at USI RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.
